I have a lot of Korean friends but I’m scared to talk to them in korean bc they might thing I’m a kboo but I’m simply just wanna practice speaking. Thats the thing that stops me from learning, which is worrying about other people’s judgements. So I’m more confident when texting in korean with native speakers online more than speaking irl. Plus I get more time to think over if my sentence makes sense.
@oreosalsa

first you should know if you have Korean friends they would know you wouldn’t be a kboo. a kboo is someone who ACTS and WANTS to be korean 😐

Idgaf about this, i have one, just one Korean friend and she is really my friend, i talk and writing in korean every time, i just ask her sometimes if she like this or not, and ofc she don't care too if i speak english or korean, let it go, just do :)

You don't have to be afraid... They are your friends, so go ahead. If they are your friends they won't judge you. I'm German and I LOVE when people try to speak my language as it's a really complex language. Also most Koreans are really supportive when they realize that you can speak Korean. This is coming from an introvert so I know what I'm talking about haha.

This is a very late reply I know but have you learned it or continued learning it? If you haven’t, why are you learning it? Do you desire to be like a Korean? You can tell me the honest truth since I don’t actually know you LOL

Another thing I would add is to read out loud texts in Korean, even if you don't understand them completely. Maybe you won't feel you're developing your ability to quickly create sentences in your mind, but you slowly and unconsciously are learning how to build a sentence and learning grammar (while improving your pronunciation skills). I think any text would do the job, even if it's the subtitles of any TV show (the ones that randomly pop-up on the screen) or the lyrics to a song!

adrucast Yeah I agree with you, I do that all the time even tho my vocabulary is very basic.

Relatable. I started from learning 한글, to reading subtitles, and after 5 years I can understand Korean shows even without subtitles! I never make myself to-learn-korean notes or put myself under tight restrictions, I just somehow 'learnt' it.

You know Cassie, I speak Korean to myself every now and then but not as often as you suggest. That's a really good idea though! I especially like the part about evading the judgment of others (however I'm typically my own worst critic, so...yeah, that's fun). I'll give it a go. I can't wait to become as good at Korean as you are. It'll take a while but, I'm making good progress :)

Yes! It totally works. Sadly, cause I'm in school I haven't been doing much serious textbook and note-taking study that I actually like the best and did last summer vacation, so instead I ramble off in Korean about ... whatever! Whatever happened that day, how I'm feeling, reacting to thinks I watch on RU-vid.. in Korean! (my family probably thinks I'm crazy but whatever because) This has worked so well for me! I have recordings of myself speaking when I thought "my accent was all THAT!" at the very beginning of my speaking journey from last year, and I have recordings from in between and my year mark of studying and now it has improved so much. Far from perfect, but a native mistook me for being a native so I think that's good :))

That's awesome! I can't wait for the day that someone thinks I sound that good. Even if they just think I have Korean family or something, it'd be great! My Korean is better than my German is but I got mistaken as a German a few years ago while I was visiting Germany. It was a proud moment for me :D
@NANA.707
@NANA.707 6 лет назад
Wow! German too? That's amazing! I know German and English are obviously very connected but I cannot pronounce a lot of things in German but hope to learn it someday (probably just me that's struggling though huh?). The compound word aspect of it is so interesting. My mother tongue is Vietnamese (and technically Teochew Chinese but I cannot speak a lick) and I've taken Spanish for three years now in school...I don't know if it's the motivation that I have but I feel as if my Korean is better than my Spanish? Lol I hope that I could be mistaken as a native in Spanish too based on my accent and vocabulary. You can totally do it! Just keep practicing! (cliche but) 화이팅!

I always recommend this method to help people become more fluent in their secondary languages! I've done ever since I taught myself English, but by talking about language learning online, I found out that most people don't realize the importance of this, or even never considered it! I think this is one of the key elements to fluency and everyone should practice it. There are a lot of positives to learning this way. You need not worry about other people, you can do it anywhere, even if you have a dull couple minutes in whatever location. And it's fun! You can choose your own topics, or roleplay the situations you wish to practice! I really can't stress enough how important this is! Also you don't have to literally speak, just moving your mouth along is fine too, or even just keeping it completely in your mind does still help. Sadly I'm not able to practice this method much in Korean yet (need more knowledge.. rip) but I still do when I can, which also means having half Korean half English conversations in my mind, to fill in the void in my limited Korean knowledge. That way I'm still able to practice without needing anything except a tiny bit of time.

Absolutely loved this video! It's so refreshing to find content that's both informative and entertaining from a non native Korean speaker who's teaching through the same language learning process for us after going through it. Speaking of learning, if anyone's interested in diving deeper into Korean, I've been using apps like Ling and other online resource such as NHK Korean to expand my knowledge. They've been incredibly helpful in making learning accessible and fun. Keep up the great work with these videos-I'm already looking forward to the next one!

So many people expect that learning a language is full of complicated and magical strategies...but in reality we only need to apply simple hacks and dedicate time. Trial and error! Some hacks work and some don't. LOVE THIS SIMPLE TIPS, CASSIE! Mimicking do wonders for me...it proved to be effective with my English learning process and that's why I'm applying it to my Korean learning process. I'm going to commit with the Talk to Myself idea! :)

i also set any voice assistant programs to Korean, they are extremely forgiving of grammar mistakes, you can just shout keywords in any tense and it can usually understand you but it shows you in text exactly what letters you are speaking so you can correct pronunciation. its great for double consonants! it also improves your confidence when talking to actual people.

YES. 1) Shadowing and 2) self-regulation by talking to yourself helps a lot. In fact, I did shadowing for 6 months and skipped straight to Yonsei level 2 just by memorising the korean alphabet. I was watching kdramas for years without understanding korean but within that 6 months I picked up at least 1300 words. And that made learning grammar structures so much easier because I had a word bank. Whereas Japanese is still a conundrum because I don't have that word bank. I would add, 3) memorising short dialogues and 4)reading aloud (with friends if you get bored easily, like me) helps a lot too. Yonsei changed my perspective on rote learning because it sped up my reading SO FAST. 5) Find things to motivate you to keep learning. For me, the 2 things that kept me going is my personal appreciation in finding the logic behind how Korean works both technically and culturally and how it differs from my language. As well as my realisation that you really only need to understand 70% of what you're learning. So if there is 30% that I don't understand, I'll drop it and move on because I know I will get it as time passes or as I am exposed to more learning materials. Yonsei was 7 weeks a level. It was so fast and so difficult that I was a wreck most of the time. But the pace forced me to go up the levels quickly. And it helped me understand that there's no point in staying in one level for too long because you get stagnant and bored.

There are many apps on mobile where you can adjust speed of your music/podcast. I sometimes slow down the TTMIK stories to more easily follow along. Sometimes I increase the speed to 1.25 and try to follow along and always fail miserably, but then when I go back to normal speed it feels slow and much easier :)
@luuketaylor

That reminds me of a scene from Arrested Development where one character makes his brother do certain things and punches him in the stomach afterwards, then says "now next time when you do this and don't get punched, it'll feel better!" or something to that effect... 😂 But I get what you mean. Once you go back to normal speed after trying your hand at a fast listening session, things will suddenly seem that little bit easier.

I know this is an old video, but it really is important. To add to this tip, one thing that really helped me personally was to begin only studying Korean in places where I am alone, so that I can say everything out loud and repeat and shadow as much and as loudly as I can. It sounds dumb but it has made such a huge difference. I was even taking a Korean university class at one point, but I didn't improve much because I barely spoke outside of my classes, and I would only study in public places like the subway, cafes, and when my housemate was around. In hindsight I think I was subconsciously studying in these public places on purpose because I was still so embarrassed about speaking Korean in any form at all, and being in public gave me an excuse to not have to say anything out loud.

I swear, I am not an English native speaker, neither do I live in a English "native" speaking country, but this one tip really boosted my confidence to speak it and now I would say I can express myself properly in English. The same way I'm doing with my Korean learning, just don't give up!!!

I'm also a very shy person and the speaking to myself would be great except I'm never alone... I'm living in korea but always so busy so only chances of speaking I get are at the playgrounds with my children. There I meet other parents whom I can practice with but being that I'm shy I usually don't get much said. The speaking to myself thing could probably boost my confidence, but I'm not sure when I'll find the time. ㅠㅠ No matter what, this video was great and I need to hear these things even though it might sound obvious that you need to practice speaking to get better at it. I will try to push myself a bit further in my conversations with parents at the playgrounds and maybe I can find a few minutes a day atleast to record a few sentences of me speaking. I'll do my best!

I always felt that I won't be able to phrase a sentence or it would be hard, because I don't have someone to converse. I started learning hangul 2 years back and watched dramas and would talk in my sleep. But thank you so much Cassie for the tips I shall do those steps. Have a great day

I've been learning for four months. My writing is all right, my pronunciation is ok, but speaking off the top of my head.... oof. I have plenty of Korean knowledge, but when I have to think of sentences off the top of my head I suddenly forget all the vocab and grammar I spent hours learning :') however, I'll keep trying! To me, and whoever else is learning Korean, we can do it!

If you want to learn English, think in English. If you want to learn Korean, think in Korean. I'm a Filipino married to Korean. So I kind a think in Filipino, English and Korean. It's easier to make sentences when you use your target language to think when you're trying to speak it. It's hard at first but you'll be a pro in no time.

Korean is my fourth language and the shadowing step is SUPER important and actually more important in Korean than in Spanish and Portuguese. It’s important for all languages, though, I find myself having to focus on my mouth more than in my other languages. (Also probably because Spanish and Portuguese have latin roots like English so they weren’t that different). I just think once you have the mouthing movements, no matter what level you are, you are good and can learn a lot faster and quicker!

speaking to yourself at night before you go to sleep allows your brain to store the information and grammar in your brain more easily. i don’t really know how it works because i’m not a scientist, but you’ll be able to remember rules and vocabulary easier if you recite them to yourself before you sleep.

My Korean tutor makes me send audio messages when we can't have calls, or if I've sent something I've written asking if its right and she'll say it is, she'll then say "now speak it please". I always talk to myself in Korean when I'm studying but very quietly because if I'm out of the house, say like in Starbucks for example, I get people staring at me and I get really nervous >_
