How To Train Your Dragon's Most Unexpected Sound

The esraj has always seemed like the most out-of-place instrument revealed by Omni Music Publishing's official How To Train Your Dragon scorebook for John Powell's score. I asked Tim Rodier from Omni Music if he knew anything about why it was in the score, he gave me John Powell's answer. From there, I connected the dots to create my own reasoning for the details.
The esraj plays the "violin/fiddle solo" in The Dragon Book (2m11) and Not A Viking (4m30).

Thanks again to Tim Rodier from Omni Music Publishing for getting an answer from John Powell about why this instrument is in the score! It really shaped the direction of this video. The rest is how I think that answer fits into the story and context, why I think Powell felt the need to use it. The scorebook is linked for purchase in my description along with my other sources. Me too. I never would have questioned it. That’s why I was so surprised when the book came out and I saw it was the esraj.

I came across this channel a few days ago and it feels like I’ve found a gold mine of John Powell’s score analysis..es, it’s always nice to see that someone appreciates his fantastic music. Great video! "High tension and high drama." Well, when you think about it, there aren't many moments best described like that. Like at the end of Training Out There, shock and fear may be a better phrase than tension, but not for Not a Viking [4m30] and The Dragon Book [2m11].

Thank you, and good point. I’ve also noticed the gadulka is always used aggressively in the score while it’s capable of other tones in its folk usage.

This soundtrack has so much to constantly delve into, absolutely love it! Can you do a video on another John Powell scored movie? Solo: A Star Wars Story? There’s no videos about the amazing soundtrack used in the film and I really want a breakdown. Great video as always!

Thanks! There’s somehow always more to learn about it! That’s an excellent request. I’ve only seen the movie once and I don’t know it well, but I like the deluxe album quite a bit. In fact, I just recently recommended it on my Twitter page, I meant to on my community tab too. There’s a lot I still don’t know about it (especially the all-important story and context), and it’s over two hours of music, but I definitely have some notes and sources already. I may split it into shorter videos like this.

@@FilmScoreandMore Very cool! I’ll keep an eye out for anything you make! The deluxe soundtrack is my favorite, the added crescendo on “Lando’s Closet” that is cut off in the movie, (for good reason) is one of my favorite Star Wars tracks. Thanks for responding!

@@BrodyLehnertz That’s interesting. I really only know the deluxe album, so I wouldn’t know the differences between it and the original release or the film version. I don’t know when I’ll have a Solo video ready or even in production, but I’m definitely interested. Thanks for your interest. I'm glad. My sense of humor is a big part of my personality, I just don't always know how to show it in video, especially since I want to take each topic seriously enough. But I'm starting to figure out how to make it shine through. I'm glad viewers can enjoy the humor, and honestly a lot of it is in there just because I find it funny and it entertains me.

Editing is great. That always helps. "No image found" made me laugh. And the caption words getting bigger, for each new way a dragon can kill you, is a fun way to demonstrate the increased danger.

Fascinating ! I have to thank you for the research and efforts you put in each of these videos, it really shows. By the way, you mentioned at the beginning that this was cut from the "Not bagpipes ?" video for time, but if you ask me, you shouldn't worry about time. Most of us here are here because we enjoy what you do, so getting longer videos is no big deal at all ! I don't know how it is behind the scenes with how the algorithm works and whatnot, but I think I can speak for everyone here when I say that longer videos is not bad at all. Also, the "image not found" at 4:19 got me good. Nice one lol

Thanks for your thoughts! It was only going to be a brief mention in the Not Bagpipes video (which is my nickname for that one), and I didn’t know anything about the esraj at the time. I always appreciate your loyalty, support, and interest, but I also can’t expect it from most viewers. It’s really tough to build and maintain a channel, there are many things to balance. And I do think the Not Bagpipes video was packed enough already. I’m glad people are responding to the comedy, too! My sense of humor is a big part of my personality and I’m still trying to find ways to share it in videos. There have always been pieces of it, but I’m definitely doing more.

Well, my way of thinking is something along the lines of "do whatever makes you happy, and the people who follow you will be true fans". I don't run a channel, and I don't even know how the algorithm works or anything at all, so that's just my idealistic way of thinking about things - but again, this is not my channel. I imagine it's hard to build a community, especially when making content like yours, and not gaming like the best part of everyone else. And yes, I've noticed an increased effort in edits and humour, and so far I really enjoy it ! Nothing feels forced or "too much", it's just the right amount at the right moments.

@@thefiredragon6542 It’s definitely a balance. Part of it is that I can’t upload consistently since I’m not a full-time RU-vidr and since my whole life I’ve been a detail-oriented slow worker. It’s just how I am for better or worse. And part is that I mostly haven’t done trending topics (Nine Realms is the main exception) or other scores; I have some in the works, but none are ready yet. But there’s still something to what you say, that being myself and putting out my kind of videos can build a channel and a community. Like I said, it’s a balance. It’s a lot to figure out as I go.

Thanks very much. Honestly, I could probably afford to settle for lower quality in favor of more videos. I’m currently finishing up a video I’ve put way too much effort into, more than twice the length of this one and covering a lot more than just one instrument. I’m glad I did a smaller one like this before my current project and definitely I intend to do another short one next!

It's up to you, obviously. But I feel quality over quantity is probably more important for your kind of content. It's easy enough to play a game and upload a quick video about it and it's fine. Even if it's rushed and sloppy. But for analysis of music/instruments/score/etc, you can't afford to do a rushed and sloppy job. When it comes to information and not just entertainment, people want quality. That's my thoughts on it anyway.

It's essentially the sound of a tick in a list. That's how I interpret it anyway. I like the words getting bigger too, to show the increase in danger. Again, my interpretation.

I’m sure there will be plenty of differences. I’ve got an idea or two to keep it unique and even draw parallels with a very similar score. Mainly, I want people to see how the themes represent story ideas rather than characters. Thanks for watching through to the end. What do you think of the video overall?

I love what you are representing, it comes across as "here's a tiny detail but means so much more than what you'd think" - and I love those types of videos. There's so much work that goes into writing a score, even down to tiny details, and it's videos like this that show the thought and care and go into scoring a film that you'd otherwise not know. What you described for your thematic approach is a different approach to it than what I'm looking at, so we may end up with complimentory videos which would be awesome

Thanks Andrew, I'm glad you're able to take that much away from it and that I'm able to spread those tiny but important details. It will be interesting to see how our respective videos go. I will likely make more than one, and the one that acts as a direct comparison won't cover all the main themes or go super in-depth about them. Even so, it would be interesting to stay in touch and discuss things.
