Little bit of thought!
This for me is quite hard to figure out (as an amateur disc golfer). Being all relaxed isn´t my jam and I overuse my arm I think. So getting the timing right and using the power pocket is something I need to work more on than just in a video like this. After recording I´ve started to focus more and more on the timing and I think there are even more in depth stuff that interest me about this. Like how to coil etc. Anyways with practice comes a wee bit better I hope 😂🤘

The best piece of advice I ever got was to get as loose and numb as you can, and then get looser. I started trying to become too loose, just to see how far I could take it before it ruined my shot, and that's when I started getting real power and snap off the disc

Definitely where I struggle the most, after almost 3 years, is trying to relax. My best shots are my slowest and most relaxed, but it is STILL totally counter intuitive. I try and focus on thinking of my hips rotating my shoulders and let my arm be as loose as possible, while still gripping the disc. Let’s get smooth and fast together everyone!🇸🇪🇨🇦

Saw a recent video from a finnish instructor who said "NO, PERKELE, DONT ROTATE, ONLY SHIFT WEIGHT TO FRONT LEG AND HIP" and it's actually a bunch easier. The rotation comes naturally and i dont have to think about it.

Something I remember Tristan Tanner saying went something like "trying to go faster never results in better" when you're trying to learn a new movement. Slow down until it's correct and you don't have to think to do it correctly.

The way I imagine it is like when you spin in an office chair and bring your legs in it speeds you up, and when you extend your legs the spinning slows down. Driving form is basically spinning in the chair 180 degrees. You start with your legs extended and then the power pocket is the speed gained from tucking everything in. Then you use the speed you gained from bringing your weight to center in the 'power pocket' and extend the arm, capturing the speed you made while tucked.

Don't throw full speed without weight in your hand. It can cause injury on tendons. Like a baseball pitcher uses a towel drill. Use a t shirt or hand towel it will snap as a bonus.

You guys absolutely hit it (with a nail?) with this one. 👍👍 But no matter how much you tell this to yourself (and other people) the slowing down and relaxing your arm part is not easy. Good luck for everybody in learning and also remembering this when throwing the disc. I've been learning this sport about 7 years and I'm still too fast with my hand waaaay too often.🙃

I’ve never been able to find someone to explain it this way. I always ask “am I supposed to try real hard with arm” but no one can really answer. So this was super helpful. Explaining it to be more like a slingshot and where to do that is helpful. You guys are my favorite disc golf RU-vid channel. Very entertaining and educational!
@mattsnyder4754
@mattsnyder4754 2 года назад
Yep. Your arm is actually one of the least “used” muscles. Hips are working hard. Torso and shoulders are rotating hard. The arm can basically just be a noodle outside of the little bit of muscle involved in actually “aiming”

holding your disc *really* loosely and going through the throwing motion like you do in your kitchen, then tightening your grip RIGHT at the end and letting the disc rip will help your body understand how to throw more relaxed.

Your timing is off by you trying too hard. Compare Johannes and you in slow motion. Johannes has much better reach back, you try to get to the throw too early, which makes your reach back much shorter. It's like his reach back "touches the back wall" before starting the throw, yours does not. So slow down and concentrate to extend the reach back all the way back.. and RELAX!!

You should try to take a larger last step. It looks like you are abbreviating your step into the plant. If you make that step a bit longer it will make a much more natural weight shift and make it easier for your hips to turn without forcing it.

a trick that has helped me be smooth is to throw the Champion max weight MAKO3 the reason is IF you throw this disc hard at all it will turn over and burn into the ground you basically have to throw it like youre trying to lay up a putter from 40 ft away very soft but let your run up and reach back add the distance not your strength so grab yourself a MAKO3 and try to smoothly throw it on flat angle nose down and it will GLIDE 275-300ft like a LAZER with zero fade and that tells you that you just threw it perfectly this disc is a form helping disc imo and i can throw my drivers with way more accuracy now!
@deadtigerworld
@deadtigerworld 2 года назад
Yeah, I met and played with a dude on the course that threw the Mako3 really well. I bought one and I feel like I'm turning it over a lot or burning it into a cut roller. It's 180 gram Champion plastic so I think that's max weight? I can't seem to throw it very well. I'll take it out to a field and give it a whirl. Good tip man.

I'm in the same boat as you. I can be fluid as you can, when we don't have a disc in our hand. We can let the arm be a whp and it looks great. Put a disc in our hand and we stiffen. up and that whip is really hard to obtain. So def in the same boat. Would like to know how to disconnect that stiffness when holding a disc firm.

I still have a long journey to work on form, it has helped me to imagine driving with my shoulder, not my arm or hand. If you time the drive with your shoulder, it should sync with the rest of the power your lower body is producing. Imagine a horizontal string pulling your shoulder forward after the reach back. Just be as relaxed as a puppet and slow it down if need be. I have trouble with trying to rip through the disc after the pull back and It’s throwing the whole sync process off. Gonna have to try some field work at 20% power and just try and get into that power pocket flow. Also be conscience of leaning to forward or back. A good visual of a a hoola hoop around you.

I am like you jonathan. Except I dont have muscles, or charisma. Everyone are saying the same thing, but you need to hear all the different ways to find one that clicks with you. I prefer that instead of "get disc to power-pocket then pull pull power-powah!", I like to think of it as accelerating, instead of power-pulling. my brain and body accepts that much better than power-pull. I also heard another thing the resonated a lot with me too. Imagine instead of holding a disc, you are holding a small stick with a little nail in it. Mentally hang the disc on the nail. Now throw. If you are too jerky, or aggresive the disc would simply fall off. If you dont accelerate smoothly, the disc will just wobble. if your wrist is all stiff, you will not be able to swing the small stick to get the most out of the throw. Its like the little chinese hand drums that you spin. Infact, maybe this could make for a good fun video? Trying out peoples wierd suggestions ;)

I think something that may help is to think you're not actually pushing and pulling your hand/disc. You're rotating your shoulders on axis. So more power means rotating the shoulders more before rotating them back. Your hand is a trebuchet. The further you push the spring down, (Rotating your shoulders back) the farther you can project the rock (the faster your can rotate and snap the disc out of you hsnd)

There was improvement between throws. More follow thru, and your head position. May I suggest, more bend in the knees in the lower body, think about dropping the front shoulder, and let the hips start the flow of energy , as Johannes said the arm follows the base. Snap a towel, it is not strentgh but smooth speed that makes it WHIP.

The amateur guy is too tense and stiff. He needs to practice with no disc in his hand, letting himself feel the 'whip' motion in his arm. With no disc, good players can still make a snap/whoosh sound with their arm, just by letting it go loose and using their lower body to create a whip. The amateur's arm is too tense to ever make this whip.

This works super well for me: During the run up, keep the x-step small and fast, then there’s a delay, and then you plant step. This extra half second that you buy yourself allows you to do some key things: lets all your joints catch up and hover in the right position, allows you to check your aim is true, and most importantly… RELAX. This way, as soon as your plant foot touches the ground you’re already positioned to snap everything forward

Then once I realized I hit a zone in round where I was better using my front shoulder and plant foot as my timer but my back arm activated the same it all clicked. I think the back arm focus is the key and once you click you can time the front arm cause the body learns to rotate. It is not a quick thing to learn.

Probably one of my biggest problems. My power is massively lacking and I always blame it on being a tiny person. I'll practice this and see how far it takes me lol

I recently started working on this as I would muscle the disc, just loosening up my body and using more hips in a standing position I was throwing my mids 25" further the very first day lol. I got a lot of work to do as its now messed up my 3 step timing/speed but I think I'll finally be driving with mids vs fairways to get even more accuracy

I think the difficult thing for myself is strong grip but relaxed arm.

Awesome video my man. I feel like I'm in the same boat as you are. Im starting my disc golf journey and I'm hooked and learning and developing my swing. So I feel everything you're going through. Some days it feels like it's coming together and some days not so much but I love your videos man and just watching the progression is awesome! Keep up the great content!
