McCann Dog Training what if every time I move my dog back into position she just messes up again? How long is too long to be on a training with a dog? What if we’re going outside to pee and I can’t stand in the door waiting for her to do right or she will make a mistake? I hope I can become a good trainer one day. This is so hard. You guys make it look so easy.
Both of my dogs know the "wait" command pretty well, especially my 7 month old puppy. I started teaching them wait pretty much as soon as they came home. I use wait for waiting for food, waiting to go out(or in) the door, out or into the car, wait to come out of the kennel, wait to got greet someone new or another dog, wait to take the treat from my hand, etc. I even use wait as a stay command sometimes! I think teaching "wait" to a dog is very useful!
Aww, thanks, Valerie! I'm going to let you in on a little secret. That is my goal!!;) On this channel, I'm going to train you to be the best trainer for your own four-legged family member! I'm glad you're enjoying the McCann Dogs channel so much! Thanks for watching ~Ken
My 11 week old husky/corso waits in the other room.while I get his food. He waits until I tell him to eat as well I can leave the room with bowl on the floor and he doesnt move until I say so. Your videos on leadership has the be the most helpful video set on youtube ever
Both of my pups have known wait since they were about 4mo old. Such a critical skill to learn, if nothing else just working in door manners with the "wait" command will get them to start understanding wait in other places. I think so many people are more prone to "communicate" to their dogs through the leash or just say No and pointing to what they want. If you talk to your dog, they will start to understand what it is you are asking them to do, they are smart little animals. What do you do for when you leave the house if you let your dog stay outside of a crate? A lot of the time I find telling him to wait while I'm trying to get out the door, but that waters down the "wait" command because he's never released. Same thing if you tried using stay, there's never a release so it loses value of the dog actually staying in the stay till released. Enjoyed the video as always :)
Really great question, SD Cruiser! The wait is a really versatile command for sure. But it will begin to lose its value if you leave your dog in that position then allow them to choose when they get up or release etc.Choose another word. Use a "place", "door", "spot", or whatever, and train that position almost the same way as you train your "wait" command. If you're just starting with that new word, I might get a kong with a treat in it, or a new chew that the dog can have unsupervised. Then use *that word* and go place the kong or treat in that spot. There are no consequences for getting up from that spot, but your dog will be so focused on the fun chew item that they won't be as interested in the fact that you're leaving. Soon enough, there will be som much value built into your *magic word;)* that your dog will race to the spot (bed, top of steps, other definitive location) because they know something great always happens there. Your dogs could even be rewarded separately in their crates with the doors left open! And you don't need to use that command for any other reason! Have fun with this one, your dogs will LOVE it! ~Ken
Best channel on canine training. Helped with crate training after the first poop accident that threw away weeks of smooth crate habits. Although I train my pupper with silent commands at least the ones he knows and that needs reinforcement. Since he gets over excited when hearing Good Boy! Yes is my only marking for now, keeping him in a successful mindset. I like the Nose Eyes Ears way to communicate with animals.
I’m having the same problem with my 13 week lab. What worked for you guys? My pup is jumping and knocking her food all over the floor or her siblings food everywhere
Hello Ken, well done fabulous tutorial. Love your training methods, clear and concise without, an area of confusion for the dog. You and your team are all amazing and I am learning much from your Gentle Art of Dog Training ...
Really good set of videos you have out, but at that last dog, I can’t get over how at the end it’s all up by your treat pocket like a crack head at the trap house door 🤣
Thank you so much for your videos. We have a 13 week old double doodle and have been working on several things. I was wondering when do you start phasing out treats? Are treats something that I'll always need on hand? I'd really like to not have to reward him for the rest of his days.
Great question, hurstfamily6! The wait it a skill you can use that’s like a temporary stay, but they can be released remotely. The stay is a much more definitive “remain in position” skill where your dog can only be released when you’re back at their side. It’s a really great exercise to use if you’re trying to help your dog to understand leadership. Here is a video that will show you exactly what the “stay” command is all about: How To Teach Your Dog To Sit And Stay With Distractions - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HSDyNDcVAGY.html Thanks for watching! ~Ken
@@McCannDogs Maybe one way to think of it is stay there until I come back, and wait until I tell you to do something else? Just wondering if that makes it a bit more understandable?
I am going to try these steps, I am a 1st time dog owner, we have a GS, and she doesn't listen to me (Iam not a good leader) we are at the verge or considering rehoming her which I really don't want to, so Iam going to follow your steps to the T hope things work out
Great videos, just a suggestion. How about McCann logoed vest for training treats, easier and quicker than a pant pocket and you could have them for sale. I’ll take a medium one.
Interesting suggestion, Steel Dust! We do have McCann Dogs adjustable bait pouches that people seem to love! Our agility students will occasionally get custom training vests. I will suggest it to our store staff, and see if that could be a product that we could stock! I will definitely keep you posted. Thanks for the suggestion! ~Ken
I found “wait” on my own since I am training my SD to wait before she gets out of the car. She also does well with “no” when she wants to come to where I am now but she is going to be getting out of the car where she is (she is abt cat size) until I pick her up to put her on the ground (her basket or travel purse) so she is safe. I can add wait so she stays where she is until I come to get her so she is safe and obedient. She is well enough trained to were she is doing her job and is invisible. I did have a strange incident with her recently. She was walking beside me and all of a sudden she put the breaks on. So i told her we needed to start over again, scooped her up and went back out. I decided I should make sure she didn’t have to go potty. She did need to but doesn’t like to do her thing away from home willingly so she finally alerted to going potty and then we went back to what we were going to do without her suddenly putting on the breaks. Happy little SD again! She is very well behaved and does very well. She is a bit strange, doesn’t like to play, be petted or picked up but she is very good for her job as a SD, so that is just fine with me. She is a matter fact little dog. Love it!
I’m doing my best to train my Golden to be a good citizen. If all the videos and the in person class I took no one taught the reward them for waiting in the wait spot. Now that I see it it seems a no brainer. Thanks!
Can you please post a video with a less...adaptable puppy?? Mine is a nightmare, there is absolutely no way in hell she is gonna wait if that food is on the floor. All i can do is hold the food hostage until she agrees to sit and that about it, if its on the ground she thinks it's hers already and she's fast!
I'm confused by the difference between wait and stay. What difference does it make if I want my dog to stay for 1 minute or 10? The command to stay means stay regardless, no?
Thank you so much for all your videos, I am planning to adopt a rescued dog and I am trying to learn as much as possible before the dog comes to our home. I have a question what happens when you don't have food as reward? Does the dog continues to listen? Or one has to do this for the rest of the time
thank you for the video! what do you recommend i do if my dog gets discouraged after not following my commands and just lays down? I find myself in training scenarios where my puppy is either really distracted or not paying attention to me and I have her on a lead to not let her roam free, but then she just lays down and stops paying attention to me. HELP please!
I also realize your dogs are always looking at you for the next command, what do i do if my puppy doesnt keep her attention on me. she looks at me for a split second then looks away at something else.
I love your video so much. Can you make videos about "stop your dog barking when you are working". Sometimes I find it difficult to study as my dog keeps barking and biting on my dress. Thank you a lot. 💕
Hi there! This is almost a management issue. Your dog feels like they can get some interaction and engagement when you’re busy. Your dog needs to know that there will be times when you can’t be focused on them. If they have a place to go and relax when you’re distracted, or something to do while you get work done, then they’re less likely to insist on your attention. I’m going to share 3 videos with you in the comments below that I want you to work on with your dog! Happy Training! ~Ken

@@McCannDogs Thank you a lot. You are so the kindest blogger I have ever seen. I watched the videos you share these days and gain a lot of experiences. They are so useful and easy to follow. Please keep your wonderful job about training the dogs.
You guys do good training for your dogs but you always show videos of dogs that have obviously done it before, would be pretty good if you showed a puppy that has no experience so people know it’s not as easy as it looks
Good morning. I love your videos. Thank you for giving us your time.. My question is ! I am going to see a gsd who has been is shelter since April as owner is going away and yesterday saw the add that he wants to re Home. I arranged a visit for tomorrow with owner. Is it a good idea that he see the owner and me together ? Or shall I do gradual introductoin so I build up a relationship with Buddy (dogs name). I am retired so I understand that I need to spend time once he comes to my house. He is 4 years old and from what I have been told has a lovely nature/character. I also understand that training is possible especially now that he is matured so an adjustment period is needed for buddy and show him some love and do and don't. Any suggestions pls to help me with the dogs transitions. Tks Alfred
Ok I need a video..on..how to stop chewing...biting...and won't wear even a halter...comes right out...what kind of collar...do I use..that won't come off or she won't chew it off.. Plus..leash chewing...alot of energy...I play tug w him..Shepador.....half lab..and German...11mts old..ty
I don't quite understand the difference between wait n stay, l use stay to wait for their food, sitting at the curb when out for a walk n any time l want them to wait, am l doing the right thing???
I really like your videos and advice but I wish more of your videos were with dogs that have never tried or worked on these things. My 11 week old puppy starts biting on other things when I try this wait for food..
Hi Do you have a tip for stopping my dog thinking me giving them the treat is the release for the training. As. Soon as she has the treat she is moving about She is very young only 12weeks But does excellent work with wait and stay. Just the release I need help on Thanks for your videos some great advise on them
Great question, TVFuzzie! There are a couple of things you need to be aware of. Make sure you return to your dog toe to toe before you pull out a treat to reward. This will put you in a good position to reward again for her maintaining that position. Be sure you're holding her leash, so if she decides to get up, you can stop her from going on a puppy burn around your training area. When you reward your puppy use language like "good sit" as you reward her, then reward her right away after she gets the first treat to show her that remaining in position will bring even more treat goodness! If you are able to continue praising her as she remains in one position, it will help support that position and allow you to get more rewards in before she moves! Happy Training!~Ken
Receiving the reward in the same way each time can get boring for some dogs. You can try moving the reward away from the dog to make it chase your hand. Pair the treat with praise and rubs under the chin or along the sides. Make yourself the most interesting thing in the room when you reward. Phase out the treats so pleasing you is the reward. Sorry if you've already tried all that, but that's my suggestion.
May I ask your opinion on the utility of “wait” vs “leave it” commands? It seems like you’d need to use either one or the other in the case of food, but “wait” can then expand to apply to things like getting out of the car, while “leave it” can expand to things like chasing small critters. Do you feel that “wait” is more effective/important?
I love your thinking here, demaupin! You can use all of these examples for your wait. You wait is something you’re going to use “before you need it”. So that your dog remains in a safe or helpful position. Your “Leave It” will refer to a specific “thing”. Maybe it’s something on the ground, or your dog sees an animal that you k ow they’re going to want to chase. You’re going to use it “when you need it” to let your dog know that you don’t want them to get that “thing”. A lot of quotations I know... but I hope you understand my point! Happy Training! ~Ken
HI guys I have been working with my 4 + 5 month old pups and they have wait down These videos have been a life safer BUT my one pup seems to be showing some food aggression when it comes to both of them eating a bone or special treat she will take his growl or snap at him What can I do >?? Is there one of your training videos available to help me ?? Thanks Jeanann
Ok maybe this is a silly question, but I do wonder, will there ever be a day that I can expect my puppy to do things without a food reward? I’m not at all against food rewards, I just want to be prepared 😉
Hi there, MamaLlama 303! This is such a good question! The simple answer is yes. All of these skills are introduced by using food as a reward because it is a resource that dogs value. It’s easy to communicate the value of their effort by using food to reward the result. There are a few important elements to using food in training that will help you to not become dependent on using food though. We have a video that you’ll find helpful that talks about how food can be faded out of your training process. Here is a link to that video: Dog Training Using Food Luring - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iZmpnqJDrFc.html Thanks for watching! ~Ken
We go to puppy at 4 months old she was kind of bestowed upon us she is an Australian Shepherd Border Collie and she was never really owned by anybody but she doesn't listen to our words as much as hand signals she is forever watching our hands we've had her hearing checked and she can hear just fine but she's all about hand signals and treats she doesn't like being touched and she doesn't listen well what do we do with that
How did you train your dog that “ok” means he/she can get up and go? I’m trying this with my dog and he just stands there. But, he’s a 2 yr old chihuahua I rescued from a foster home. He was found wandering around the streets and in bad shape. He’s healthy now but he obviously had been abused by the way he cowards when I went towards him when I first brought him home. I don’t know if that has anything to do with him not learning quickly.
Hi there, Karen! Sometimes you'll need to use a little motion away from your pup to encourage him out of his sit. You can wiggle your fingers, or gently clap your hands while you use some encouraging language to let him know he's free to follow you out of that position. Thanks for watching! ~Ken
McCann Dog Training hi! Thanks so much for your reply! I have tried all of that. The only thing that works for me is literally picking him up and kind of encouraging him to walk. Lol. He learns everything else so incredibly fast! He’s learned sit, down, up, stand (he gets up on his hind legs), pray (head down and butt up in the air) and paw (he gives me his paw to shake). He learned stay very quickly but when I say “ok” he just stares at me. I’m also trying to teach him to not take a treat until I say “yours” (kind of like in your video). He has no problem sitting and waiting but when I say “yours” he just stares at me again! Lol. I end up putting it really close to him, repeating “yours” until he eats it. He really loves the training. He will go sit on the floor where we practice and run in circles and jump telling me he wants to train! 😂. Plus I think it’s really brought us so much closer. He’s snuggling up with me whenever I’m on the couch, sleeps with me, he’s very affectionate, etc. I sound like I’m describing my boyfriend!😂 Anyway, I’ve blabbed enough! Have a great night!!
Hi there, Devyn! We use a variety of treats while training. It’s nice to mix the treats up a little to keep things interesting for your dog. We do have a go-to treat for those times when we want the dog to LOVE the treats we are using. Here is the recipe: The Best Homemade Dog Training Treats - Professional Dog Training Tips ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5rVgHLnt4W0.html Thanks for watching! ~Ken
@@McCannDogs Thanks, I'll give that a try. I've been trying a few different ones and I haven't found one that my puppy loves yet. Most treat seem to big or hard for his puppy teeth.
What if my dog is so hyper about feeding and eating that he’s goes absolutely crazy and isn’t paying attention at all to me . Should I use a leash while feeding
My brother thinks that if you teach your dogs this they’ll become aggressive with their food. Is this true? (Keep in mind he’s not a trained professional, he just thinks he knows everything)
Hi there, Lorena! The first exercise with the food bowl can be taught during your puppy’s first weeks home. Using the “rule out” when feeding your puppy is a really great way to start to teach a little self-control. You can start teaching stationary skills using “wait” as soon as your puppy has an understanding of a sit or down command. But the great part about the “wait” is that you can use it with any position. Sit, down or even stand! Happy Training! ~Ken
Could u try help me with my 8 week old cocker spaniel, he won't stop nipping and when I tell him to stop he comes back to bite even harder, and he is going potty in the house
Hi there, Boomerang Gaming! Here is a video from our channel where we teach a puppy to stop nipping that will help you to train through this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3-ozpynzZuU.html Happy Training! ~Ken
Hi Deborah! You will always be able to use your voice to praise your dog when it comes to letting them know that they are doing something correctly. Praise and touch is a little less effective when it comes to stationary exercises if you're not careful though. Food is a better choice. You should try to figure out why your pup doesn't want food. It may be because he isn't hungry, or that he's a little uncomfortable in that environment. It may be because your puppy isn't interested in the specific food reward you're using! Take a look at some of these factors and see if switching up the reward, or practicing just before your puppy's mealtime is helpful to build a little more food drive. Happy Training! ~Ken
We rescued two dogs that are at least a year old. My biggest problem is when I take them out they pull so hard on their leash that I am literally running. If they see a squirrel, or another dog I usually end up in a bush or just fall in a yard. I need help so much for this issue. I have loved your videos so much.
Hi there, Glenda! Using your wait at your door before your dogs go out will put you in a better position to manage this. The unexpected pulling does present a little more of a problem though. Have you tried something like a Gentle Leader? Using a head collar won't allow your dogs to be able to "lean in" to their collar and pull as much as they are now. Here is a link to our Gentle Leader video so you can have a look: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JW_KVUgIozY.html Thanks for watching! ~Ken
This puppy is a paid actor...my puppy will wait for a treat, do spins, sit, lay down, stand, left and right paw but once the bowl is out she will climb my arm by any means necessary to get to it and woe betide anyone who tries to lift it up again, I think thats how her last owner died.
My puppy is showing signs of food aggression. She was eating the cats food (she's not allowed) and my 9 year old son went to pull her off of the table (her front paws were on there because the food is on a coffee table) and she growled and bit him. She actually wounded him and drew blood. Obviously I was very upset. I had hoped it was a one time thing, but she continues to show signs of aggression while eating. Please help me break her of this horrible habit so my children can enjoy and love their puppy rather than fear her.
I, too, was looking for an answer to this. Our newest rescue -about 10 months old - empties her bowl in seconds, and it one of those special bowls to make them slow down! She came to the shelter as a stray so the combination of living on the streets, then several months in a shelter has made her extra anxious about food. She has a blind eye that could have been an issue in a group setting (shelter).
I wish my dog was excited to eat idk what the heck is wrong with him he’s such a turd. I buy this fancy freeze dried food that you soak and it seems like the best possible option and he still barely eats :(
