How to 'Think' in the Language You're Learning! 💡 

i’m a non native english speaker and at this point i think more in english than in my native language

So the "Me" in Talk to Me in Korean is really me. I should talk to myself in Korean

I learnt english, japanese, and korean with this method. This method is not just improving my understanding of korean, but it also gives me confidence 👍

a great video! as a beginner, to do this i have been making a habit of replacing my saying/thinking of common words with their 한국어 equivalent ( 네, 아니요, 감사합니다, 안녕, 뭐에요 ) all throughout the day so that when somebody asks me a something i just respond 네 맞아요 because it is what naturally comes to mind when i want to confirm what they said

I always talk to myself in korea. And I can tell you it definitely helps. Before sleeping, I after I brush my teeth and wash my face, I look at the mirror and say to myself “ 너무 예쁘다, 잘자😘” 😂😂

I have three jobs, get home at like 9pm and I still managed to learn the language so if I can do it, You can do it two!

I make up short stories starting with 5 verbs, a weekday, a color, and a favorite k-star. The funnier the better. I really look forward to this time as it grows in my imagination.

Perfect video I'm an intermediate and I'm so scared to start thinking in Korean because I might find out that I can't recall so many of the grammar principles I already learned :(

I really love the editing of this video with the little bars and divisions at the bottom so we can easily go to the parts of the video we want to!

Something I've been doing is translating a lyric a day from songs I listen to all the time. And look up vocabulary in the naver dictionary and any grammar points in that 1 lyric. Because I'm learning things in context and not just drilling long vocabulary lists, I remember them way more. And because song lyrics tend to have complex sentence structures with multiple clauses, I get exposed to more natural ways to express certain things. And I don't mean the topic of the songs, more how nouns, verbs, etc are connected together. Recognizing grammatical patterns helps me understand future text. Plus the fact that it's just 1 lyric a day makes it doable for me on a daily basis edit: I've been doing this for two and a half months, and can now understand most grammar from songs. I'm continuing to do this to reinforce the usage. It's gotten a lot easier to understand imagery, metaphors, emotion, and overall expression. Also, I've realized with the naver dictionary that lyricists love playing with the multiple meanings of words. (example 그리다 most frequently means to draw/paint, but occasionally can also mean to imagine, so knowing all possible meanings helps a lot)

Another tip that helps you with learning Korean is that you can take your diary or get a diary and start writing Korean in it - About your day, how you're feeling or anything really. And a fun activity for advanced learners is pretend you're making a Korean RU-vid video hahah. You can do this while cooking- talking about a recipe, doing your make up, Or if you're a crafty person, you can talk about the steps to making the craft

I remember Billy asked in Twitter what is the hardest part in learning Korean, and I said that, at the moment it is to speak what is in my mind comfortably because I still use my translating skill when speaking korean and end up getting confused even more and now here! Thank you, TTMIK! You always on time!

I’ve learned more Spanish than Korean and am working on improving my Korean. This video reminded me of something I used to do with my dad to help him learn a few basic words in Spanish. Every time we went to the grocery store I would say out loud the words I knew or I would say a short sentence. Eventually he would ask what I said; then he started to remember what the word or sentence meant. I’m proud to say he now knows a few words and phrases in Spanish now. So I’m applying this to Korean as I plan to put more energy towards learning more Korean.

I really enjoyed this! Korean is the 4th language I am learning and I can honestly say that translating never works when you are trying to become more fluent! In fact, I usually blank out when Italians ask me to translate in English, as I just speak it without thinking of my mother tongue anymore. Great advice 선생님

my french teacher (yes i'm learning french and korean at the same time leave me be)keeps telling us to "think in french" and i never quite knew what she meant. now i think i do

For the past 13 years, my source of entertainment has majorly made up of Korean content. I've learned the basics, etc., but never fully sat down to formally learn it. It's really interesting now that I've purchased TTMIK books and are sitting down and learning it I'm struggling with the thinking part. I would read something and understand and say it in Korean fine, but then when I pause and try to THINK about it, I get so much more confused. LOL It's very interesting doing this all "backwards."

Another great tip is instead of looking up a word and matching it to a word in your mother tongue, match it to a feeling. When you learn the word ‘사랑하다’ match it to the feeling of love and not the word love. Same with objects, when you learn the word ‘책상’ picture a desk and the feeling of using a desk and not just the English word for desk.

When i go back and watch 100% ttmik live lessons, korean just sticks to me and i keep talking to myself in korean. But bc I'm inconsistent, I don't do that regularly, so i also tend to lose that habit :/ But i really like how ttmik encourages us to improve our korean in the simplest ways possible 감사합니다 선생님😭💜

I think this happens when I watch korean. I understand what they say without translating it on my mind.

i try to only speak to my niece in korean when i’m babysitting her. she’s only 3 months old but it’s helping me a lot and she ALWAYS smiles when i say 안영 to her.

Very good tips in this lesson, 고맙습니다! As a multilingual person myself I would add this tip: don’t be afraid of or embarrassed about making mistakes. Many people who strive to learn a new language end up being inhibited by this mindset, perhaps because of the ingrained idea that failure is somehow shameful. You have to let go of this mindset and accept the fact that making mistakes is part of the journey, just as it is with learning anything new. 😅

This is super good help! I've known "thinking in the target language" to be one of the best ways, even THE best way to practice, but this video gives wonderful hints and methods. Thank you. A funny thing about my learning Korean: I'm a native English speaker, but know French and Spanish, and those words keep getting in the way!

I thought I new more but turns out I'm between beginner and intermediate 😆 anyway.... I learn words by writing it down as well.... You'll see random sentences and words in my college notebooks and the on the side of my notes...😆💜but I love this channel.

When I was learning English the way I made it a habit was doing while I was taking a shower. I would take a shower at the end of the day and I would try to imagine myself resuming my day to my friends in English. It was amazingly helpful. I'm trying doing the same with Korean but I don't have a big enough vocabulary yet, and I already have the habit of thinking in English in so many situations, when I try to consciously think in Korean, I would catch myself thinking in English without realizing when I changed language...

The funny thing is... I'm learning italian at school and korean by myself and sometimes i mix them up.... For example recently it happened to me in italian class... I wanted to say a word but I could just think of the korean word for it😂

The moment u just know about 20 words (well, I know about 60+, but I do just remember 20 all the time for sure) but you're trying this anyway 😂😉😥

I have noticed when I speak with a Korean accent in my mother's language English, that it helps my Korean pronunciation.

my first language is russian and i had learned english back when i was a teen exactly by this method without even realizing it. this method does work and it’s one of the best ways to learn a language

A family member of mine lived in Chile for a couple of years, so I asked him if when he spoke Spanish he thought about what he wanted to say in English first, then translated it to Spanish. He told me that he never thought in English while he was speaking Spanish. (Which was something I couldn't understand because I've only ever spoken English.) Then one day a short while ago, I was watching a different TTMIK video, and it suddenly made sense to me! I'm only an upper beginner and can only make a few sentences, but whenever I start making a sentence in Korean, my mind wants to keep going😃. Also, whenever I go to the store, I hope that someone will bump into me so I can start speaking in Korean to them🤣.

I met a child that was a mimic. Very young, but her speech was advanced for her age. I started mimicking the language I was in, and it help me both in the tongue and ear

When I learned English, I had English classes in school, so I learned it regularly. At home I used to watch movies and series in that language and look up words I didn't know. I remember making up scenarios in my head thinking in English. And it improved my English skills a lot. In Korean it's a lot harder for me, since I don't have the language around me as often as English. It's really hard setting up time frames to study, but it's my goal studying harder this coming year and this video is giving me the motivation I need!

Dude! I was already doing some of this stuff! I watch a lot of K-Dramas, so I was just incorporating a bunch of things I remember from the shows into my daily life. And I have been putting sticky notes all over my house with Hangul words on them. 🥰😍 I love that this video kind of backed up what I have been doing. Makes me happy. 😊

Yess I used to do this (and still do) when I was learning English. I can confirm it was one of the things that helped me the most to be fluent since I wasn’t able to talk with a native or live in an English speaking country. Thought I was too beginner to start doing this in Korean so thank you for the tips!!

Even though I had to pause actively learning korean this year (cos my work needed me to learn another language) watching TTMIK videos has still been so useful nonetheless

I really like when TTMIK gave this kind of tips of learning language. A few years ago I watched another video and followed their tips of writing a diary everyday when learning language. Thanks to that, my korean is really improved from only knowing basic statement like Thank You and Hello to I can watch korean movie/drama with korean subtitle (listening skill is still on progress) and seems like I’ll follow this tip too! Loved the aesthetics of this video, it seemed very welcoming. I grabbed my morning cup of coffee and settled in. I also really like how you added the time stamps and had the different sections displayed on the screen. Although I am (low-)intermediate I watched the entire video, but it is nice I could have skipped ahead if I was short on time. Onto the video itself, great tips. Especially the key that it is a "conscious" effort. But it will become natural overtime. I actually started to record a daily video diary every evening in Korean about a month ago. This has been really helpful in identifying missing vocabulary or grammar concepts for what I want to say, and learning how to talk around a concept I don't know how to express (yet!). It has also become a really integral part of my daily routine. I look forward to it as a way to get out my thoughts before I go to sleep. As always, thank you TTMIK for another great video.

Thank you so much for such an amazing and inspiring video! I don't know my level but i love speaking and i actually have been into Korean since 2016. I had to stop studying regularly in those times cuz of my busy schedule in collage but still i have been using basic Korean in my daily life at home. Even my mother can understand the basic words now! I've just graduated and decided to turn back improving my Korean. This video is actually about the things i've been using for a long time. I was literally using many of these methods while learning English back in time. Thus, this video inspired me once more to go on like that to improve my Korean skills! This is great advice! Everyday I walk to work and try to describe what I see out loud in Korean. Sometimes it is just naming things and other times whole sentences about what is happening around me. It is really helpful and gets easier over time. I actually just got the book My Daily Routine in Korean. I really needed this! I tend to try and translate but I always get confused and then it's too literal and not natural sounding. I try and think in Korean and sometimes I do it without thinking and I get confused but I am amazed. I haven't studied Korean in a minute but im still in the intermediate level but ill have to brush up and re-learn. Thank you for the tips!

Thank you for this! I think this really helps to be honest. I usually make a voice diary and try to say just anything that happened that day. Aside from that, I also make a written diary on my phone (just like what was suggested from one of your videos). I also usually give out korean commentaries while watching korean dramas or films hahaha. Like, on the spot reactions for a particular scene and in a way, it also helps.
