Rare plants are just the buzzword of today, what people really want are unique plants and I think that's where the future of the plant world is heading, once most of the rare plants become common due to flooding of the market. Then the most expensive plants will be those that look unique in their form, like a piece of organic artwork.
and it’s kind of like the tulip mania situation. everyone is buying it to try to make profit and everyone keeps raising the prices. the moment monstera albo becomes a big box store plant it’s price will crash lol
The more expensive the variegated version of common plants are, the less interested I am. I’m not paying €200 for a white Monstera, if I want a variegated plant, I already have my cute pothos.
Right?! It made me smile watching it! I love common plants. And right now they’re just all I can afford haha. I love sharing my plants with people as well!
@@andrescastillo07 i tried taking notes of what rare plants to get but so far i only have a gloriosum and clarinervium. Others are just too expensive. 😅
It's not. They are the same species, it just grows a bit differently depending on the condition it's grown in. Give it lots of light and something to climb and it will get big eventually
Yesss!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I love common houseplants!!!! I am waiting for the more uncommon to become more affordable hopefully one day so for now I’m sticking with the cheaper stuff I can find! 😅 it’s awesome I can find some uncommon here and there locally though!!
Plot twist, I actually love my common plants more than most of my rare ones 🙈😳 my micans, scandens brazil, marantas, stromanthe triostar and neon pothos are devastatingly beautiful 😍
@@leas.8603 yes exactly!! I bought one in 2019 when there was that one batch - sold for 8€ per full full plant. But then the webshops bought them up from the garden center and sold them for much more and they never became available again at that price 🙄😩
@@crystalgumm3741 right?! I think they'll become more affordable soon as they're quite easy to grow but the growers needed time to grow them out and I don't think they're there yet 🤭😩
This Video was just so cute, how giggly and happy you looked made my day. I mostly have common plants and I LOVE them. Most of them are just so chill and can handle my depressive episodes the best. I can't even say I have favorites because it changes all the time. The only gripe I have with Calathea/Maranthas are my inability to get the spidermites of off them🙃
I was watching some shorts earlier and a YTer bought several ladybugs 🐞and released them on the plants 🪴 to eat the lil buggies!! I thought it was a great idea!!
The asparagus fern is actually a relative to the eatable asparagus, if I recall correctly. The vegetable asparagus would look similar to the asparagus fern, if we'd let it reach maturity, but it is harvested at a young age
I love watching real plant nerds geek out about common plants. I also really love Calathea but I’m also running out of space and have to keep room for the really rare and special stuff. Plus, I don’t love the idea of spider mite magnets so I try to limit the Alocasia, Calathea, verrucosum problem children in my care if I can.
The asparagus fern always reminds me of a Norfolk Pine. I love them. Love your channel girl! You are such an inspiration to me. I also struggled a lot growing up and as a result I have a lot of mental obstacles that make it hard to have hope. I’m in my early twenties and working really hard to be something worthwhile. Your story really inspires me and gives me hope that I still have a chance too. Thank you for your content and especially your mental health videos. You are awesome!
I have the same top 3 common houseplants. I have owned my Heart leaf philodendron for 3 years and it is still my absolute favorite. Though my Maranta Lemon Lime is probably 4th place.
Can you do a video explaining the difference between large form and small form monsteras? I got mine as a cutting from a friend of a friend and it has fenestrations, but I would call it medium sized. I have no idea if it's large or small form. I'm really hoping it can grow big and beautiful.
Look up pic comparison to help you identify. I would help but can't post pics on here. The stem and the ruffle mentioned above are a few ways to know. You could also join a monstera fb group and they'd tell you for sure which you have. You likely have the small if it wasn't specified to you. But who knows you may have gotten lucky and got a large. (These names don't indicate sizing - also known as deliciosa and borsigiana)
Love this one and seeing what common stuff you enjoy! Many years ago my friend bought me a plant for my bday. I kept looking at it through out the day and thought I was losing my mind because it kept changing positions. I took a couple pictures just to verify my sanity, then looked up rattlesnake calathea to see if moving was normal. It blew my mind, I didn't know any plants did this. Now I have 6 prayer plants, many you named as your favs!
I love seeing the asparagus fern making it in this list, as I was first introduced to that gorgeous plant from you and was obsessed about getting it ! 😆
Scindapsus pictus have different varieties same as epipremnum. Like the one you have looks to me like it's silvery anne or argyraeus.s ilvery anne have silvery tips and are more likely to get fully silver leaves and in general just feel like a thicker leaf, argyraeus have smaller leaves, are speckled, have a silver edge around and don't generally get big chunks of silver. it was hard to tell from your pot, but if you google both, you can see the difference quite easily. the one you put up in the photo looks to be exotica (you can tell if the leaf "ears" overlap at the base, this is the only scidapsus that has this)
Glad you mentioned micans, you can grow them so many ways in a hanging basket up a moss pole or leave it to grow up the wall and talk about stunning I love all my micans. Really enjoyed the change of area for the vid and great content, I must admit I have been waiting for your vid to come out this week, thank you.
I love this video. It really grounds people in the beginning of our collections and what started the love of plants. I actually had been moving my collection back to the more hardy and beautiful plants I started with. And all the ones you have said are on my list. In one form or another. 😊 More sought after plants were annoying me with the drama/ people’s behaviour that come with them. I do suggest as a fellow Calathea lover the Musaica. It is so hardy and gorgeously. I have it in a self water pot soil and leave it alone for a few weeks. It’s always pushing new leaves. Maybe not as colourful but the dimension or the networking on the leaves. 😘 chefs kiss. Definitely interested in a picking out a large form video. And maybe a what to look for when picking a plant. Multi- planted, insects damage, rot on discount plants. Things like that. 😊 Wish I could buy from you in Australian. Let us know if you will ever open up sales to the British colony across the pond. 🇦🇺🌱🙏🏼 Thanks again and love the work. 🥰
I just put my hederaceum on a bamboo pole!!! And filmed it to share! It’s suchhh a fast grower! I love them. I have literally so many all over my house hahaha so easy to prop and just have sooo mannnyyy
Kaylee i love you and your channel! Can you please do a "lecca for beginners" video? I want to move some of mine from soil but dont know what im doing, i trust your advice and need help 🙏
Love scindapsus! The one in the photo you showed is an Exotica, big paddle leaves with silver edges and large silver sections. The one you do own does look like it could be a Silver Lady. Both beautiful!
one of my favourite common house plants is the begonia maculata. it has big stems which can store water 💦 and the leaves have beautiful half moon shapes that can lean to the right and left side. so a full pot looks like a bouquet. plus the old leaves have burgundy undersides edit: i forgot to mention the h u g e amount of growth points that plant has. it is insane!
Currently got: snake plant zeylanica, snake plant cylindrica, Chinese money plant, fittonia, ficus elastica robusta, string of pearls, variegated string of hearts. I don’t really have a favourite however I do like the big leaves on the ficus. Probably can’t choose a favourite as not all of them are really established yet
I'm with u on the marble queen, just 're potted min and a bigger moss pole. The leaves are the size of my hand now. Love maranta and calathea. Gotten into cacti to at the mo, love hoya and dischidia x
Both the Heart Leaf and the Micans are also my two top favorites, followed by the Epipremnums. I have more Heart Leafs and Epipremnums than any other plants in my collection. 💚💚💚💚
Please take us along shopping whenever you are ready to stock up on some of the common ones! That would be a blast ( it makes me think of watching you shop for the wall and all)
Hello, thank you for the videos. I'd like to request two topics: 1. A home tour showing your personal plants and how you grow it. 2. An in-depth guide to LECA, especially how you transform plants from soil to it. Best regards
My tip for keeping prayer plants and ferns, keep the soil moist, even the asparagus fern.. I bought this tiny one once, and it's been with me for years, and it's grown big and beautiful. I absolutely adore it, it sent out these loooong vines in winter, as I had placed it in a darker area, and I tried to make it so it would grow out around my hanging lamps, but it was just to dark for it. I guess I have to buy some growlight bulbs for next winter. 🤔😉
My favorite commoners: -Raven ZZ (whom I named Edgar…if you get it, you get it 😂🙈) -Micans (because it reminds me of mom for some reason -Button fern (seriously, THEE cutest thing) -Any and ALL rubber tree plants, especially the ruby -Syngonium pink splash (not super common, but I live in Ohio, USA and they’ve been in nurseries for pretty cheap around me this year)
Half of my collection is Calathea and other prayer plants. They are just stunning and so easy (for me, I know not everyone has a good time with them)! As a newer subscriber, it’s neat to see what your favorite common plants are!
I love my lemon lime Maranta! I have had it less than 9 months and he has been blooming for me the last month. And I have 2 asparagus ferns as well. They are their own vibe, for sure!
Ooh, I'd looove to have a Monstera deliciosa large form, but I have no room for one of those babies in my present home. Maybe someday. I like the heart leaf philo. I have several in my home. Some climbing up a trallis and some trailing. Actually both the Micans (P. hederaceum var. hederaceum) and the heart leaf philo (P. hederaceum var. oxycardium) seem to be two natural variations of the same species. Correct, the asparagus fern is definitely not a fern. It's, well, an Asparagus ☺(Asparagaceae family). I love the Alocasia calidora👌I also saw those growing in nature when I was in Thailand. Maybe someday I'll have room for one. Are they very prone to spider mites when grown in common home conditions?
I recently bought a Monstera Delicioso and a Philidendron Micans. Both are very beautiful plants, the Delicioso is growing a new leaf with lots of slits and the current leaves are pretty large but only have single slits and some of the leaves are small but complete. It has some edge burns on one of leaves but I'm sure it'll do great. I currently am keeping it in my grow tent with my cannabis plants. (I know it's not a great idea to keep under direct light, but for humidity I think it's perfect for it.) As for the Micans, it wasn't doing so well but I'm sure it will bounce back stronger then ever after I keep an eye on it for a while.
This might be my favorite of your videos, so far. I loved your imitation of the alocasia. Desperation has caused many US growers to re-introduce some really old, classic Granny plants and I'm in love. I'm staring at a Sugar Vine right now and it's a bouncy cutie. I cannot grow a Heartleaf phil. Mine is stunted and unhappy. My calatheas are among my most neglected plants, by their choice. The minute I fuss, they start their antics, especially that Fusion White. When I let them alone, they're their own little jungle.
So funny but that’s all my favorites as well! Only just fell back in love with the “old asparagus fern” got hubby to dig the ( weed) out from behind the back shed!! 😂
I have a Blue Star fern, and it is super finicky. It didn't do well by my back window, so I ended up putting it in the bathroom window. It seems to like it there but it goes crispy really quick if you let the soil go dry. It's a nice looking plant but not as easy as most ferns.
I can certainly appreciate the rare plants, but I've also just been the type to get whatever plant speaks to me. I have absolutely never cared about trends, course I've been a plant parent for 20 years, lol. The plants everyone refers to as "common" or "easy" quite honestly are among my favorites. Gardening should be serene & calming, so whatever stress I can cut from my collection or care is a win in my book.
Ad Asparagus - yeah, it´s only called "asparagus fern" based on visual similarity but the botanical name is Asparagus plumosus and belongs to Asparagaceae family which doesn´t belong to fern families :)
I had an asparagus fern back in the 90's. It lived for many years i left it outside all the time and during the winter it would die back and in the spring it would spring back to life! I live in the USA in 7b
I think the Asparagus fern you have is an Asparagus setaceus or also known as Protasparagus setaceus, I have another asparagus fern (don't recall the botanical name now), and it is super hardy. I had it in my basement for 8-9 months and didn't water it once and it only had a regular light bulb over it and it still survived. It stores water in its thick roots that it can use later.
Oh my god!! I am getting a Stromanthe Triostar as soon as I can afford. If anyone sees my comment from Australia, please shout out where I can get a good one please? Even if it’s a baby.
monstera deliciousa, pothos, ferns and zzplants... they are all common and they are all easy for me, i love most philodendron species, adore them. i'm a clutter junkie lol, my mom calls my room the plant emporium, i have 17 in my bedroom
Why asparagus fern is not a true fern. Somebody might have said this already, but there are too many comments to read them all. True ferns reproduce by spores (mainly from under the leaves) and not seeds. Asparagus fern produces fruits with seeds from a pollinated flower.
Hey Kaylee LOVE your videos! the Asparagus Plumosa "fern" is not a real fern is it closely related to the asparagus people eat. there are a few different variety that are commonly grown at least here in California. I agree the asparagus are super cool and one of the easiest "fern-like" plants.
People sleep on common houseplants, but all it takes is one 2-week vacation, a power outage in the middle of winter, or an unnoticed thrip, and these are the ones that will be left standing to sustain the collection. You'd be surprised how often I left my basic red anthurium dry.
