This video was well made and super helpful. Thank you so much! I collect buttons and have thousands of them. I'm sure there must be at least a few bakelite buttons in there and now I know how to tell for certain. Thanks again!

Thanks Margaret..,5 years later...I've got lots of old buttons to test. I just watched someone do a baking soda in water for testing Bakalite...not sure if it's a good a test as the chemical stuff.

Many people don't like "bak a lite" instead of Bakelite or they don't consider this valid testing.

I’ve got a faux tortoise shell comb with rhinestones, and I’m trying to figure out what it is so I can safely clean it. My mom died in 2016, but even the hot water test is not helping me because her perfume really soaked into everything she owned!

I think I have bakelite bracelets. I did hot water test and after the color turned foggy. Which rubbed off. Does that fogginess happen with bakelite?

Do you have any idea what kind of plastic was used for simulated leather on cases, bags, purses, etc in the early 1900's? Do you have any suggestions on how to clean and maintain this kind of early simulated leather plastic? Thanks!

I have a question. I have a lot of necklaces from my grandmother do they are old but.... they look like bakelite but doesn't smell or test like bakelite. No smell at all but or looks like they have a lacquer layer that is pilling off. The beads without the layer I have tested also but same results. What can it be? Safe to thow away or a gem?
