Same. And the moment where Astrid asks Hiccup to promise her it won't go wrong cause people act like she only cared about him in the end when everyone loved him but she always cared, when he started getting suspiciously good she was aggressive but she immediately went back to caring

it's the single most important piece of animation in the movie because it's simple but effective in showing you Stoick isn't just some BAD GUY. He's just a father who's done something terrible but is too prideful to take it back.

@@panther-nk2hn no I mean from the beginning. If you look early on when people made fun of Hiccup she'd glare at them. Like when Snotlout was teasing him in the opening she glares at him. To be fair on Stoick, he and the entire tribe had pretty much been taught and dedicated his life to what was considered common knowledge that ‘Dragons are the enemy’ that had been going on for centuries. Great reaction! Hope to see more of the trilogy (no pressure though. You choose that, not us).

Stoick is canonically the sixth generation of vikings in Berk alone, I believe, according to some of the third movie's lines. Hiccup, Astrid and them are the seventh (or potentially it's one more than that for both? Not entirely sure). Anyways, viking culture might claim dragons to be hostile beasts - as most wild animals can be when threatened - before Berk, but they always had it the worse, and also were the only ones remaining against the entire region's dragons, so they were both the only source of non-wild food (y'know, herds of sheep, pre-caught fish, and so forth) and the only major threat from the dragons' perspectives.

So about Stoic. He was obviously ingrained at an early age that dragons where the enemy. Only to then have his wife taken from him by a dragon too. After his argument with Hiccup it explicitly shows him staggering backwards, almost immediately regretting what he had just said. But he continues forward cause he sees it as a chance to better his people. His attitude towards Hiccup in the beginning isn't so much disappointment, but fear for his future. Stating he knew what he had to do by Hiccups age, but Hiccup doesn't. I'd say Stoic has no idea how to teach cause he just figured it out himself, thus him not listening to Hiccup cause he thinks he knows better.

As much if as stoick is kind of an ass in this movie, I like that he's not one dimensional. The whole "it's what's on the inside he cant stand" thing is funny, but I think means that stoick is disappointed in him not because of his lack of strength but because he puts himself and others in danger like he did in the beginning of the movie (which isn't entirely Hiccups fault either, he just desperately wanted to be useful). But one of my favourite things in this movies is when he tells him "you're not my son" be looks like he regrets it immediately after stepping outside. He has green eyes, he's left handed, he's a runt, and in the books he has red hair (which red hair and green eyes is I think the second most rare combination of hair and eye color), and at least in the books he was born on February 29th, though there is no mention of if this is or isn't true in the movies. This movie is a masterclass in symmetrical storytelling. When Hiccup finds Toothless in the woods, he recognizes the fear in the dragon's eyes. He decides to free the dragon, and in return the dragon doesn't kill him. Yet later, Gobber says a dragon *always* goes for the kill. Hiccup, thinking out loud, asks the question "so why didn't you?" Then near the end, Astrid says almost the same exact thing: "The rest of us would've killed that dragon. So why didn't you?" Toothless and Hiccup recognized a kindred spirit in each other. They're perfect mirrors of each other.

And that theme comes back in Coming Back Around, along other instances as well. The romantic theme has a few other pop ups as a leitmotif for Hicstrid. And the theme you hear when the two are often in danger comes back in the third movie right at the moment where Hiccup begs the Light Fury to save Toothless. Personal story, because I never connected that Hiccups contraption was the reason behind Toothless loosing his tail wing I genuinely thought throughout the entire movie that Toothless wasn’t a night fury since I saw the night fury fly while Toothless couldn’t fly and that everyone was just making a big mistake. I was just a kid but that missunderstanding stayed with me for literal years.

Just a fun fact. While they are based on cats, they are also based on dogs. There was a huge a debate among the crew of if Dragons should be like cats or dogs. The answer came which ever was cuter at the time. So they ended up basing it on both cats and dogs.

If you liked the aesthetic and soundtrack of this film, you may enjoy Disney/Pixar’s Brave if you haven’t seen it. I also highly recommend Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, if you haven’t seen that. It’s very different from How to Train Your Dragon and Brave, but could be my favorite animated film. The second Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs isn’t as good as the first in my opinion but still good.

Before you watch the sequel, here’s a bit of trivia you need to know: 1. Toothless had the same designer as Stitch. Give Stitch twice the tummy and wings, and you’ll see it. 2. Stoic is voiced by Gerard Butler. Also known as the Phantom of the Opera.

A lots of people hate on Astrid and the others for how they treated Hiccup before he became good at dragon training but they had every right to hate him. The fans seem to forgot the fact, despite his good intentions, Hiccup did destroy the village more than a few times. He endangered them. And he was their next chief. A boy who didn’t take anything seriously, couldn’t fight, couldn’t follow direct orders and caused trouble every time he stepped outside was suppose to lead them, not only in everyday life but in a war against fucking fire breathing reptiles! And of course they started to like him when he became good at dragon training. As Hiccup said in the beginning of the movie, dragon killing was everything in there, because their lives depended on it. Dragons attacked. They were forced to but that doesn’t matter. (Mostly because the vikings didn’t know that.) They were attacking them. It’s obvious they would defend themselves. Now when Stoick disowned Hiccup. Everybody says or do things they didn’t really mean when they are angry. It was not only about Hiccup lying, but also about denying his own people. When he threw his helmet away and said he wasn’t one of them, he practically disowned himself and since he got the helmet from his mother, he disrespected her memory too. He acted for good reason, but he also betrayed his whole tribe, their traditions and history. I would also remind everyone that neither Stoick nor the other Vikings saw how Toothless and Hiccup befriended or known that the dragons were forced to attack them to get food. All they know is that the “unholy offspring of lightning and death” came out of nowhere blasted their arena and started fighting against another deadly fire breathing killing machine and that he was dangerous, so they need to protect their loved ones. In their eyes, dragons were still cruel, killing machines who had attacked them for centuries, burning their homes, wounding and killing their loved ones. To quote from the Book of Dragons: “Chokes its victim, burns its victim, turns its victim inside-out.” That’s fucking terrifying! Just as Stoick’s wife, Valka, was abducted by a dragon next to her a couple of months old baby, or as Gobber's hand and foot were bitten off and not so long ago they wanted to kill Hiccup. All they could do all their lives was to kill or die, and they had been raised to do that since they were children. Also let’s not forget about the fact that at the beginning Hiccup wanted to kill dragons. And he was also terrified of them, for good reasons. We should really stop acting like he was always “let’s save dragons, they are so innocents!” Because he wasn’t. The only reason he didn’t kill Toothless is because he couldn’t. He wanted to, he raised his dagger. But he couldn’t. He changed. He had character development. So did Astrid. And Stoick. And everybody else. (Except for Snotlout. He was on a rollercoaster throughout the movies and series. He had nice moments and I like him very much, but gods, he can be an a**) And don’t come to me with the “a parent should be proud of their child no matter what” because that’s a pile of yakdung. If your son continuously endangers the well being of you and your whole tribe and betray all the traditions you ever had, while disowning himself, while disrespecting his dead mother’s memory, while siding with those who made your and every other person’s life miserable for centuries you have every right to be angry.
