Someone skyrocket this youtuber. During these trying times of covid, water activities where it's one or two people per vessel, be the vessel motorized or not, tips and tricks from people this this youtuber are of the utmost importance for teaching people how to entertain themselves outdoors.
Man!! I spent an hour trying to do this this morning and after thus video my misses doubts my manhood. Thanks and a few plus cuss words for showing me up.
I see a lot of people asking about longer trips on the freeways and highways. Instead of wrapping around the lower part of the hook, go the whole way to the crossbar. For the longer trips, most J hook sets come with tie down for the bow and stern of your kayak. An extra ratchet strap over the top on connected to the crossbars on those long voyages too never hurt anyone. If your driving hours to your location, taking off an extra strap or two off shouldn't be a big deal upon arrival.
Just bought my 1st kayak this past weekend. Planning on taking it out on the water this coming weekend. Though I'm no dummy, I actually tied mine on improperly the first time. It didn't fall off, but it did shift while driving, and actually dented the kayak slightly. I found this short clip very helpful. Thank you for sharing. I hate relying on the internet to learn how to do things, but it certainly is very helpful. Thanks again. Maybe you could share some tricks and tips for kayaking for beginners. Maybe just some lesser known things that might be very helpful. Thanks again. Tim
Thank you. Just installed the J-hooks. Came with straps, 10 ft. Wanted me to run them through the car. (Smirking) watched your video. Thank you makes more since. I would like to tecommand going around crossbar should J-hooks get loose. Thanks again - Bryan, Salem, OR
I’ve just come to the conclusion that I’m going to use the straps and strap to the crossbar like everyone’s saying. And use some extra straps I have at home
Same….. NOT on that bottom “loop” of the J-Hook, you have to go UNDER you cross bars, just trying to help anyone that’s not familiar, repeat…. Don’t strap it like that, most J-hooks are pretty weak unless you have Thule / Yakima / Top shelf equipment. Even with those they advise the whole “under bar” thing clearly.
It looks like you added some nuts on the bolt between the hand tighten nut and the metal piece that goes under the cross bar. am I right? I thought about doing this. My J hooks cannot tighten to my cross bar because the hand nut starts to contact the piece of metal that does under the cross bar.
We don't see much movement with this on ours. I take mine down the freeway on shorter trips this way. If you are going long distances, I would think about tying down the ends as well. I have taken them on several hour drives this way with not tying down the ends and have not had any problems. But, more safety is never a bad thing.
I couldn't agree more with David's statement. Maybe a heavier duty strap and you should be fine. If you really wanted to, you could add bungees or straps to front and back tied to bumpers or something. But I've never had issues with the way I showed
Most straps are not long enough to go all the way around. The way I'm showing on here is how our j-hooks(as well as most j-hooks) are intented to be used. Check with your manufacturers instructions though.
We use just the straps and have never had a problem. We take them in long trips too. More tie downs is a good safety measure I guess, but we've never seen the need
If your kayaks are not tapered at the front and back the kayaks can shift frontward or back. This means they should be anchored at the front and back too. Mine don't have a good way to anchor in the front or back.
@@drapermiketapered to a point at the front and back. Middle section is wider. He’s saying if your kayak is the same width the entire length to tie down the front and back so it can’t slide either way.
There is absolutely NO WAY I’d tie my board down like this. First of all, my boats are too bit. Second of all the boats are not secluded to the car. Just the hooks and what if (I know it’s a small chance) the hooks fail? Now your boats are on the highway possibly causing an accident.
Your straps are too short. They should go through the cross bar of the roof rack. Not attached to the J hook. You should take this video down, and redo it.
I'm not a 100% sure but I think he's trying to address how to use the straps that you are given with the from the manufacturer. And good point, it does seem to be enough strap to also go under the rack.
Need to have longer straps and to wrap around the roof rack then back up to the cinch point never rely just on the jrack especially one with hand tightened keepers…even nylon nut ones I still wouldn’t trust 100% it can always vibrate loose
