Chironomid larva or bloodworm are a bread-and-butter stillwater food source, as they are available throughout the season. Presented properly, trout seldom refuse a bloodworm pattern. Presented just above the bottom, the majority of the time, bloodworm patterns such as my Fork-Tailed Devil.
Featuring a Tungsten Head Turner bead, you have the option of presenting the Fork-Tailed Devil horizontally under an indicator if you use a clinch or improved clinch knot. If you use a non-slip loop knot, you can also present this fly using cast and retrieve techniques with a floating line, Midge Tip or slow sinking line such as RIO's Hover.
Still around until the end of the video, where I demonstrate how I set up this fly to suspend horizontally.

Hi Brian, this would be a good pattern to try through the ice. Other good patterns of mine people have used include balanced leeches, scuds, and Blobs. Cheers, Phil

Very cool, kind of like an Apps Worm but more versatile.

Thanks Ryan, I am glad you enjoyed my tying video. The Apps worm is a great pattern and I had some good success with it last season. Perhaps I should feature the version I use most often on my channel at some point? Cheers, Phil

this fly looks like it would catch blue gills and sun fish till your you got tired of catching fish! it also might work wonders on some brook trout in streams that really get hammered and pounded from the tourists all summer,,, thank you for the tips

Thanks, I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed my video. This fly would work on a variety of species other than trout. Many of the flies on my channel fall into this category. Cheers, Phil

These head turner bead flies look very interesting. I've been a long-time fan of your balanced leech pattern, so a Llama order seems imminent. I wonder how these might perform in slow & deep moving water 🤔 I have a few places in mind to give em a try

Hi Jason, Thanks for your kind words regarding my balanced leeches. Head Turner beads are indeed an interesting product. They should perform well in a variety of presentation situations. They can be used on a variety of hook styles allowing you to present files traditional and in a balanced configuration depending on which knot you use to attach the fly. Cheers, Phil

You did a segment on the show the new fly fisher a while back called dragon fly nymphs for fly fishing and you mentioned a bug called “Butlers Bug” I was just wondering if you’d do a video on how to tie it please and thank you. It looks like it would be a very good fly in my neck of the woods!
