Come-when-called is one of the most important behaviors you will ever teach your dog. It has saved so many dog's lives. As your dog's caretaker, it is up to you to help him/her navigate our human world and to keep him/her safe from human dangers. Chasing a squirrel isn't bad...unless it's straight into a busy road.
Since it is so important that your dog will run immediately to you when you call, you must create a strong emotional association with the cue (your command) that you use to call your dog, like "Rosie, come!" The emotional response must be even stronger than the desire to chase a squirrel!
How can we possibly accomplish this? We can start establishing this response by using high-value rewards and a non-distracting environment.
In future videos, we will be increasing the perceived value of our rewards (chicken!) by setting up controlled scenarios with distractions that our dog cannot reach. Then, when we are able to get the run-to-me response we want, we reward heavily. With enough practice the dog will learn to assume our rewards will be better than chasing a squirrel.
Pair that with a variable reinforcement schedule (watch the end of the video) and you'll be the proudest dog-parent while you practice calling your dog away from a pack of playing pups and he/she rockets toward you with no hesitation!
Thanks to Lee and Banner for being such awesome students and for letting us film their progress! Thanks also to Rod for being the best camera-man and video-editor (and boyfriend) ever! And most of all thanks to all of YOU for watching and for supporting our efforts of spreading the word on kind teaching methods for dogs!
