Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. As for the traditional knot positions, I remember coming across similar information. That said, I don't specify to my students which hip the sash be knotted on. I let them where the knot on whichever side is most comfortable. I use the sashes for my kid programs to denote rank and give them something tangible to measure their progress with. I don't use sashes for my adult students. We have a level system and they receive certificates of rank. I created this video for my students and their parents so they can learn to tie their sashes.

Truthfully, I never wore a sash in any of the schools I trained in either. I use them now in my school to demonstrate rank among my students. I started out just using them for the kids as a way to motivate them, and to invoke an attitude of focus, respect, and discipline. It's amazing what certain small things like a sash, or bowing on and off the mat, can do for one's attitude and perspective. When my adult students asked for sashes I was actually resistant at first. I had always felt that rank was unnecessary - you're as good as you are today, and you train to get better. Ultimately, I gave in and applied the ranking system to my adult students as well 😅. I made the sash tying video because so many of the parents of my young students were having trouble tying them. I have heard claims that the sash works as a sort of stomach girdle - or brase - to stabilize the core...but I'd just as soon strengthen my core.
