How to Transfer All Data From An Old Mac to a New Mac

If you recently purchase a new Mac and you want to transfer all your information from your Mac onto it, there is a simple transfer option using Time Machine.
Time Machine is a built-in app on every Mac designed to back up your information. But you can use the same option to migrate all your data from one Mac to another Mac.
This process works the same between all Macs, so you can go between Macbook to Macbook, iMac to iMac, or any combination of Mac computers.
You just need an external hard drive to use as your back-up drive in order to use Time Machines.

This was one of the best explanations of how to use Time machine to move your data to a new IMac and I’ve watched many. My only suggestion would be talk a tiny bit slower.

Many thanks for your excellent video with crystal clear instructions. This gave me the confidence to replace my 2013 iMac with a new one doing all the setup & data transfer myself rather than wait for the Apple shop to reopen 12 April (UK). One tip I ALWAYS have an external drive running automatic backup using Time Machine & it did save me once.

Great video. It gave me the confidence to migrate my data from my 2013 MacBook Pro to my new 2020 MacBook Air versus paying someone to do so. The process was really quite easy, and all my applications and data transferred flawlessly.

If I want to migrate everything from CATALINA (old Imac) to BIG SUR (in a new Imac) it will copy ONLY the apps and setting but NOT the Operative System right? Thanks

This such an informative video! I only question myself how to move from my 1TB Fusion drive to a 256GB SSD with an external harddrive (future internal 1TB SSD) for data. Basically I want the programs (apps) on the 256GB SSD and the data on the 1TB. I'm moving from an 21,5" 4K iMac to a Mac Mini.

Hi, Great video, question, I have 2 imacs that I work on - time to get rid of the old one -when I plug the external HD into the newer Mac ( which is set up) I don't get the migration screen - and now I am at a loss as I don't want to erase anything on that computer - just add my old imac files data - ....help??? what do I do - when I plug the HD into the newer Mac, it ask if I want to use the back up drive to back up the newer computer - can you give me the steps needed to just add the back up to this existing computer? possible? thank you so much!

Great explanation on how to make the data transfer. How would you transfer data from a USB 3 external hard drive to the new 24” iMac via thunderbolt port on the back of the new iMac? What kind of adapter connection would you need? And Would that make the transfer even faster? Thanks!

Hi, I appreciate this video! I currently have an old 2013 MacBook Air, and just got a new 2020 MacBook Pro. At the time of seeing up the new MB, I "skipped" the migrate section b/c I did complete the backup from the Air. Now that I have the Time Machine backup on my external hard drive - how do I proceed with the migration onto the new MB if I've already passed by the "migration" section?

Great video! I've already set up my new iMac (Migration Assistant was going to take too long) so that I could use it. So now with the old Mac's data on an external drive would I still go through Migration Assistant on the new iMac to transfer the data?

Thanks for the great video. On my new Mac, I skipped the initial transfer data step and went directly to creating a user name, password and home file. I then stopped. Can I still use Time Machine and have a duplicate of my old Mac, or should I restore back to factory settings and start over? Thank you.

What should I do if it is not a new mac? So I have this time capsule data from my MBpro and I want to move if to my MBair. I didn't know before that I could migrate all my data to the MBAir, so I already used it for couple months, it has my Apple id, some new data (which I backed up to my timecapsule). So what should I do?

Does it have to be through an external hard drive? One of the options was mac to mac through wi-fi... wouldn't that work the same?

I’ve never done it that way. But I don’t see why not. It will take much longer though depending how much info you have and how fast the wifi is

Hopefully I heard you correctly. I have a time machine back up on my old IMac all the way back to 2006. I want to use that backup and only download the last backup to to new iMac . Can I do that? Then on the new iMac after the migration , I want to buy a larger size time machine.

Liked and subscribed. But what do I do if I have installed an SSD on a 2012 Macbook, upgraded it to Catalina from Mountain Lion and am not trying to import just my music and videos? It tells me it cannot import the library (from the old drive) because it is too old.

Hi! just wondering, what if I have this Backup and Im upgrading my MBA to Catalina and which one should go first, im a bit confused here as to which part is going to be installed. Like do I have to install my Catalina first? then whats next? I want to transfer my files and settings from my Old OS to new OS with the same device.

The more difficult of one of two ways. Just use migration assistant instead and save yourself the headache.

Very good explanation. If I may can you answer 2 questions for me? I have been using a 2 terabyte external hard drive to back up my pro for several months. Should I delete all of these backups and back up once again so there is only one backup on the external before using time machine to migrate or can I use it with all of the existent backups I made previously? And lastly, should I start up the new MacBook air I just purchased and see if it needs any software updates prior to starting the migration? Thanks for your help.

Time machine will automatically delete oldest backup when it needs space. So you don’t have to delete anything. And you don’t have to update the new Mac before migration. You can do it after

i have a new mac air but i don't get that opening routine - i just type in my password and it opens - no messages no language request - i guess someone set that up already but i can't find any prompt to download from my lacie external drive although it's icon is there

So if I wanted to run my old 2013 imac from an external drive, if I added the OS to the external drive I would have everything ready if Id used it as a time machine back up too?
