Hi john, just wanted to thank you for you knowledge on this method. This past weekend I tied and tried this rig for the first time on the eastern shore of Virginia and within jigging it 3 minutes the first flounder I caught was 20.5 inches. Went on to have a very successful trip. Thanks brother and tight lines.

Adam Beaty I was at Rudee last week, didn't try his methods, but now I want too. I've read that too many blues in Rudee though are scaring off the flounder. I'm still going to go buy some bucktails though and Gulp

I used this rig today, June 25, 2016, at a certain north shore bay, from a pier. I used a 3/4 oz bucktail with a white head and a chartreuse "body" topped with a spearing. I used a Gulp 3" chartreuse swimming minnow teaser on a #4 circle hook. I was there 15 minutes bouncing and retrieving the rig all up and down the pier when I caught an 18.5" fluke. Everyone else who was there didn't catch a thing. Your technique rocks, John!!!!!

"5/0" doesn't mean much without knowing the hook manufacturer and style. I believe SPRO uses Gamakatsu 604 5/0 hooks in their 3/4-ounce jigs. It's what I use in mine. When SPRO hits 1-ounce, they have heavy duty hooks that I don't like for fluke.

Excellent instructional video! I fish for Largemouth Bass here in Central Florida in the Harris Chain of Lakes, mostly. I often use lipless crankbaits. Sometimes I use a snap to attach the bait. Sometimes I tie directly. I like the way you loop and attach the bottom lure. As you say, makes it easy to change lures. But, the loop has to be large enough to pass over the bait and the two sets of trebles, which may result in additional weed gathering, which is bad. I'll try, thought. Thanks.

John I used this set up, although I could’ve probably improved the dropper loop but I hooked 5 flounder (1 keeper) off the surf in LBI. They only ever went for the top lure (bare hook + gulp) but I’m sure as you go deeper the buck tail comes more into play

@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 10 лет назад
You're going to want calmish surf. Then you can still use 3/4- 1-ounce. On most ocean beaches you won't be casting into very deep water from the shore with this rig, so a light weight jig will still work.

I completely agree with your one point: I hate fishing where there are lots of people around. I'd rather catch a few less fish (which generally never happens) and be out there alone. The ocean is big, and there are a lot of fish...never saw the point of swarming up on a specific spot, except for some very specific situations.

Hey John, When fishing off a kayak have you found an easy way to switch gears to fishing for other fish species. I was outside of Porpoise Channel this weekend fishing for fluke off my kayak with moderate success. The fluke bite started to fall off, but I noticed that there were stripers splashing around in the water all around me. They weren't hitting the fluke rig that you suggested, so I rushed to shore to tie a standard fluoro leader with a snap so I could switch lures with greater ease. Ideally I'd bring two rods with two seperate setups, but I can't afford that at the moment. Thanks, I appreciate what you do!
