How to Throw and Trim an Angular Lidded Jar - Narrated Version

This weeks pottery video shows how I throw and trim some simple angular lidded jars. They're thrown from a high iron stoneware clay and are quite simple to finish as each part acts as a chuck for the other, which I explain more in the video.

What I so appreciate about you is that you don’t ridicule other artists because they make different choices and use differing techniques than you use. Certainly, you acknowledge those differences at times, but you don’t call other artists “silly”,”lazy”, et al. I watch numerous artists, and am sometimes saddened by their comments about other artists whose style/techniques differ. Sometimes it is more telling of one’s character by what is left unsaid than by what is spoken. Kudos to you. Thank you for allowing us to have a view into your pottery world.

You can use pot-lifters, which slide underneath , then lift up.

I always tend to throw large feet deep enough to glaze. It leaves me an area of the piece where I can add a hidden customized message or image for those curious enough exam it thoroughly. That's my way of reminding the recipient it was hand made as much like you I get rid of my throw lines or hide them under glaze.

It’s not a bad decision to hide throw lines. They can produce a decorative feature. How a pot is made is an aesthetic decision. If throw lines were inside a bowl for instance, that would be undesirable. Imagine the bumpy ride of the spoon trying to scoop up soup!

Hi Florian! I think this is my first ever comment on a RU-vid video… Says a lot about how much I appreciate your videos. Just wanted to say that I really want to see a future lid-video. I’m a student of ceramics and I’m starting to understand how many different types of lids there are out there. Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive RU-vid video that explains the different styles or functions so if you would like to do that then I’m sure there are plenty of us who would appreciate it. Thank you so much for the work you put into making these videos! They are very helpful as well as relaxing.

There is a way to slightly dig in the corner of the 90 angle part of your flat rib, metal or wood etc. And bear in with the rib from the outside and slight finger pressure from the inside. Sort of like a 45 tool can tool off clay from the foot. This method stuff off a ledge. The gallery on a pot can also be thrown down this way. I have also seen a coil attached and thrown into place.

Thanks very much William. It's an ancient metal kidney, handmade by Kevin Millward in Stoke I believe. I've been using it for years now and can't remember how it actually got into my hands. Wonderful tool and apologies for not being more helpful.

Hello! This is a high iron stoneware clay body manufactured for reduction firing in a gas kiln, or at least, that's when it gives its best results.
