You put something in your online shopping cart, you checkout, and you receive it in the mail several days later. That’s how online shopping usually works. But what’s happening behind the scenes?
Online shopping scams are rampant, especially in a time where we are all staying home as much as possible. It’s important to know the red flags to look for before entering your personal information and making a purchase. Let’s see what updates Dani has for us on online shopping scams this December!

It's like a litmus test to turn away people who are savvy enough to sniff out the scam, but let in the people who are gullible enough or unfamiliar enough with the internet to fall for the bad spelling, obvious website mistakes, etc. It works in their favor oddly enough, because people who wouldnt fall for the scam are just a waste of time to the scammer(s) anyway

Also usually you will recognize fake stores by the feedback the users leave, it's usually too generic. And sometimes they don't offer any shipping option to be calculated, so that's a red flag. And after purchase you won't get any emails from the store or the seller, ever.

I noticed some generic feedback with some rotten tomatoes reviews for movies; positive reviews of movies with sentences like “good movie, loved it” or “fun and entertaining” which definitely seems robotic and fake XD

@@bearbbb12 Oh yes, also IMDB is full of fake ratings. But this fake feedback thing is very popular... is very much present on scam products, or maybe the products are real but the comments are totally fake, suspicious, and not recommended to buy anything from such sites. Usually these comments all written in one same day, by seemingly different users of facebook, which you can't ever click on to check, sometiems it's just an image as well. And I've seen at times they even add a negative comment among them to ramp up the realism.

I was about to go to a site to enroll in opt out prescreening services and I used the whois website and bbb and saved myself a headache from possible identity fraud. My sister bought a costume for 50 dollars when we waited 2 weeks and no package. We emailed the person and they never responded. My sister saw red flags on the website but we didn’t think anything of it. Shortly after we found the website again. It was taken off, the website was gone. We quickly knew it was a scam. Thankfully my sister used PayPal and we got our money back :) PayPal the way to go!

Very informative! I almost got scammed by a company that answers me in text messages. Everytime they send me a text, my phone gives me a warning about extra fees for the text. #suspicious

Thank you for your efforts. Price was one third less, so reasonable. Item cost was small. It was found through Google shopping. Item was an obscure closeout but one I was looking for specifically, so I did not expect a scam, until it had a weird payment system and that led me here. The contact address upon searching was for an arena on the East Coast-obvious fake! I was expecting maybe a bland warehouse, that I would then check for a tenant list.

Great vid. However I wonder if the anonymity is so crazy people won't call and bother employees. I have managed big customer service organizations, and every so often a lunatic would pop up who would call anyone they could locate in any directory to scream and yell about politics, how they hate the ceo, or some other conspiracy theory.

Thank you so much for this! I have recently ordered some shoes from a suspicious website, I saw the red flags but I ignored them. I could have payed with PayPal but I didn’t have it at that time so I used my credit card. It delivered to another state. I emailed them and guess what happened “email not found”. Then I found you and thank you so much for the info. I do have a question though, so I’ve obviously been scammed but it has https it has the “S” in it. So does it mean my info is safe.?

Hi Julie! Short answer: "It's complicated." Long answer: A website with an SSL certificate (denoted with a URL of "https" vs. "http") secures the traffic between two parties, in this case you and the suspicious website. That means that a third-party would have a significantly more difficult time intercepting that traffic and stealing your credit card information. Now, if the recipient (the suspicious website) of the secure traffic (your credit card information) is fraudulent, they would still have your credit card information. I highly recommend the following: 1) Dispute the transaction with your credit card company. Gather screenshots of all communications during the purchasing process (order received, shipping notification, tracking information, etc.), and gather screenshots of your attempt to reach out and finding "email not found." This will build a strong case against the transaction and potentially get your money back. 2) Close your credit card and have the company issue you a new one (new credit card number, etc.). This ensures that if the suspicious website sells your credit card information and/or tries to charge anything to it, it will be declined and nothing would adversely affect your financial situation. 3) Keep a close eye on your credit report and credit card statements. There is a possibility that your information could be used to conduct further fraud and identity theft. If you can catch something fishy quickly and report it, you'll be in a much better position. Please keep in mind that it's hard to answer questions like, "Is website a scam?" because (as the video states) it's complicated. Sometimes there's no way of knowing 100% until you've been scammed-- and obviously you don't want to get to that point. Use all of the advice discussed in the video and then make an educated guess from there. I personally lean on the side of overly cautious; I'd rather miss out on something than have my personal information stolen. Good luck, and always be skeptical! -Dani

I signed for a membership for Worth-point, and paid my money via credit card. I then could not use the service when I went to use it. I then contacted them via email and they stated they had no record of my email or information. They suggested I cancel the credit card payment and then to contact them direct for membership. I cancelled the payment but now they have reversed it and an extra $100 has been taken out of my account. What do I do? HELP!!! I am from Australia.

I just watch a video of Pokemon go on how to get free poke coins and i follow all the steps but suddenly the video disappear from my history and the video disappeared from RU-vid after i had follow all the steps should i be scare or was the channel erase? I witness a too-good-to-be-true price on a item suspicion, so I tried to call them direct, no answer, or the phone out of service. I e-mailed them in regards to information on the item listed, still no response so that's a red flag... right?. Actually I saw two items two different websites with extremely competitive low prices... . (for a new item) that's what led me to this video. Because I almost jumped on it just by sight alone.

This company that is out in California they claim the name is FILPE and it was a recliner chair leather for $29 and free shipping I was not thinking clearly last week and I went to pay for it with a debit card and they actually took my money I believe it's a scam I got thinking free shipping all the way from California when I go to tracking they do not give me tracking and they had my wrong address is there something that I can do like call my bank or call Better Business Bureau to get this thing taken care of I don't want anyone online to steal my money I believe that's what they've done I should have realized it was a cheap price too good to be true thank you for your advice

Hi Julie! If I'm understanding correctly, you're looking for more 1-on-1 advice on a fraud situation? The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has some great resources at IdentityTheft.gov. You can also give them a call for assistance as well (phone number on website). I also recommend giving your financial institution a call and speaking with a fraud specialist. They should be able to give you more specific advice and next steps as well. I hope this helps! -Dani

Hi Jonathan! I'm sorry for the delayed response. Your next steps depend on the payment method used on the website. If you used a debit or credit card, contact your financial institution and ask to get a replacement card with a new number to avoid any future fraud attempts. If you used a third party like PayPal, contact them to see what their procedure and next steps would be (and change your password for good measure). -Dani

That's a hard question. Websites like Facebook and Google have ad review processes prior to ad placement- some better than others. Given the issues I've had on the backend of Facebook (and the whole Cambridge Analytica thing), my trust in them is lacking. I would exercise the same amount of caution on an ad as any other website just to be safe. -Dani

I just bought an item from a site i now realise is fake and thay use pictures from other sites and put lowlow prices to get you to buy from them. I used paypal. But am still paranoid that thay can get into my credit card or bank account. I changed paypal passwords and took my card details link down from paypal. Still feel worried tho.

Unfortunately, there's not always a clear answer as to whether a website is fraudulent until after you've been scammed. Hi Natalie! Was this a website you purchased a product from? If yes, do you remember the payment method you used? You'll want to get a replacement credit/debit card with a new card number if you typed the card number directly onto the website. This will prevent any future fraud attempts with that payment method. If you used a third party like PayPal, you'll want to start a dispute on their website and change your password for good measure. -Dani

if i purchased from a scam website using my paypal, are my information still safe? :(( the website looked so legit i made a purchase without doing a quick review for any scams...

You should be okay. PayPal acts as an intermediary between the seller and your credit card information- so the seller never has access to that raw information. My advice would be to dispute the transaction within PayPal.
