What a fantastic interveiw. To the point and good questions asked. Most probably one of the best interviews I've seen on Akitas. A must watch video for anyone thinking about or wanting to own this noble, often misunderstood breed. As someone who has owned akitas (both types) since the late 90's I'd like to say that there is so much conflicting information written and talked about these dogs and this lady is a breath of fresh air. I agree with everything she says. They are complex, no nonsense dogs who need serious training and knowledgeable owners. To the owner who understands and properly cares for these dogs their loyalty is without question, but in the wrong hands they are a ticking timebomb and downright dangerous. One thing I would like to add... please if you are thinking of getting a dog, any dog, only own a dog if you can truly devote the time and energy needed to give that dog the best life it can have.. they live short lives and deserve much than the way we humans presently treat them.

I enjoy your information very much but I always rescue and of course rescue dogs are almost never puppies. It would be very helpful in my opinion if you did some videos about that. I've had both Japanese and American Akitas, they both have been horribly abused but we made it through and they were fine dogs. I had to be very careful with them around others, animals and people too. I intend to continue them and I hope you'll do some videos about. Thank you for all you do!
I own the rare unicorn/golden Akita. She LOVES people, children, other and dogs. She seeks out hugs and attention. Our vet was even shocked that as she got older her personality stayed the same. Her breeder breeds for temperament and began socialization at day one. We continued scocializing her daily. She is actually so friendly that we worry when people ask us about her and where we got her. We are always sure to let them know her personality is very atypical for her breed.
Mine is also very calm and loves other people and dogs except not nutured males. He however is not a big cuddler, he doesn't mind it but he seldomly would come up to you asking for hugs. And I also tell everyone that they are difficult and require a lot of time and training as well as strong personality from the owner, otherwise they would not turn so nice and calm and accepting. With other words you must have done something right with your Akita.
Yes!! I managed to get the first pick of the different temperaments from the very last litter my small breeder intends to do; and she is exactly like this so far. Still a pup so fingers crossed; but overall aside from mistrusting people who come rushing at us or walk into the house unannounced, she’s so incredibly sweet and loving and cuddly!
Every time I watch another Akita video before and after getting my puppy, I am reminded how incredibly similar our personalities are and solidify further why I deliberately chose her 🥰 Thank you for always being so honest about the Akita path! Having searchable resources like this that don’t sugar coat it is honestly so needed for the ignorance that generally comes surrounding this breed.
I have an Akita, he’s now a little over a year. We got an second dog when he was about 10months. It was a 2month old standard poodle. Introducing them took weeks. We kept them separate for a couple days. It was a really slow process, but so very worth it. I can relate to the part where they act like brothers and tussle a lot. The poodle is very vocal so It’s easy to detect and stop it right away when They’re being too rough. The Akita is super protective of the poodle. When they know they did something bad he’ll stand in front of the poodle to try and protect him. I personally think getting another dog for my Akita was the best decision for him. He feels the need to protect all of us and the other one is okay with it. He loves to be the baby.
The energy in that house must be crazy. Do you have cats. I never had a poodle before. I just got my 3rd akita. We also have 2 german sheperds and 5 cats.
@@christinafisher6169 yes I have two! I have one who I’ve had before the Akita for about 6 years already. He doesn’t really like the dogs. I got a kitten and she’s In love with both of them. Again the introduction was a very slow process but we’re a big happy family
We had an akita/border collie/poodle mix -really smart dog, independent, family oriented. She chase geese off the lawn far enough so they would not just land nearby, never trained her to do that. She'd heel off leash bike riding... a bit spikey at times but a wonderful girl.
One of the reasons we can't get a second dog is exactly how protective my Akita is of his friends. Going on a walk and he is minding his business not carrying about the other dog passing but if his friend says I don't like the other one my jumps on the spot. It would be impossible to walk them together on my own. I do it with his Shiba Inu friend but just because the little one is easy to be hold in check due to her size. With his Husky friends it would be a pure nightmare
Thank you for this i just recently got an akita puppy and I’m noticing he loves throwing his one paw up to play with dogs and i thought it was something cute, but now that she explained it i will put a stop to it cuz i do want him to be socialized and good with playing with other dogs!!

I know this video is a little older. But I recently found out that my "pitbull" puppy is actually a pitbull/American akita mix. She is sweet and yet one of the most stubborn puppies I have ever had. This video has helped a lot with seeing the psychology of this breed. When I rescued her, she was 10 weeks old. So, fingers crossed I can keep her and be able to get the "out" downpact.
I've been around a lot of Akita's for many years and have been in Akita Rescue since 2009. This is a very informative and accurate conversation. She's absolutely right that it's a hands on learning curve. No book or lecture can really cover it. Akita's definitely aren't a dog for everyone. As a rescue, I've turned down a lot of applicants that weren't right. I'm sad to say that We can't save all the dogs that need to be saved.
What she says about Akitas and kids is interesting, and perplexing, because it has long been written that Japanese parents famously went to work leaving their children 'in the care' of their Akitas!
My last Akita didn't like strange dogs, was food aggressive, and protective, but got along with our male german sheperd. Our new Akita likes all other dogs so far. We did the meet and greet twice with our foster German sheperd; they are both female. We now get to keep the sheperd and they are beasties. Unfortunately, we lost our male german sheperd in the process.
I really appreciate your videos, they're super insightful and respectful of the needs of the dogs themselves. I've always wanted a dog and I would love an akita, but like Barbara Jean says, it wouldn't fit my lifestyle now. I have to respect that that would just cause problems for both me and the dog and ultimately would make us unhappy. In 15 years I'll be in a different position and can always reconsider 😊 thanks!

I loved this except for the kid segment. Ive had two big male Akitas and also have 4 kids. 3-10 years old. Both have done good with the kids, now do they sit and play with the kids, no but they both have tolerated the craziness and usually just walk to another part of the house when the kids yell and run around. Both have also been very protective over the kids when we go on walks. Its all on letting your kids understand the boundaries when it comes to the dog and also letting the dog know how to be with kids. Everything else was absolutely perfect though!

it really depends on the relationship with the dog and boundries. If it understands its not his couch its yours and sitting on it is a privilege ok. If he thinks its his couch and tries to claim it as his its probably not a good idea.
Much depends on the child. I grew up on a farm. Not only was I training dogs (on my own) by the time I was 7, when I was 11 my horse trader grandpa gave me the last of his stock (a Shetland with a bad reputation for biting children, and a half blind QH/Percheron undescended stallion) and I trained them. (That was a crazy story involving the Shetland and me disobeying a direct order from Grandma...) The pup I have now, a mutt that I suspect more and more is part Akita (especially as he is maturing, the body is definitely Akita like, even if the hair and head are more GSD like, and momma was a Sheltie...), would have been a great farm dog. Most of what I am having to train him for is just manners for in town, and that's mostly just to walk on a leash and to be gentle with the cats. (Play dates with his litter mate is... Utter chaos though. At least that one acts more like a Sheltie... Until his brother shows up. The other person, unfortunately, thinks she knows all about training dogs because she's had Chihuahuas all her life... Eeeeyyyyeeeaàahhhhh... That's... complicated...)
Amazing interview! I am thinking of getting an Akita, but I already have a 10 year old female Australian Shepherd and three cats, the youngest of which is almost 9 years old. So, a team that has been together for a long time and gets along very well. Not sure how an 8 week old male Akita will fit in with them. I've been with dogs all my life, but I think this will be a special challenge. I am personally ready for such a challenge, but many claim that Akitas have a hard time getting used to other dogs, especially cats. So I'm not sure if he will guard them or kill them all, when he grow up :( What do you think? That's a question for everyone who has commented here, especially Akita owners. It would help me a lot in my final decision. Тhanks a lot.
Tough to say. Growing up with the other animals should help him accept them, but the cats running away could trigger the Akita's prey drive and he could go into instinct mode. If you do get the Akita, I wouldn't leave it alone with the cats.
I would absolutely NOT recommend introducing an Akita into an environment with cats. Their prey drive will turn your everyday loving and friendly Akita into the primitive breed they are, which is territorial and natural hunters. There are soooo many stories of Akita owners who had them with cats for years then came home to carcasses because their dog's prey drive was triggered. If you've never been around an Akita when their prey drive is active, I would recommend you find a friend or owner who will allow you to go with them on a walk in an area with known wildlife and see how their dog transforms. The female and male mixture of dogs is less of an issue, but tolerances and behavior would have to be watched and I would not leave them alone together for a long, long time. Akitas are not "dogs," in the traditional sense and their behavior is indicative of us this.
We have an Akita/Poodle mix. Aye Carumba. She is now three years old. She will only eat once a week, and then only when hand-fed Arby's Roast Beef Sandwiches. (Yes we have tried to outlast her, but she went for two weeks without eating.) She is NOT treat driven-could care less. She does NOT answer to her name, she totally ignores everyone. She runs from us when we try to give her treats. She is an excellent watchdog, however and was housebroken in a week. She is totally indifferent to all humans. We have just accepted her as a dog with "special disabilities".
The only thing I disagree with is at 38:00 she talks about body language and aggression. Akitas have an incredible poker face and it is is *almost* impossible for an every day owner (not a trained professional) to pick up on "unpredictable, dangerous, out of the blue for no reason" behaviors.
I have a Japanese akita x Keeshong mix, let me tell you she is absolutely right, loves cheeks scratches hates pets, loves the floor more than his 200$ bed and definitely... wait... no, he cannot even spend 5 minutes away from me or he howls... But I made sure from day one to teach him he sits, and waits for food, also helped him learn the command itself much sooner than with treats.
My Akita was put into doggy day care at 10 weeks recently removed her from the day care. Like you said it's just a bunch of inexperienced people watching them. I continued to take her to the dog park every day 3 times a day. Lately she's been getting more dominant/ aggressive with the dog at the park. Even the ones she's been playing and getting along with for the past 4 months. I'll grab her and make her sit till she's calm but once they get up to her tail she gets dominant again. Eventually I'll just leave the park
Yeah dog parks can be just as bad if not worse than doggy day care. Akitas typically have a pretty big attitude shift around 10-12 months. They can be very sweet as puppies, but turn out to be very aggressive adults.
If you go to a dog park, or have a meet and greet, you might consider taking a few extra moments to do some rigorous activity first. For example, a moderate walk or some rigorous play with you first to take the edge off. I have found the meetings go better when my girls had a little bit of exercise and she's not all keyed up and full of it 🌞🐕. We often walk around the park first or walk all the way to the park from our house 3+miles, so she can burn off some of the energy and be a little bit more chilled out by the time she's ready to go play with the other doggies. I also let her check out the dogs who are at the park before I bring her into the fenced area. if it seems like there's some doggies who seem like they're not going to be very nice match and they and their owners are not managing them very well,. they seem poorly socialized and lack manners, we just put the dog park play off till a later time.
The first time I ever saw an Akita believe or not was in Corpus Christi, Texas, it was love at first sight he hade this huge head and paws and looked so majestic. I have some questions for Akita owners I have owned the Mastiff breed my whole life and am considering making a change the question I have is shedding a big a problem as some people say? I mean all dogs shed but just wondering if it's a major problem or just another thing of what all dogs do just slightly more. The other question is I live in Texas which is a reason I never got one as I always thought it might be cruel to have a Cold weather dog in Hot weather environment so can they have a happy life in Texas? Definitely want my dog to be happy and just doing the research before I make a purchase the two breeds I have decided on are the Akita and Doberman
That was truly a good interview. Very insightful and knowledgeable. Only thing I disagree with and this is coming from my own personal experience with an American Akita. My boys name was Hanz. I was young when my father got him on impulse from a dammed pet store in upstate NY. He ended up having parvo and a rare "apparently" disease that came from ancient Japan. Not sure that's what I was told as a kid. He survived the parvo but would get flair ups where his nose pigment and skin would flake off. Besides that he was the most loving and affectionate dog I've ever come across. No real training other than me and my old man playing with him throwing balls and normal shit like sit and stay lol. He was not aggressive towards other dogs or people he didn't know. He damn sure stood his ground but never aggressive he just made sure people knew he was there and not putting up with anything. All in all he was so chill and loved getting hugged and attention. Maybe we got lucky but still to this day I miss my big boy and he unfortunately had to be put down in like 98 due to age and a lot of health issues. Ever since then I've been wanting to get another Akita but where I am there's no reputable breeders I can find. Love yall and sorry for rambling.
Do you ever find that your Akita knows when you have treats and performs well during training, but then also knows when you don’t have treats, and doesn’t behave as well, (if at all)?

I would not say “feral”. Japanese Akita are more “Aloof”. They’re more “Japanesy”. I love the St. Bernard genes left over in the American Akita, the thick fluffy legs are the best.
We are in the beginning phase of looking for either an Akita (me) Shiba (Wife) so most likely we'll get a Hokkaido 😁. Our issue is looking for a Good Breeder. We are looking at AKC Breeds but so far haven't found a Breeder that doesn't give the puppy mill $$$$ vibe. Any recommendation on things to look out for?
I walk a 3 year old Akita on lead as lack of train but also due to him not liking some other dogs, he met my lab and was walking fine with him for a few months then one day they snapped at each other I got lightly bitten by the Akita nothing major (I was trying to separate the bite wasn’t intended for me) but had to go back to solo walks it’s been a few months since and maybe once every couple of weeks me, my lab, the Akita and another person do a walk together so far all good but I’m not willing to believe I could walk both by myself again yet. Not sure if I’m going about it the right way or if I should go back to both walked separately
Interesting to hear her opinion on Japanese Akitas being less affectionate. I had watched another video of someone who owned a couple of Japanese Akitas and he stated they were typically more affectionate and wanted to 'cuddle' more than the American counterpart.
i just got a american akita and it’s 6 months but i have no idea where to start i’ve had dogs before but she was free and just unplanned but i’m not complaining just confused
I will say that the portion about “always needing a high value reward” isn’t correct…you slowly extinguish the treat for other reinforcers…and if the behavior has appropriately been shaped other reinforcers will be as effective. I have 3akitas and a husky/akita mix that live in the house…and a Pyrenees outside…never had an issue with training or behavioural issues in the 25 years I’ve had akitas. Start only with good genetics and then follow up with good training and they’re wonderful.
What I find is crazy is they say there very possessive but I have a 11 week old American Akita as well as a 7 year old pit bull and 2 year old German Shepard . They all get along fine and eat together with no problem. Other than him being a puppy he’s over all great with my older mixes of dogs
@johnnycash8366 I guess it depends on your definition of "bad", but that's when the true Akita personality typically shows up. They become more protective of the home, less tolerant of other dogs and people. There are always exceptions to the rule, but you won't know until your Akita is an adult. Training should always be done regardless of breed or age, so definitely start now!

I'm just curious how differently the Akita and my other experiences are? I've got 20 years of ex fight dog rehab. But I know they are a cake walk compared to puppies
I understand the training of your akita around other dogs the true fact is When dogs figure out who is the alpha they almost all the time get along great. But we don't like to see that 30 seconds or one minute of that happening.

monster is an understatement they are controlling, possessive, very protective and they get even with you and will chew up the whole house. but you have to show them who is boss they will kill other dogs if you're not careful being raised with other animals they will become adaptive.
That's NOT how positive training works. That guy is wrong. He didnt mention that positive training also INCLUDES distance, BELOW threshold, No distractions to start. You BUILD on the successes. His comment is very misleading about positive training techniques.
I disagree - there are positive reinforcement ways to train a dog in anyway that one can through force and fear. Force and fear can cause increased aggression; it stresses the dog and can lead to poor health; negative reinforcement damages bond and trust; tools have been banned in many countries for good reasons.
Erm 😐 negative reinforcement is anything that increases a behavior that you want. If done properly there is no reason that it should damage trust or bonding. I’m guessing you don’t understand psychological learning principles very well based on this comment-because even positive reinforcement that you notated makes no sense.

ECollar, for example, can be used as a form of positive punishment or negative reinforcement. The point is if you are causing fear and pain you are killing bond and are a POS as well. Anything that can be taught that way can be taught without.
Well, your video is so negative that the two young Akitas (1 male & 1 female) in our pound will certainly get the death penalty! We were going to go back tomorrow and walk them together. We were hoping to adopt both of them. We aren’t novice dog owners, it’s just been a healing time after our old dogs went to heaven. Because of this video we aren’t going and their time in the shelter is up! Is this a thanks???
The lady knows the know with Akitas. The day anyone gets anyone gets any Akita is the day training starts. Hands on all the time. When you walk them you have to be aware of what your dog is doing. I have had three Akitas in my life and I trained them all. Akitas are very smart but will try you at anytime and communication is key with them. If you are not willing work this is not the dog for you.
Definitely very helpful. I just got my 5 month old Akita pup from a guy who didn’t want him anymore. And this video was very informative. His last owner kind of ignored him and had him under weight. With me I can tell he has become happier but is still shy and untrusting but is becoming better day by day. My first Akita but my last dog was a cane corso so I’m used to big dog breeds but I can definitely tell the difference in how they act. Will be watching more of your videos

We have two akitas, one male and a female.The male has been extremely patient with the female who was 1 month and a half old when we brought her home. She was constantly barking at him, bothering him all the time but he was always playful and gentle with her.He is very protective with her and we don't bring them to doggie parks or doggie daycare because both are not doing well with other dogs.The male is not aggressive until the other dog is at which point he just flips the othe dog on its back and stands on its top.If the other dog reacts than he attacks.It's terrifying.
Omg your furbaby is adorable!!!! 🐕. Argh! Hopefully training will be such that you won't need a prong collar. I use a harness with my girl, a Japanese long haired akita, (lots of daily grooming required!)and when we are in the woods she is often off lead. We did a lot of work so she would listen to me despite the akita hearing. I really enjoyed this interview. Lots of good info that I wish I had 15 years ago, with my first american akita.
@@TheAkitaLife I used one with our previous girl. It was like power steering( american akita). She was a lot bigger than the girl we have now. She's less prey driven (squirrels still get her going but not as badly)
Thank you for this. I had a Akita we got due to behavioral issues, the family that purchased him could not deal with. While he was amazing and we were able to provide a safe home that he didn’t destroy (as he did at his original home), we could never deal with certain things… I could not walk him or bring him anywhere. We are preparing to get a Akita puppy I want to make sure it gets to be a happy healthy dog and travel with us. This Akita specific training info is helpful.
So far the only issue my cats have with my 19w/o Akita puppy is when she starts trying to play with them instead of just nudge and sniff and lick. We are still on top of her, correcting changes in play attitudes - but otherwise she’s rather sweet and gentle even when she gets too playful and startles the kitties. Except my kitty Garlic. She’s just a hater. There’s always one animal in the house she diverts her negative attention to. 😂 before the puppy it was my moms cat - before that it was my cat Lumen who I got a year before Garlic 🥲 She’s so spicy - but the puppy just gently attempts to make friends even though she’s swatted at every time 🥹
We got our 3rd Akita! Punky Pal is her name. Shes 22 weeks. Gets along with our other dogs(2 german sheperds) and our cats(5). What a great addition to our family!
We got Punky from a farm over by Winterset in Iowa. They raise Coone hounds and sheep for shows. She said it was her last litter, and this Akita has the best temperament and is good with all dogs, even my little dog, and people and kids. She was only $300 because the litter got ringworm out on the farm so she has a small scar. There is a place in Minnesota, maybe its called True Blue Akitas? The cost of those are around $1800 but people say are good temperment too. Our 2nd Akita was from Indiana, Indianapolis, she from a line of Mariah Akitas but she was aggressive toward other dogs and very overprotective and had autoimmune disorder, she cost $1200. Many home bred Akitas around my area have hip dysplasia, like our first one that came from someone who just had some puppies. We love those Akitas, it just a different kind of love. There is a very good line of German Shepards in my area, many people I know have these dogs. We fostered one and we are keeping her. We also rescued 2 husky lab mixes from a local farm. We have a waggin tail of a good time on our farm here in Iowa.
Definitely not good with cats or small animals. They have innate genetic predisposition to hunt anything. Akitas do not view other dogs as dogs, they view them as prey. If you are not willing to work to mitigate this behavior, you will encounter dead animals in future.
Did you know the breed name “American Akita” was given in Mexico? 🇲🇽 After the Japanese tried to keep the breed name Akita exclusively for the Japanese line (Ichinoseki), the American line (Dewa) was renamed as “Great Japanese Dog”, and finally in Mexico it was named as “American Akita”, which remains until now.

I have to agree with many of these comments - what a phenomenal interview. She really understands the difference between just training a dog and why/how to train a dog. I'd also like to say I was considering an Akita for a protection dog only and after this video I'm going to put more thought into if this breed is 100% what I need. Thank you for the interview.
The food thing is bizarre to me-you have to take it a dog or a pack at a time. I think staring a pup to crate training is good-if done properly-but I don’t think it’s always necessary for the lifetime. My Akitas free feed. No issues. They used to all eat at the same time (not crated) but throughout the pack lifespan it changes. As owners we have to be flexible…I’ve never had dogs spinning or having “fireworks” over food…there are plenty of ways to teach an animal to not be reactive in multitudes of situations. Including feeding…
I was agreeing with her up until she started talking about “northern breeds”, aka spitz dogs. 13:35 she starts talking about huskies/malamutes and saying that these dogs don’t need their owner to tell them what to do to pull a sled, is by far the most incorrect statement I’ve ever heard and known. I’ve owned huskies and husky mixes for several years, as well as do dog sledding both competitively and for fun, these dogs NEED to listen to their owners. No musher would ever put a dog that doesn’t listen on their team. You don’t want a dog pulling a sled and deciding to run off into the bushes, and not listening to you. I’m sorry but I honestly think she is full of it and that she likes to spout nonsense more than anything. I mean she also acts like Akitas are more like wild animals than dogs.
I disagree with the child assessment-if any kid is yelling and screaming and all over the dog the parent is failing at parenting regardless of breed. Every Akita I’ve ever owned has adored children. They love to be snuggled and kissed. Children need management as much as a dog does. If the adult can parent and be consistent with a child and a dog they’ll be fine. If they are crappy parents and don’t understand learning theory than it’ll be a mess-regardless of age of kid or breed.
Currently rescued a 2 year old akita Shepard we are on day 3 with him and are 4 year old cane corso mastiff and I definitely have had to be very persistent with both of them but so far for both of them are doing pretty good NOTE mastiff is not fixed and the akita is fixed but great video and definitely learn alot from what you guys have sed
I'm wondering how my daughter Akita is able to simply get along with her German Shephard. She already had a Black German Shepherd Puppy when she found an American Akita wandering the streets. We don't know his history; outside, we could tell he wasn't treated well by his last owner. The biggest surprise is how he tolerates her German Shephard. He's of the same sex, and every time we turn around, the Akita will be just lying around minding his business, and the German Shephard will start picking on him until he gets up and wrestles around with him. People say he, the Akita, tolerates the German Shephard because he was a puppy and adopted him when my daughter brought him home. An example of the Akita doing what some say isn't that normal was when she had to leave the Akita at the Vet for a day because of medical problems from his time living on the street. She said when she picked him up from the Clinic, his tail was down, and he was kind of sad looking. As soon as he saw the German Shephard, his tail was as far up in the air as an Akita (with their ringtails) could get it, and he was all happy again.
At what age can a slip collar or choke chain be used? I understand corection and reward training is nessacery. People are starting reward obdience training at 8 weeks. Ive heard the earler the training the better. Is it ok to do reward only obidiece traing than add correction when the pup is old enough for that equiptment? Is there a form of correction than can begin at eight weeks?
how do I bring my American akita down in weight nobody or vet will so me some please help me he is only five and they put him on steroids because most of his fur falls out at summer time in my opinion they ruined him it's super hard
Weight is a simple equation of calories in vs calories out. To lose weight your dog needs to either eat less, exercise more, or some combination of the two.
Hi, I have a 4 yr old Akita. I had to put my 8 yr old dog dwn a few days ago. Will she sit n wait Fr him too come bk, or will she b ok. Shall I leave her on her own. Or get another companion Fr her. I’ve seen they’ll sit n wait. I don’t want her Linley. ❤️ from wales 🌈❤️💜🌈
I would wait a little bit before getting another dog. Losing her friend will be a big adjustment, so you don't want to throw her another curve ball right away
I have a question. I'm in a wheelchair and am interested in having a large/giant breed as my service dog. Akitas have always been one of my favorite breeds, but do you believe they would make a good service dog?
As mentioned, it could definitely work. Akitas are amazing dogs! That being said, as a humble viewer that's owned a couple of Akitas (including one now), I would STRONGLY recommend a lot of professional training by a knowledgeable trainer for both you and the dog. I would also recommend doing a ton of research on breeders and spending the money to get a quality dog. Lots of exceptions to the "Akita rules" here in the comments, but those "rules" exist because Akitas have a very long history of behaving the way that they do. Another large breed dog to consider if you haven't already is a bull mastiff. They definitely have their own quirks, and most definitely slobber A LOT, but their general temperament may be a better fit for what you're looking for. They are still very effective guarding dogs/protectors, but they're not as aloof and generally not as prey driven/dog aggressive as Akitas have the potential to be. Again, just my humble $.02.
