Doesn't matter if you already have a bunch of EVAP videos. More of the same videos just helps reinforce what you taught us before. Plus I'm very forgetful in my old age so it always helps me. :) Nice quick & too the point video. I like the explanations that you added at the end.

Very cool. I like your no-nonsense explanations for those who may not be very good at electrical work yet. The grounding by switch instead of switching the hot line reminds me of the VWs I worked on in the 70's.

Voltage drop is the most useful electrical test on simple circuits that do work. I use it all the time. Can't recall the last time I measured the resistance of a circuit during a test.

Another excellent video, honestly how can anybody put a thumbs down to this? I have worked on cars for over 40 years,and the speed of change has been incredible. Us older guys have to keep up with technology,if not we will all end up extinct. The last thing i want is to be is some old guy pushing a broom around,and talking about the good old days of carbs and contact breakers. My advice to any serious mechanics, techs or whatever they call us now, sign up to scanner danner premium,listen and learn.

Don't knock the random guy watching. I ended up furthering my career with the same company because i was a watcher. LOL A Supervisor noticed i showed a lot of interest watching a mechanic troubleshoot one of our machines that was down. Asked me if i would be interested in going into the shop as an apprentice mechanic in the new year, ended up going to trade school, got my Heavy Duty Certificate. Spent my entire career working for the same company. If i hadn't been a "watcher", it probably would have never happened.

ScannerDanner just to let you know am going to go premium, hopefully I can get some more information. We have a lot of diesel engine (4 cylinder) over here with EGR, under boost, D.P.F temp sensors / pressures , ad-blue knocks sensors , diesel Turbo problems with mechanical vacuum pumps problems etc etc. Do you cover some of them in your premium . Thanks again buddy .

I don't work on any diesel systems but I have many happy customers from primarily diesel markets (The UK for example). So much of the material transfers directly between gas and diesel systems. HAHAHA! "I hate this song" - I said the same exact thing the second I heard it playing, lol! I was about to comment, "The music was so good until 2:52 ... " :D I hated it the first time I ever heard it back it the day! It hits a nerve and always has. Super annoying! Great lesson as always brother! I think once I start doing more of this sort of thing hands on, I'll be able to retain it better. I learn faster by doing. I need alot of repetition from book or video learning. Just the way I'm wired. Got your book here ready to go in that new section of my barn once it's built. Speaking of that, the trusses are on their way - supposed to be here any minute! Foundation and drainage work is all done. All I need is the building and the concrete floor and I'm ready to rock! My 10k lb. lift is all tarped up outside - just need a place to put it. :) The scope is going to have to wait another year, unfortunately - been bleeding money this month as you can imagine. I've got 3 test lights though, lol ... plus the most important tool - your BOOK! :) For now, I've got to drag myself back out of my warm house into 36°, and crawl back under this 2500HD that's in my driveway for a steering box & pitman arm, plus tensioner, belt and idler. Came in for some lunch while the bubbles settle down in that hydro boost system. What a pain to bleed! Who was that random guy? Google / RU-vid spy? LOL! Talk to you next time! God bless!

ScannerDanner, awesome troubleshooting skills...I look forward to getting a subscription ....I have an 09 Escalade hybrid with the P0449 and followed one of your other evap vids titled " evap on any GM" I am convinced it's an open in the coil inside the vent solenoid, because I get no click at all when I bench tested it with my power probe... I supplied 12v to the hot wire and negative on control wire....I tried to follow the second route you demonstrated...the one with just the probe and not a test light, because I didn't completely understand the 1st procedure...my question is you said to be very careful not to send current, because it could fry the pcm, however when you back probed your test light onto your "Phil's" tool, and then supplied from your power probe, did that send power to the "driver"? And if so, please explain how that is any different than just using power probe alone, and supplying power. Hopefully, you understand what I'm trying to say...sorry for the dumb question, but I was just curious on the difference. Right, from the start I'm probing, 12v on the hot and 0 on the control and when I turn the solenoid off using scan tool the control wire makes probe beeb and light up green, negative 0 volts..so I am assuming this means driver is testing good? Thanks again.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 лет назад
Without watching this video to address your question specifically. I think I can answer from a foundational point of view. First, it has to do with the driver design (power or ground side switching). If you want to use the existing wiring to help you "energize" an output, you MUST know your circuit design. If it is power side switched by the computer, then one of the wires goes to a constant ground. If it is ground side switched by the computer, then one of the wires goes to a constant power. What you then need to do is to provide what the computer provides. If it is power side switched you give the correct wire power. If it is ground side switched you give the correct wire a ground. BUT DO NOT get this mixed up!!! If you do it wrong, you can provide the wrong polarity and cook the computer driver. Hope that makes sense. By the way, this would be my Chapter 3 material we are talking about now.

Now I'm wondering if it was an evap problem that gave me grief with a caravan I had years ago. When I would tank up, it would run like crap for about 30 seconds then run fine. Had to stay on the gas or it would die. No check engine light, did it almost every time I got gas. Didn't matter if I filled it or just put a few gallons in. Never did find the problem. Had good fuel psi, held it too when I shut it off.

Some Engine Management Systems don't set a P0449...pre 2004 - P0449, post some set P02422.. Unfortunately OBD II is not consistent. Check out the detecting conditions for a 2011 Santa Fe...Fuel tank pressure sensor too low. DTC - P0449, no circuit malfunction. If this vehicle has an open it sets a P0447 for CCV...check it out...

How can I get a hold of you durectly? I've already had Ivan (Pine Hollow) look @ my 2000 Malibu 3.1L vin code J. He had smoked tested the entire EVAP system and found out that the Purge valve solenoid had a small leak in it and that the vent valve solenoid was perfectly fine. So I had replaced the Purge valve solenoid and now I am getting the same 2 codes again! P0443 and P0449. I also had to replace the catalytic converter which I also did! What I mean by the vent valve was fine is it too was smoke tested and bi-directional controlled (NO LEAKS)

Paul, does your book show lab scope probe placement to do tests ?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 лет назад
The placement of the lab scope and how to set it up, hinges greatly on your understanding of the circuit you are trying to test. This is what I focus on the most. If you buy the eBook, you will be able to check out the material without risk as I will give you a full refund if it is not for you. This would also be my suggestion if you wanted a paper version, I can apply the cost of the eBook toward the paper book if you wanted to exchange it. Thank you so much!
