This was an amazingly helpful video. It helped me immensely to decide what to send off to get certified after humming and hawing for months after two small town jewelers said couldn't possibly be natural sapphires after simply taking a quick peak with a loop. Though I had to unmount them from the rings, it was well worth it. Thank you so very much!!! I look forward to digging into all the rest of your videos.

Fake indicators: 1.adhesive; 2.curved zoning, homogenized color; 3.curved zoning with bubbles. Is that all?

Straight and angular zoning(up to hexagonal) is an indicator for natural specimens. Curved zoning, homogenic colors, adhesive and bubbles are often indicators for synthetic Materials or Simulants.

Thank you for your answer. Would liquid coconut oil at 1.43-1.46 RI be okay for rubies and sapphires? I think they are fake but look quite beautiful and were inexpensive from Etsy in India.They claimed to sell only natural stones and even gave a card from a gemologist that states that they are sapphires and rubies, but there are no inclusions. I wonder what the material could be. Glass, leaded glass, crystal,rhinestones? I have no idea. Does anybody have experience with this? Cheers Brigitte

Yet another very intressting and informative Video,, it is shocking the lengths unscrupulous dealers go to to con people, I have learnt so much from your videos Micha, thank you!!! Do fake and simulated corundom floreces under uv light?
@GermanGemcutter
@GermanGemcutter 2 года назад
As far as I know, the synthetic corundum is UV active, I'm not sure if every color of it is UV active🤔 Synthetic spinel is also UV active. Many years ago a guy told me that some natural blue Sapphires can also be UV active. I later talked to an old Goldsmith about it, he had a lot of natural Sapphires collected from old gold jewelry and he tested it with me and yes, he had a few natural specimens that were UV active. So always be careful with just one test, several tests are usually required to determine if a Gem is natural or synthetic. It is always better to do different tests. With the test in oil, a lot can be identified or excluded, but almost 100% security is only possible in one of the large laboratories. They have the equipment to examine all possible properties. Nevertheless, the test with oil or with UV is always a very helpful, easy and cheap way of making a selection in advance. Testing a Gemstone with UV light is also very interesting ... Thank you very much for your kind words👍

Does a diamond pen tester work if its 9 on the mohs scale?
@GermanGemcutter
@GermanGemcutter 2 года назад
It depends on the tester itself, some electronic testers have a fine enough scale, but in general i wouldn't suggest using a diamond tester for colored gemstones. As i shown in the Video such doublets or assembled stones have only a thin layer of the Material on top, that they try to imitate.

I talked to one of the dealers and he said he had boughten a stone from another dealer there and it turned out to not be what he said it was and ohh was there some bad blood- they are in litigation now- so don’t think for one minute that it can’t happen to you. Pretty sure there's a video online where the guy shows how synthetic Ruby will dissolve in nail polish remover. Dissolves completely in acetone. Probably the simplest way to see if you have a real Ruby or not.

Can i try this method to check an amethyst ?
@GermanGemcutter
@GermanGemcutter 2 года назад
Yeah you can also test Quartz with this method. Try to lay the focus on the typical Inclusions like fingerprints or tiny mineral Inclusions(needles, crystals) look for color zoning, often you can find some straight and/or angular growth patterns in natural Quartz. Another helpful Test, if you have enough experience, is to check the Stone in good light. Often purple CZ looks like Amethyst. CZ has a much higher Dispersion(0.065) than a natural Amethyst(0.013) so if you see a lot of Fire(many small points of light in the colors of a rainbow) it is a CZ.

Thanks for watching. I used Camelia Oil but only because I had it in the house at the time. You can carry out the test with almost any oil. It is important that it is clear and colorless. Please note that some oils have a strong smell, which can make working with them a bit unpleasant.

how can you test with raw sapphire
@GermanGemcutter
@GermanGemcutter Год назад
Same Method(use a clear and colorless oil) and you will get a much better view inside the stone. Especially with some raw stones it is difficult to recognize something, then it only helps to cut or polish one or better two surfaces (opposite). Of course, this is not always possible. In general good lighting helps a lot. A flashlight with small selective lighting can also be very helpful for this test, to spot inclusions in gems and raw stones.

It is unfortunate that the sapphire I want to test is set in a ring. Will not be able to view stone from side view. Will only be able to see top & bottom 😢
@GermanGemcutter
@GermanGemcutter Год назад
Unfortunately, depending on the setting, it can be difficult or impossible to take a closer look at the Gemstone. Well I hope you can find indicators of natural or synthetic with top and bottom view. Good Luck with your Sapphire.

In this Video i used Camelia Oil. But you can use every clear and colorless oil for this Test e.g. Foodoils. Remember, some oils smells strong, which makes it a little uncomfortable to work with.

In this case i used Camelia Oil just because i have had it available in my household but you can use every clear and colorless oil for this test. Don´t forgett some oils smells strong which makes the work with it a little uncomfortable. The best results you´ll get with oils which RI is as close as possible to the Materials RI you plan to test. Refractive Index for Oils and Gemstones can be found online. Thanks for watching

What kind of oil?
@GermanGemcutter
@GermanGemcutter 2 года назад
Thanks for watching, it is Camellia Oil, but in theorie you can use any Oil, colorless and clear is best. The closer the RI of the Oil to the Material you wanna examine, you become a better view inside the Stone. With this Method whitout a Microscope, you can also use for example a simple Foodoil. Dont forgett some Oils can smell strong, which makes it a little uncomfortable.

@@tonylohi3685 Hello, I apologize for jumping in. I had the same question but I remember someone saying 'grapeseed oil'. But I like your baby oil idea too. Do Both! Re lens, since I don't have anything but a loupe, I like your mag'yg app too. Do it all, compare - do a video too :)

@@mfb6310 No problem bro I live in Finland its hard to find any kind of chemical because of the greenies, just basic things . I cant even find anyone who does gold plating. The camera app is free it can make the tiniest gem look supersized Ill give you a tip they guy with only a loupe but a passion and as your probably not a competitor where to find the best gems dirt cheap is Chanthaburi Thailand there's a lab there that's GIA trained, Ive also checked them out a couple gems with GIA and 100% right on but that's an expensive test Ill save you from. For the big rocks India is good but very risky a lot of conmen, but I have picked up a couple huge sapphires that made up for all the fakes, Investigating the sources will save you a lot of headaches, money and allegations of fraud. Some of my best rocks I got off Ebay 2nd tip look for positive reviews in German because they are the best,

@@tonylohi3685 Oh. Sorry, we've got many meddling Nannies, as well. Grapeseed oil is a cooking oil, though, that shouldn't be a bother! But if so, wow . And no, I'm def'y not a competitor. I was with the troops in AFG as a civilian, and visited the little haji shops at different camps. After a few years, I'm sure I have a colorful collection of likely mostly plastic or glass, but it's all in the journey, right? I had fun trying to look smart, though, looking through a loop and groaning appropriately. Every once in a while, I bring out the pile and try to learn what to do. I'm ready to just see if they'll melt. You sound like you have learned a lot too! And I like your tips. I worked with men from India - they tell me the businessmen are the biggest penny pinchers! Regarding 2nd tip - I love. I have forgotten most of my german, but I'm not surprised at your tip at all. Thank you so much, Greetings from Michigan.
