With what I call the "Pump Kill-Switch", you can do a whole handful of profiles with a very clean and inexpensive modification, easily installed on espresso machines such as the Gaggia Classic and Rancilio Silvia.
What do you think? have you tried this before? how do you like it? Let me know!
↓PARTS↓
(Please note, in recent testing, I've eventually damaged this switch. I've recently switched to a new switch I list below):
Switch: www.amazon.com/dp/B08LD6T94X
~16" M/F Spade connector Cable
~16" F/F Spade connector Cable
~1" M/M Spade connector Cable

as I understand it the dimmer switch mod just reduces the amplitude of the waveform AC, and with a vibe pump it's really the duty cycles you need to control to directly control flow. so I'm really excited to look into doing this pump kill switch mod on my aging Lelit, as I've not been the happiest with it's pressure profile. Thanks for the great content !!

From someone who recently stopped professionally working as a espresso tech and now enjoys it as a hobby, you are honestly re-inspiring me to get deeper into the tinkering of machines. Hi Tate, I have just purchased something which by a direct translation would be one-phase motor rpm controller, that just modifies the sine wave that goes to a vibratory pump. Still have to mount it in my Profitec PRO 300 but was testing it with a spare pump an it works brilliantly! It's a full control (unlike dimmer switch mod) from 0 flow up to the full throttle. No drilling required. I don't know what current that regulator needs so I am going to use a SSR for activating the regulator and then the regulator will just run the pump with it's own voltage. Because it regulates the frequency of the AC in my pump you can run it slowly to have very low flow [dimmer mod just cut's the amplitude so the piston vibrates in a smaller range which usually is not very useful, now I can make it move slowly or quickly, from 0 to 50 Hz].
@saltrocklamp199
@saltrocklamp199 4 месяца назад
How did this turn out? Is it a PWM controller or something else?
@marcin.sobocinski
@marcin.sobocinski 4 месяца назад
@@saltrocklamp199 It works very, very well. I can regulate the flow from 0 to max. It's not perfect in the only sense that the regulation is not 100% linear. When you pass c.a. 2 ml/sec going down you have to turn the knob a bit more slowly as the gradient of flow change steepens. Otherwise I am very satisfied and am using it all the time. My regular workflow is, start pre-infusion with max pressure and flow for 2 seconds (puck saturation), then shut the flow almost completely (it's still soaking but very, very slowly), wait for 8 sec., then max flow again, wait for the pressure to start falling from max (e.g. puck degradation starts) and slowly rump down the pressure, cut off when desired ratio is reached. Effect in the cup: first of all less bitterness... and better balance. Second effect: you can "save" almost any shot, by just watching pressure. If it falls to quickly, just start ramping down earlier. As far as I know the controller itself is not a PWM (don't know if you can have that one for AC). It's called single phase speed controller (or frequency converter) for electric AC motors. There are very advance ones, with programmable functions etc. but the one I got is the simplest it could be with a switch to do a soft start 0-100 power. I use it for pre-infusion (it switches from max flow to controllable).

Hey Tate, another great video! Im also in the bay area, and am looking for my first espresso machine and grinder on craigslist. Any tips on finding a good deal, red flags to look for? Ive seen a lot of breville barista expresses for like 60% of retail price which seems like a deal, but unsure if I want to sacrifice the flexibility of upgrading the machine or grinder in the future. Price range is probably 700-800 for grinder+machine. seeing a handful of gaggias for ~300 used on craigslist so feel like that would probably be the move. thoughts on how to find a good deal and what to look out for? also, ID on your glasses brand?

Hi glad you enjoyed it! As a technician, I always recommend more machine grade equipment such as gaggia's or rancilio's due to their parts availability and repairability. Always be sure that the equipment has only used reasonably filtered water, but other than that, as long as you confirm all the functionality is there, I'd feel happy about it. The grinder is arguably more important than the machine, so I would be sure to account for paying nearly as much for the grinder. Good luck!

Also, I saw the pre-infusion not working well with it it’s just 6s. if there’s a way better for Silvia pro x to make it more than that also with pump pressure I think it will be amazing to modify. Your solution is really good but I’m thinking we can play on the PID function just to do something like a program or something to add more control to PID.

Could it be done with aj three position switch where one position of the switches would include a resistor or dim switch to decrease the power of the pump to 1/3 or 1/2 of capacity and other position to full throttle? That would give you ability to increase the preinfusion at set pressure similiar to a plumbing mains without having to flip switch all the time. Granted it would only work if there was such a switch available and compatible at the same time. Or am I delusional and there is a problem in the way that I do not see?
@tatemazer
@tatemazer Год назад
Yeah I wanted something like that. But that specific switch doesn't exist (at least without more wiring) and the brew switch on the Silvia is momentary, not latching. So you have to press it each time you start and stop the brewing process.

What about this VS opening the steam wand a little?. I find I can do that sometimes but it will drop the temp faster. I was also thinking of just hand pinching a hose to 'slow' some of the flow but unsure if that will cause damage. And I found turning off the stock pump usually kills my shot and makes zero crema so I do not do this anymore. In all in terms of puck consistency I found my silvia V3 with a IMS shower screen to have a uneven flow of water as the way the outlet is. Experimenting with how tight/loose the shower screen helps but yeah I found this to be the biggest issue the machine has (basically pushes water out more at one side vs another).
@tatemazer
@tatemazer 8 месяцев назад
Hi Good question! since the silvia pro has an independent steam boiler, it has no effect on the brew performance. but yes you can get a similar behavior with opening the steam boiler on a regular silvia. I imagine when you turn off the pump you are using the regular switch. note that this also closes the 3 way solenoid valve, which will unfortunately damage your puck
@liiich6175
@liiich6175 8 месяцев назад
@@tatemazer Yeah opening the steam wand makes an opening for the less resistance but I fear doing it daily would wear out my internal seals 2x as fast so I don't. I imagine turning the pump off cracked the puck because it always tasted like bin juice after. How does a proper PID do it, I might have to do this mod in the vid thats for sure. I don't have a PID but I installed a YH-902C thermometer and attracted the probe where the internal thermostat is...works real well for 1/10th of the cost. In the end I found a puck screen gives me the most even extraction (looking at left over coffee oils in basket after shot).
