It affects weight and durability. 3 layer with no mesh liner is the most durable, vs with the mesh liner. Reason is that the mesh causes friction against the waterproof membrane. The mesh is supposed to be a cheaper way to aid in breathability of a jacket. 2 layer jackets are normally sub $300. 3 Layer constrction consists of a backing material such as Tricot (pronounced Tree-Ko) lining thats laminated or glued to gore-tex membrane, and covered by a durable Face fabric such as a high denier Nylon. 3 layer jackets are around $400 and up. I worked in outdoor retail for 18 years. Sold many brands such as North Face and Arc'teryx. Mountain Hardware/Columbia also makes good quality outerwear without the Gore-Tex branded membrane. There are lower priced waterproof pieces made with other company's technology. For example Omni-Tech by Columbia. Gore charges a lot for licensing and testing so many brands opt out of using it for their own membranes. Even North Face makes their own line of waterproof technology.
I was hoping you would say something about how to check the fabric. I have a really good fake, but I dont know how to check if its goretex or not. How can you see that?
