Fantastic follow-up video, thank you! I used your first video to adjust my Miss Silvia. Mine is a V1, more than 20 years old and doesn't come with the adjustable OPV, which meant I had to add washers to relieve spring tension on the OPV spring. Here's a tip I learned the hard way: when taking the top screws out, leave the water lid on, just one one of the screws decides to try to jump down into the machine! Thanks again for making both of these videos! 👍👍

When you eliminate water leakage on the pressure gauge, your pressure will go up by 1 bar. You have now actually corrected your pressure to 10 bar, which is around 9 bar when you extract coffee

Adding that if you turn the nut with the attached hose; make sure your hose doesn't become twisted. Older hoses will be less flexible/brittle and may fracture.

Your video helped me repair my V2 2006 Miss Silvia. Rancilio Group had told me to purchase a new OPV. But with a cost of $100+, I went your route and now am not blowing hot air back into the tank and the shots taste much better. I should add that I cleaned all the parts within the OPV.......Thanks again. @@drinksunbear

Nice video. I have been trying to adjust the pressure in my machine using the OPV / timing method. For whatever reason every time i weigh the water i only get up to 80 ml, no matter how much I turn the valve. Any thoughts or suggestions? I am thinking i will buy the gauge and try that way.
@drinksunbear
@drinksunbear 2 года назад
The gauge is a great secondary way to check though it's still not completely accurate. I would say both methods can help you get to where you need.

Your pump might be worn out. Or more specifically, the ball in the valve might be worn.
@brizbgarcia1
@brizbgarcia1 2 месяца назад
Make sure your tube is not kinking as you adjust the OPV. Mine was too high and I was also getting stuck around 80 grams and it turns out the tube near the valve was twisting and restricting the flow. I pulled the tube from around the boiler and hung it over the front. I turned the tube for each turn of the OPV.

OK, so if I block off the flow in the portafilter I should measure about 130 mL of water in 30 seconds, which you are saying should result in about 9 bars of pressure, since I do not have a pressure gauge. thanks for the video

I followed your approach to checking the OPV valve on my 2022 Rancilio Silva. With my scale I did the 30 sec. test 4 times: avg flow was 94 grams so would I turn the valve adjustment clockwise to increase the grams to 120g?
@drinksunbear

@drinksunbear
@drinksunbear Год назад
Pretty sure it's counter clockwise for less bars of pressure and right if you need more pressure. Mine had too much and I dialed it back by going counter clockwise with the OPV
@davidsteckler9871
@davidsteckler9871 Год назад
I was trying to move away from bars of pressure as I don’t have a gauge to measure that so in 30 seconds the scale not d 94 grams of water in the beaker resting on the scale. I need to have approximately 120 grams of water in that 30 second period of time so…..loosening the lock nut on the OPV I would turn the outer valve nut counter clockwise to increase the flow of water to fill the beaker to 120 grams in 30 seconds?

Vance, he has the V6 Silvia with an adjustable OPV. If you have a V1, your OPV is fixed and not adjustable, but it can be modified to produce lower pressure.

Are you certain that you see "water" in the gauge? Many of them contain a liquid in order to prevent the needle from shaking, which is good in the case of the Silvia, that has a vibration pump.

which method is more reliable: pressure gauge on portafilter or 130gramm from OPV overflow tube? I have Silvia V3 and in 30 secs I got 147gr -> which points to about 8 bars of pressure (based on that picture from pidsilvia)...

Wondering why the leaks onto the drip tray while you run the pump? Surely this is your pressure gauge leaking, leading to inaccurate measurement? Would you not use a thin rubber washer to seal the pressure gauge to the portafilter?
@KennyBeers

I think it's leaking around the group head seal, probably because it doesn't have the basket in it. TBH that was not an accurate way of measuring the pressure, the portafilter needs to be completely filled with water to be accurate, any air in there will give a low reading because the air will compress.

The one sold by Espresso Parts in Seattle is cheaply made, and if you tighten it too much it will break (I've been there, so I know). Much better to make your own. Purchase a manometer that measures 0- 20 bars and is silicone filled. Then it's just a case of finding the correct female "sleeve". Note that the Rancilio portafilter has a male BPS (British Pipe Standard) 3/8" thread. Manometers for this application almost always have 1/4" threads. So the connector sleeve that you purchase should have a 1/4" female BPS thread on one end, and a 3/8" BPS female thread on the other end. My total expenses for the manometer and the sleeve were less than USD40.
