From www.kevincaron.com - Artist Kevin Caron runs through what you need to do to check out your new welder before the warranty runs out ....
A viewer, Mark, just ordered a brand new welder and wants to know the best way to really test the machine before the warranty expires, just to make sure the machine is going to last.
Kevin Caron is using an Everlast PowerARC 200ST stick welder (arc welder) and TIG welder to answer Mark's question. While it's not brand new, it probably has only about 2 hours on it.
When you first get your new welder, take it out of the box, and inspect everything. Look at the stinger, look at the ground, make sure the ground clamp is in good shape and not dented. Just generally inspect the machine to make sure there wasn't any sort of damage during shipping.
Then set it up. Get all of your cables hooked up the way they're supposed to be, turn the welder on, and let it run. Whatever kind of machine you bought, you need to go through all of the functions.
This Everlast welder is digital, so Kevin Caron shows how you need to go through all of the functions, both in 110 and 220. Make sure every button works. That's the only way you're going to make sure all the functions work. It also helps you to familarize yourself with the machine.
Then put on your safety and welding gear, and max out your welder. Turn it up to maximum amps, and do some welding. On this welder on the stick side, he'd use some 1/8 inch 7018 rod, which is a little warm at 120 amps on the 110 volt side of this machine, but it's not quite enough for some 3/32 rod. He's going to burn some 1/8 inch rod and then some 3/32 to push it a little.
And leave the welder running - for a few days! Let it sit idling. It's not using electricity like you're welding with it, but everything inside is now warm and up to temperature.
Every chance you get over the next month, burn some rod on the arc welding side. If it's a TIG welder, run some beads. If it's a MIG welder, just weld. Put some time on the machine at maximum amperage, both on the 110 volt side and the 220 side.
If anything's going to fail on the machine, it's going to happen pretty quickly. Get 5 pounds of rod, a chunk of steel plate, and make that stick welder sweat. Then run it hard on the TIG side, too.
If at the end of that month the welder is still welding, it's going to last you a long, long time.
Kevin Caron is ready to go back to work, so you have some time to visit www.kevincaron.com to see more how-to videos and his wild sculptures.
Well, you might want to stick around for another moment to see him wrestle a rod container ....

Kevin, great advice. I've been welding professionally for decades, and am still learning. Just got my AHP160ST "lunchbox" yesterday for home use- your vids helped me make that decision. Thanks for all you share.

I tested my everlast welder inadvertantly a few summers back. I wasn't keeping track of time and ended up doing a bunch of welding without stopping. It welded perfectly and the overheat never kicked in so I was pretty happy.

Great advice! Most circuit board failures happen in the first few hours of use. Leaving the welder on for a few days is similar hooking up a new pc motherboard to a power supply burning it in 48-72 hours before doing all the work of assembling the computer and then having it fail.

Thanks Kevin I just bought a AHP tig 200x and have have other things going on so your post could not have come at a better time. I work in the equipment repair field and can relate to what you say about today's electronic equipment. It seems that if it is going to fail it does so soon after install if it doesn't fail within the burn in it lasts a long time. You have got me off my butt and doing a stress test on my new toy. I must say that between you,Jody at welding tips and tricks and MR Tig at weld .com I have went from a novice stick and MIG welder to also a novice tig welder that can make a safe and secure weld in different operations. Maybe not the best looking,yet, but with good penetration on the root. Thanks

This is a good video. I need to stress test my everlast welders too. Coming up to 4 years now and never a problem but good to do a test before the warranty expires.

bought myself a new mig/mma/tig machine, I will max it out to test it. I did send my previous machine back because it welded to cold, even on max power. Only need to buy some argon gas and learn how to tig :D

thanks, I just bought a nes everlast ST 140 (partially thanks to your advice) and I was wondering if there was anything to do to test it out lol (i already did my first project with it and put around 15 hours on it) :) thanks again great video!

I don't understand how you say 120 amps is a little too much current for 1/8 rod, but not enough for 3/32. 3/32 is smaller than 1/8, thus requires less current.
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 5 лет назад
Just my expereance, when I run that much amperage on a 1/8th rod it tends to go up in flames.
@burntkat
@burntkat 5 лет назад
@@KevincaronSculpture Believe you may have misspoken, is all... To whit: 1/8 is 4/32. 4/32 is 33% larger than 3/32.. So you are saying running more current in a larger rod makes it go up in flames. This is at odds with literally every welding text I have seen, as well as common sense (larger electrodes take more energy to consume).
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 5 лет назад
Or maybe I just had a bad patch of rods. I don't stick weld very often so anything is possible.
@burntkat
@burntkat 5 лет назад
@@KevincaronSculpture I can't see a bad batch of rods defying the laws of physics. Electrodes have a specific resistivity per cubic centimeter, relating directly to their current needs to be melted. It's Ohms Law.

Great video Kevin! Do you have any videos dedicated to MIG welding gas blends and which one works for what? Had a debate the other day with a friend. He says straight CO2 is better. I use C25 mix. I said to him I might not be a pro, but I know someone who is (you!) and they'd know!
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 7 лет назад
Wow!! thank you! Have not done a video on the different gases. But you are correct, 75 /25 is the way to go. Have tried both and the co2 is just smoky compared to the mix gas.

Hi Kevin I just order a miller thunderbolt 160 my question is if I weld using 120v what happens if I turn the knob all the way up . Clearly I know that after 90amp it should be switched to 240v plug but what if I dont. what limits am I pushing? thank you
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 4 года назад
Well normally you get about half of max amps when you run on 110 volt instead of 220. So you should expect about 80 to 90 amps on 110 volt. Nothing bad will happen, you just won't get as much as you paid for.
@victornaja7927
@victornaja7927 4 года назад
@@KevincaronSculpture thank you kindly so maybe I'll wire my plug to 220 to make the most of my little thunderbolt.

How about connecting it to an old school load tester and seeing how well it holds voltage under load? www.samsclub.com/sams/100-amp-battery-tester/prod862835.ip
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 7 лет назад
That is actually done at the factory! They have a load bank in a climate room. They can dial up any temp and humidity and run them for hours to see how they handle the load under stress.

Hay kevin my welder only works if i lay the machine on its side in i have to turn my voltage seting all the way up if i try to turn it down it cuts off. Any ideals whats wrong with it
@KevincaronSculpture

Sounds like a loose connection inside. Pop the cover and look for loose nut or burned connection.

So my 350amp mig welder I would do the same ? I have never used more than 230amps ... need to get some 1" plate to weld on...

Hang on a sec. Somethings wrong with my machines ! No digital readout ! Not a single button ! Thank God the knobs are still there ! I think someone filled them with concrete though.Damn. All sorts of problems here ;-) HMmmm ? How come mine is so big and yours is so small ?
