This is the first in my step-by-step video series showing you how to teach your dog to roll over. Tinta is learning this behavior for the first time, and you'll see all my mistakes and problem-solving along the way! If I successfully train the complete behavior, I'll make an overview video as well just giving a brief overview of each step.

This is the best tutorial I've seen! No one else actually shows teaching this trick to a dog who doesn't already know it yet - actually seeing the teaching process and all of the little steps and backtracking and patience is SO valuable! Thank you!!

When you have small dogs these excercises are fairly easy. But when you own a giant puppy a Newfoundland, the weight isn't the same. As she had leg surgeries on both knees at the age of 2 and a half months I didn't dare bother her until her first year. Now she's 16 months, a hefty big dog (unlike my previous Newfoundland) weighs 58kg and doing brilliantly well with every trick. She rolls over and is so amusing to see her four beary legs in the air. She's as tall as me when she's on her hind legs. She holds my waist and we walk. This video was so lovely to watch and I truly LOVED the black furry head coz you can't see the eyes. Newfies are the same. Thanks for sharing and caring 👍👍👍🐾🐾🐾😃😃😃😘

This was really informative. I've been working at training my Pomeranian to roll over and he's totally uncooperative. I'm using the same technique. Actually all of the videos demonstrating this trick use the same luring behavior. I guess I just need to keep working at it. BTW I have trained my previous Pom to do this but don't recall it being so difficult. Maybe my last Pom was just smarter! Also your pup is adorable. How old is she?

Thanks so much for this video! My two small pups are really struggling with this and I thought it was something wrong with how I was doing it. I've taught dogs to roll over in the past quite easily. It seems some dogs just need more shaping to get used to the movement and not be as afraid of going into a roll.

I am training my yorkie to do the rollover too, but seems like when i said rollover he just stand there and look at me, he wont do the rollover, but if i have threats for him then he'll do the rollover...why do i always have to have the treats for him to do it. But he won't do it just by command?
@vibhaspalding6457

My yorkie will only do rollover with a lure if a treat only. Now she is 7 months. She has been doing this since she was almost 4 months. Started training as spon as i bought her at 9 weeks. But 4 weeks, she would not respond as expected. After some trust, she gained some confidence. I would like her to do without the lure. I am not sure whether i shalk get there by the time she is 12 months old. I hope so. Any comments, tips will be welcomed.

Yes, in fact it's probably much easier lol. My little dogs are so afraid of not being upright, larger dogs seem to have more confidence about it. I've seen some people go directly into a roll on their first try and they're usually large breeds, it seems the small dogs need a lot more shaping like shown in this video.

Hi Iva Bright. I have a giant hefty puppy, 16 month Newfoundland, weighs 58 kilos. With big dogs you have to be careful of their spine. She's as tall as me when she holds onto my waist to be taken on very short walks. She's been doing the most difficult tricks. Rolling over is her game as she gets big caresses on her beary furry tummy. PATIENCE, LOVE AND PRAISE ARE THE KEY TO SUCCESS, no matter what size the dog is. The only trick I refuse to teach her is the LAY DEAD. My 15 YEAR NEWFOUNDLAND AND MY BLACK LAB, BOTH HAD A STROKE, ON 22ND JUNE AND 26TH JUNE 2018 AND THE VET PUT THEM TO SLEEP. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2020. 😘🐾🐾🐾

Your dog must be really smart cause I tried with my dog for an hour and couldn’t even get him on his back. My dog is a pug and the only tricks he knows are sit, Shake, high five, and lay down. I followed all steps in this video except I did not use the clicker. I even used cheese for the treat and did it on my bed for a soft surface. Please tell me what I am doing wrong

Hi, John. Hopefully I can help you figure this out! How far were you able to get? This is the order of the steps: 1. Lie down. 2. Roll onto one hip. 3. Curl up to eat treat close to ribs without getting up. 4. Lay on side eating treats near shoulder. 5. Lay on side with one front leg in the air. 6. Lay on side with one front leg in air, stretching back with head to eat treat on opposite side of body. 7. Keep stretching back until both front paws are in the air. 8. Roll onto back. 9. Roll over. The biggest mistake I usually see when teaching this behavior is that the trainer advances too quickly in the steps, causing the dog to get up to try to eat the treat instead of performing the step you're working on. Don't try to move on to the next step until you have done several successful repetitions of the current step. If you try to move on to the next step and fail two times in a row, go back to the previous step and do several more repetitions. That way your dog will stay engaged and will prevent him from getting frustrated. For many dogs, it takes more than a single session to teach this behavior, so don't give up! One other tip is, instead of working for a whole hour, work for 15 minutes at a time and take a few hours break before trying again. Let me know which step your dog CAN do and which step you and your dog are getting stuck on, and hopefully I can help. Good luck!

FACT Academy Thank you. He got to step 2 and then I just gave up cause he was sort of failing a lot and got frustrated. I will go try again and follow these steps. I will try using a pen as clicker as well cause I don’t have an actual one.

Any update? Hope it's going well! Another option instead of a clicker or a pen is you could say a word, like "yes!" every time your dog does the step correctly. You would say "yes!" first, THEN open your hand to deliver the treat.

FACT Academy Yes it has. I got him very close. I had to stop for a while cause I have been a bit busy but I am going to pick it up again soon. Thank you for all your help.

Clicker training sucks..

Hi C DHAN. I never use a clicker to train my dog. The clicking noise irritates me. Instead I PRAISE and give a treat to my 16 month Newfoundland and say GOOD GIRL.
