Want to know how to check a used power supply and how to test it to see if it's good enough to put into a gaming PC? Well today we use a combination of quick load testing and a power supply tester to sift through crap power supplies and good ones.
Get a power supply tester here: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/q8oVbSFm
However I do apologise after returning back from the depths of extroverted travelling and zip zap mentally draining outside activities, I found myself returning back to the Tech YES Cave and needing to regenerate and recharge the batteries, though now that they are recharged, it's full steam ahead!

I have one of these power supply testers myself, according to the manual of my power supply tester you must put some sort of load on the PSU by using either a fan or connecting a mechanical HDD when testing it in order to get a more trustworthy power good reading otherwise that number can not be trusted. These testers are a great way to see if a PSU would be dangerous to hook up to a new system. But they can not check how a power supply behaves under heavy load so you can not fully test the health of a power supply. For that special and expensive testing equipment are needed. Or one must test it in a actual system and see if it works OK under heavy load.

@matthewmckenzie7687
@matthewmckenzie7687 4 года назад
You need a "load selectable" dummy load, matched to the current that should be supplied, which also means you need to know what that current should be. A good supply will have a placard. You also need to burn in, so you get results at operating temperatures. You need good cables as well, each PCIe slot needs to supply 6.25A (Ideally 6.5). Never test with real components in case the voltage spikes rather than droops.
@greywolf271
@greywolf271 2 года назад
You don't need expensive test equipment. If you work in electronics engineering you can build a very competent PSU tester yourself. Brand names are only useful if you have a legal contract with someone to carry out certified testing on their equipment.

Word to the wise please stay away from the "Corsair CX430W" Power supplies(I paid $50USD each for them from Amazon), I had 3x of them all went faulty over time, had 1x CX430w that would make a high pitched coilwine sound when the PC was plugged in [while being powered off]. I had 1x CX430 stopped powering up on a intel core 2 quad q9650 HTPC using a older 512MB MSI Twin Frozr GTS 250(6-pin pci express low power graphics card). Reading multiple reviews online- the Corsair CX430w is manufactured by another company & Corsair just throws their sticker on it, many people had problems with this power supply , TBH i'm surprised corsair has not been sued yet!

Go with Seasonic Focus Plus and be fine for 10+ Years. Brands say nothing about PSUs. Example: Bequiets Pure Power and System Power PSUs are just Garbage. Seasonic has evolved really good but the older PSUs from them were also crap. On the Opposite Bequiets Dark Power Pro 11 PSUs are absolutly good to use. Still lacking behind the Seasonic Focus Plus ones, but they good enough to trust them for 5-7+ years. Low Ripple and Noise is in the most times a good Indicator of a decent PSU, also stable Voltages in Crossload scenarios. Check some tests before buying PSUs. Superflower has also really Good PSUs but they still sell REALLY crap ones. So a Brand says nothing. Be aware of that and dont cheap out on the Heart of your System.
@Sam-K
@Sam-K 4 года назад
Well, the Core 2 Quad draws around 95W whereas the GTS250 is rated at 150W for a total of 245W on the 12v rail whereas the single 12v rail on the CX430 is rated at 28A i.e 336W. Now "theoretically", you still have a headroom of 336W - 245W = 91W but the reality isn't that simple! For instance, the CX430's maximum operating temperature is a measly 30c for full operating power! Not only that but CPUs and GPUs often exceed their rated or perhaps 'marketed' TDP, especially when it comes to factory overclocked GPUs. Consider all that and it's clear as day that the CX430 was inadequate to handle your system! Personally, I think the CX430 is only meant for system with 65W processors and ~75W GPUs, such as the GTX1650. Go beyond that and you're practically pushing it to the limits.
@xxcr4ckzzxx840
@xxcr4ckzzxx840 4 года назад
@@Sam-K Cant agree with that. A PSU needs to handle 100 percent load over the full time of its life and if its going bad, then it is like that, but especially then it shouldnt crap out the way that all your Hardware gets fucked too. The Efficency goes down a lot by putting 100 percent Load on that things, but if u dont care about that, then 100 Percent is fine till the Caps go bad in that things. Normaly u go with the TDP + 50 Watt for the Mainboard and then +10 or 20 percent for good Measurement to check which PSU u need. That will be around 360 Watts. Lets be really generously and lets say thats 400 Watts. Even under the HEAVIEST Load that thing could produce, the PSU shouldnt crap tf out. And it did. So wedgoku is right. These PSUs are just crap.

With PSU tester attached when you turn off the power and the tester is still beeping that indicates the capacitor works. So beeping longer is better. Some cheapo PSU only beeps once or twice, while hi end one will beep much longer. That's based on my personal experience, give me an advice if I'm wrong.

I had an FSP-PSU in my OEM-PC for 10 years. Other than that I heard a rattling sound (coilwhine or weared out fan-bearing) it kept working. The 12V rail could handle somewhat higher power graphics cards (like a 5700 XT). That PC from 2009 also had a duct from the CPU-cooler to the perforated side-panel. I hated that duct because it made it difficult to do anything in the case, including dedusting the CPU-cooler.

Another tip from a HDD, SSD horder. Using HWinfo64 to read the drives can tell you if the drive has bad or replaced sectors. It even tells you how long the drive has been powered up (in hours or years) also how many on and off cycles its been through and a lot of other useful info. Even if the drive shows up and works with a OS, doesn't necessarily mean that its good. For example, I have a 1TB TASHIBA dual ported HDD and it loads Windows, games and all. Though 1nce it gets to 850GB's or more, it starts corrupting data when i try to copy data back from the drive. Though, i was very surprised to see the support HWinfo64 has when it comes to reading the remaining drive life of SSD's.

The irony of SAS is that even new/unused older 2TB/4TB 3.5" Enterprise drives can be obtained very cheaply and relevant HBAs cost diddly squat (older cards like the LSI 3442, or newer models like the P400 that support 6Gbit); performance is excellent, eg. the ST3600857SS is a good model, much faster access time than consumer SATA. Even 2.5" SAS is often now quite cheap. I have some benchmark data here: www.sgidepot.co.uk/diskdata.html Many of the same models are available as SATA aswell, but they usually cost more. The down side of SAS from a consumer perspective is that installing an HBA on a consumer mbd will add to the POST time and perhaps some or even most home users would not like that. The nice thing about a dedicated HBA though is they offer good hw RAID options and some can be fitted with battery backup for full power loss protection, etc. It's an interesting option for someone who might like the idea of much better storage reliability for important data such as family photos, eg. 2x 2TB Seagate/Hitachi Enterprise in RAID1 (or 4 disks in RAID10 for both performance and redundancy, this is the modeI I often used). However, perhaps most just prefer the convenience of connecting something like an external USB3 drive to regularly backup their data, though it's bizarre how many home users never do any kind of backup (going to be so many people in future decades who lose their entire media archive when the sole device storing it all dies). The advantage of SAS is that relevant models are less likely to go wrong in the first place, assuming they haven't already had a hard life (though Enterprise SATA should offer the same reliability, even if 15K models are rare; I try to find Seagate ES.3 and newer versions of Hitachi HUS such as the 4TB HUS724040ALE640 - I won one of these recently for 59 UKP, it had very little usage logged). Which raises the biggest concern about SAS, or indeed any disk obtained 2nd-hand, ie. how much it has already been used. Ask for the SMART data if possible. Cheap Enterprise drives could have been running continuously under heavy loads for years, or they may hardly have been used at all. Not an issue with NOS (new old stock) but for used drives definitely something to consider, hence why I always ask a seller if they can provide the summary output from Crystal Disk Info. Some top-end enthusiast mbds have had onboard SAS controllers in the past, eg. the Asrock X79 Extreme 11, but such controllers usually do not come with any cache RAM which rather spoils random 4K performance. If one does ever consider SAS, try to find an HBA which includes some cache RAM (1GB+ preferable) and better still has the option for battery backup. Another advantage of SAS with an HBA: since the HBA stores the info about any defined RAID, a mbd failure will not harm the RAID, something that cannot be said of an ordinary consumer mbd RAID controlled by the mbd chipset and BIOS - if the mbd fails then the RAID could be hard to recover. For really fun storage though, try FC. :) Optical cables, stick the storage unit in the basement, help warm the house in winter. :D

I really want to say one thing. Please read it. I recently bought a PSU for nearly $12. Its probably a local brand in India named "Clarion" It resembles the cheap AliExpress PSUs very much. It says to be a 550W PSU. And it has a name of "Clarion JM-PS-620". It also has a 800W version for $20 which is "JM-PS-920". I have two motherboard of LGA 1156. One is Intel DH55TC and the other one is ASUS P7H55-M Pro. As you know ASUS has the 8pin CPU power connector whereas Intel has 4pin. While using the new clarion PSU (which also has an 8pin CPU power connector and a 6pin GPU power connector) my Intel motherboard suddenly stopped working. The little LED was lighted but the the motherboard would not post. After surfing through lots of videos I found that it may be due to the RTC Crystal. I already had a second motherboard. So I took risk and soldered a new RTC Crystal after removing the old one. And bam! The mobo started working. I ran it with my old 250W PSU which had 4pin power connector. Then after some days due to some reasons I changed the PSU with the "Clarion" one. And again the motherboard stopped working on second boot. Actually the soldered RTC was loosened. I changed it and used the same PSU but this time it is not working after third time. So my question is, "Is it possible that using a 8pin PSU in a 4pin supported motherboard may cause something like power surge? In this case 4 ports are connected to motherboard and the other 4 are lying disconnected. And also the "Clarion" PSU is working fine with the ASUS P7H55-M Pro motherboard that has 8pin CPU power supply port. The good VRMs may also be the reasons for the motherboard kicking still. Please look into this!

What people need to understand is that PSU are rated as peak power and also maximum duty based a specific epoch or time in which the PSU is stressed at maximum output (peak) power. One should never hit that peak power output, mind you. They should have a load line of no more than 75% maximum, that's to save the life of the PSU and your system, too.

Testing a PSU under realistic load conditions is what the majority of users want-- but without risking good equipment with potentially faulty PSUs. Whatever the decision on acceptable risk-- for example, using even a junk system whose components are expendable-- the issue remains checking power output under actual operating conditions. To do that, one source recommends using an extended (unbent) metal paper clip, inserting this into the mainboard connector at the appropriate contact number, then measuring the voltage with an RMS-grade VOM. Does anyone have another good idea?

in my experience, using power supply testers don't really work well for me. i'd rather load it up on a computer that i want to run it with then test it that way. load up games, stress tests, benchmarks. it takes forever but it works 100% of the time.

@LIGHTING Not all psu's fail in such a way as to take the items they are powering - better engineered power supplies will fail dead, cutting off power when they die.

Only problem is that most components dont fully stress psu so proper load tester would be way better (i had FX8320 OC and r9 280x OC and it was drawing like 450W from the wall, that didn't even fully load my 620W seasonic)
@franzb69

@@cekpi7 this is why i test it on a computer that i actually plan to use it on to make sure it can handle the load.

Testing tips: For ddr3 ram- have a hp z400 system, doesnt need a hdd, when you boot it up with the all your ram to test, it will tell you in post which ram sticks are bad instantly! Psu-psu tester Hdd-hiren boot disc hdd sentinel, gives your the health of the drive and list of bad sectors to determine if the drive is working and is healthy enough go repair and use.

Dead power supplies are usually quite easy to fix. Weak = replace the input capacitors. Dead = replace the switching transistors. A little simplified perhaps but that's basically the case. Also, SAS controllers can be found cheaply on ebay: www.ebay.com.au/itm/x/283541208286

PSU Brand is meaningless so are what they state on the labels this is why the likes of jonnyguru was great lots of testing and full break down of what is inside. you could re use a lot of those parts from PSU that are dead the likes of the fans the molex connectors even the cables to make your own extensions. They still use those ducts in some gaming pc the design has just slightly changed I saw alienware with one recently

are you talking about Meth ? right its the only thing i can think of i hate that shit saw some bad stuff as kid so learned the hard way what it does and seeing people use it friends or well kind of friends not really good friends probably would have never been around it unless it was from them but we used to play games and foot ball as kids and then to see them all almost start doing that shit was shitty

I know what you think the sticky stuff was, but FYI its far far more likely to just be vape juice from people vaping, I have done cleanup of the thing you suspect and it is not sticky like that, but vape juice is and smells sweet, vape juice is bar far the worst thing for pc's especially PC fans and coolers.

damn... he's referring to smoking ice: "Smoking ice" is a term commonly used to refer to the consumption of methamphetamine by smoking it. Methamphetamine, also known as meth, crystal meth, or ice, is a highly addictive stimulant drug that can be smoked, snorted, injected, or taken orally. When methamphetamine is smoked, it creates a white or bluish smoke that is inhaled into the lungs, producing a rapid and intense high that can last for several hours. However, smoking methamphetamine can have serious and potentially life-threatening health consequences, including addiction, cardiovascular problems, respiratory problems, dental problems, and neurological damage.

When I was younger I did some computer repair. I once got in a PC that was so nasty from smoking that it still makes me puke thinking about it today. I had to trash the whole thing because everything was caked in a thick layer of tobacco/nicotine/tar and had the foulest smell ever. People, if you smoke, please don't do it near your computer.
