The professor's comparing the mask fails with a student failing a test by 1 or 2 points is like comparing apples to oranges. A student failing means his attempt was useless. The masks being 1 or 2 points below does not render the mask useless. It would still be good for most everyday uses by none medical professionals. Certainly better than cloth masks or the open sided "surgical masks like Walmart hands out.

There are 2 aspects to protection, one is the filtration efficiency, many masks do not meet those requirements, but more problematic is the fit test. This is a test that determines how well the mask seals against your face. This is very difficult if not impossible to do with ear loops, which is why proper N95 masks all have head bands.
@looiart
@looiart 3 года назад
So wear it properly is the key....
@CHS10901
@CHS10901 3 года назад
@@looiart yes wearing it properly and fitting it properly is key, but the KN95 masks with ear loops can't work because the pressure required to seal it to your face would be so uncomfortable on your ears that you could not stand it. The one thing that is a big help with the ear loops is to add a couple of behind the head straps or ear savers. People should position one lower around the back of the head just above the neck and the other high on the crown of the head. This is a similar problem to the N95 masks as I have seen people not place the straps properly with them either. But as you said, "wear it properly"

Wouldn't the seal matter less the easier it is to breath through the mask? Nano-fiber masks are very breathable for example. Since the air doesn't meet as much resistance going through the filter it would have less pressure to go around the mask instead of through it.

Yeah, but I think it's a pretty alarmist response in this situation. There isn't anything magical about 95% filtration efficiency. A 94% efficient mask is about the same as 95% efficient one. They both offer ~10x better protection than cloth masks.
@johnwang9914
@johnwang9914 3 года назад
@@magicdave Yes, but due to the higher transmissibility of the variants, European nations are already mandating masks be FFP-2 rated , the European equivalent of N-95 and highrise apartments and n Canada have had transmissions traced to a few minutes encounter while masked in elevators. It may be advisable to use the better masks or a mask brace to improve fit if you are expecting to be in elevators or even mass transit. Note the double masking recommendation in the US due to the variants was effectively to use the second mask as a mask brace to improve fit and essentially was an attempt to deflect from affecting the medical N-95 supply chain. As to ten times better than say a surgical/procedural mask. If the fit can be improved to essentially 100% either by glue or mask braces, the filtration is 80% then if the material is doubled as in double masking, so long as the fit remains 100%, two 80% filtration layers equals 96% so technically the N-95 masks are really only double the effectiveness of surgical/procedural masks if the fit problem can be addressed. In theory double masking could almost be as effective as N-95 respirators especially if fit is improved by mask braces or clothing glue hence the US double masking recommendations.

The worst is the beauty supply store. Every mask they have is in clear unmarked packaging. Why is any of this stuff allowed to enter the country? Most of these masks aren't manufactured in the US.

I purchased a box of ecan95 made by eternity in Surrey BC approved by 🇨🇦 gov . Box is legit but unlike the the picture on the box mine had no labels at all on the masks them selves ? They do seem like good quality .I email manufacturer and was told they don't label them because that had a lot to produce and they skipped the labeling to get them out faster . ????? What other corners did they skip ?????

As someone is trained in mask fitting and testing the problem being no matter how good your mask is they are no good if not fitted properly. Shape of your nose, face shape. Skin thickness, if you have a beard, how and where you tie the straps. Weight fluctuation can have a large impact on respirator fit along with changes in the texture of people’s faces as they get older.

Well there are great travel restrictions with some exceptions mmm temporary foreign workers dont have to isolate in a hotel or get a covid test they can drive to job on private vehicle and isolate at where they work crammed in with hundreds of other workers. Why dont they have to isolate in a hotel? Just check exceptions to international travel on Canada's government web site.

Some helpful information in this piece, but there are some things that bother me about it. It poses the question, "*BUT* do they REALLY offer all that extra protection??" The actual question is, "Do ALL N95/KN95 brands offer extra protection?" But what bothers me more about this piece, is that the reporter herself is not properly asked, AND not wearing N95 or KN95 type mask, which seems to underscore what comes off to me as her skepticism regarding N95s in general. Why isn't she skeptical about the poorly-sealed mask she's wearing? Worst of all, is that ONE OF THE LAB TECHNICIANS TESTING THE MASKS IS IMPROPERLY MASKED. And they're determining mask safety? Kind of mind-boggling.

Tbh In low risk area 75% and above filtration is better than no mask or those cloth mask. In high risk area like hospitals you need real 95% filtration mask just saying. number 1 reason why we wear mask is to protect others!

Better than nothing. But here's also another kicker. Legit 95 masks, $29.99 for a pack of 3. Counterfeit ones, $29.99 for a pack of 100.

i wonder why the filtering efficiency of P100 or FFP3 particulate filters is never mentioned. P100 (US NIOSH standard) and/or FFP3 (EU CEN standard) has a higher filtering efficiency than the N95/FFP2/KN95. respirators. P100 and/or P3 particulate filters attached to a half face or full face respirator are reusable (i have been using mine for more than a year now).
@sv1201
@sv1201 2 года назад
There is no benefit to P100 or N100, because, for instance, 3M N95 already provide 99% protection, but P100 and N100 just make it much harder to breathe through.
@thestevecbr
@thestevecbr 2 года назад
@@sv1201 the 95 in N95 means 95% filtering efficiency. so what does 100 in P100 US NIOSH standard or P3 in EU CEN standard mean? yes, it has a higher filtering efficiency. far superior to N95. as for “harder to breath”, it is not because half or full face respirators have an intake valve from which air has been filtered by the P100 particulate filter and and exhaust valve to expel air easier. there is also a new filter attachment for the exhaust valve to filter expelled air. not to mention the total seal you get in the face from a half or full face respirator (by doing the negative and positive seal check prior to every use) as opposed to the questionable seal you get from an N95. AND the P100 particulate filter is reusable unlike N95s, and will last longer (according to the 3M website- it will last a pandemic wave). as long as the respirator and filter has been decontaminated/sanitized before or after every use.
