4-TRACK TIPS AND GEAR LIST: 424recording.c...
I'm testing out the Tascam 414 mkii 4-track cassette recorder I acquire from Jay! I go through all of the main recording functions. I'm going to do a more in depth video once I have some more time with the machine, but this one should serve as a good introduction to the basic features of the Tascam 414 mkii.

I bought one of these in about 2001 brand new. Had it until about 2022. Kept it in mint condition. Glorious. Then, like an idiot, I sold it. Redeemed myself by buying a 464. Which is objectively a better machine. But selling the 414 mkii was a dumb play.

I grew up with this machine. In good condition it's amazing. Definitely check the power supply is correct because that can create weird buzzes. Been there. The correct power supply is cheap on ebay. I had a dead track on mine and took it to get repaired at Tascam. They cleaned it and changed the belts and now it's in really good shape. I've done some great recordings on it. I really hope you're able to restore it.

David Paul thanks, David! Good to hear from you. Yeah I’m hoping it just needs a good cleaning and perhaps a new PSU. I’ll keep ya posted as to the progress!

David Paul how recently? Tascam doesn’t still service them do they?
@DaveZula
@DaveZula 6 лет назад
gameloozer731 This was several years ago. TEAC was based in Montebello, California forever until recently, which is pretty close to where I live, and they would service stuff there. There is a company still in the same building called Digitron who apparently are now the authorized repair facility for TEAC. They have serviced four different machines for me. The last time was probably two or three years ago. I would imagine they're still there.

Just got (and started playing with) one of these recently. Cool unit for sure. Regarding those back XLR inputs (for me at least), it seems that the L-input DOES only bus to the L-designated tracks. It also seems that you don't need to "arm" the channels to hear yourself. They can totally be in "safe" mode. What IS interesting is that you DO need to have the track "armed" to be able to visually see any recording levels/lights. But yea, in terms of hearing yourself, all that matters is that the bottom 3 controls for the track (input/trim/level) are active (and matching the corresponding L/R channel). I think the reason you thought you were hearing yourself when you "armed" track 2 (while in the L-input) was because you still had the track 1 input/trim/level controls active. Totally possible I may have this wrong as I just started toying with this thing. I'm loving it, though. And much of what I've learned has come from all of your videos - thanks so much for all the time you've put in. Great teacher!

Update on this - so strange. So apparently, as long as you use the correct/matching track controls for the corresponding input, you can still RECORD to any track. That's probably what you meant in your video. It may not be the most intuitive thing, but I'll take it if it expands the functionality I thought it had - awesome.

Hey, Scott! Thanks for this. Appreciate you taking the time to explain this. These machines are strange to say the least; tbh I don't have nearly as much experience with the 414 as I do with the 424 so I was basing my knowledge off of that machine thinking there would be some parallels or work similarly. The one I have is also in pretty bad shape and needs work; I wouldn't be surprised if something inside needs to be reworked or replaced. That's how I figured it would work (matching track controls for the corresponding input) which is how the 424 works. I'll have to revisit this video/machine once I get the 414 working again. Thanks again, Scott!

I still love playing with these things, especially this 4-track model (414mkII). I like using it in its own and using it to record just one thing into and then sending that into Ableton, just for adding some 'color' to that sound. Those trim faders (they're like input gain levels) will sometimes clean themselves if you gently slide them up and down for a few seconds. One of mine is in mint condition, but others I've come across (especially other peoples') have had some crackling just like yours, which seems sadly to have gone through the wringer! Cool channel BTW! 😎👍

@424Recording 3 года назад
Thanks, Olmstead! Yeah, that's a good tip for getting the faders to work again btw. That happens with my 424 mkiii. And as a color box... these can't be beat for sure! Thanks for watching!

Next time you do a video like this, you should try to include the sounds that you are getting from the system.

Yeah, good call. I realized I should have been doing that about halfway thru. Live and learn, I guess. Next time for sure

I just got a 414 recently and everything seems to work, I just have trouble getting any sort of audio when I want to playback what I have recorded. Any recommendations?

Any tips for getting the crud out of the pan pots? Cross fading is no longer an option on my 414.

Detoxit? I've heard of people using electronics cleaner or similar to loosen the crud

Super cool video. U know your stuff ! I have a question an maybe u can help me. I have a tascam porta 07 and it plays fine. And i actually really like the sound it records. However when I add an extra track i have a ton load of crosstalk between the recorded track and de playback track. Tried already rexording on 1 and 4 still lot of ceosstalk. It doesnt seem normal. Any ideas where the problem could comw from? Cheers Daniel
@424Recording
@424Recording 5 лет назад
Thanks, Daniel! It sounds like you're recording too loudly. Try recording the tracks with less gain. Happy recording. Thanks for watching!

That's the 414 I have. Mine has also gone wonky...there's an intermittent low end rumble that happens sometimes during playback. It's a shame b/c those slider trims are BEASTLY with drum loops. Maybe I'll get mine serviced too.
@424Recording

John Pittman yeah I might be taking this one apart with Jay. Some of the issues are annoying to say the least... might be easier to fix than the 424

Yeah I hope so. I love the simplicity of the controls. It's a cute little device. Those Pre-Amps? Someone clever should do something with those :)

I can buy one for 250€ Looks good, but yeah.. Pretty expensive right? looks in mint condition, and with the box, What would Mike do?

It's so tough to tell anymore. The prices have exploded and it is tough to find a decent one. I'd say if it is good shape, snag it. The way things are going, you could always resell it for the same price. Good luck!

Hey I just got one but the problem is that the playback is too fast. It came with a Metallica cassette tape and when I wanted to test it to see if it worked it played but the playback speed is too fast even with the pitch control all the way down
@424Recording
@424Recording 4 года назад
The tapes play at a faster speed in these machines to combat noise. I would try recording something and playing it back to see if you have the same issue. If you don't, you're good, if you do, there's most likely an issue with the belts.

Hi 424 Recordings. I recently got a Tascam 414 MkII and I really enjoy it. I've been using it with blank tapes to record my stuff and retrieve that lo fi, retro feel in the sound. However i'm having an issue. I wanted to sample old industry tapes (the police, sonic youth etc) but whenever I play them the speed is way too high and it has that chipmunk effect. While when I play the tapes I recorded myself with it it's regular speed. I've tried playing with the speed knob but even down to the minimum the music is playing way too fast. Any thoughts on this issue ? Can I like open the Tascam and reduce the speed or do I have to find a unit that runs at a lower speed ? Thanks for your videos anyway
@424Recording
@424Recording 5 лет назад
You'll have to use another cassette deck to record the tapes to the 4-track tape. The 4-track tape runs at a higher speed to cut down on hiss so any regular tape that you put in it will sound sped up and you'll hear both sides of the tape playing at the same time. Happy recording. Thanks for watching!

Is there a way to record tapes at a normal speed?
@424Recording
@424Recording 4 года назад
Hmmm Idk. I know the idea of recording them faster is to lessen the hiss but there could be a recorder out there that records at normal speed I'm sure
