How to Travel with / Transport Reptiles in Your Car

Here's how I safely bring my snakes, lizards, toads, and turtles when traveling both short and long distances. Of course, this isn't an enclosure that they can stay in once at the arriving location for a very long time, but I found this is the best way to ensure they stay unharmed during the ride.
(I also feel like I should add a disclaimer that I have no idea what the regulations are when bringing reptiles on planes, trains or public transport, this is just what I do in my own car lol).

For heat, we use socks filled with rice and put them in the microwave for a couple of minutes. They are not too hot, and the snakes will curl around them. Dry beans/peas work well too, I think they need to be heated longer, but can hold heat longer. Then there is always the heat vents in the car.

Another thing I've found helpful when transporting my crestie is an insulated polystryrene box. You can buy them pretty cheap off amazon. They help keep the temperatures stable if you're travelling in hot/cold weather and limit the reptile's visibility. I just put my boy in a deli cup, poke some air holes in both the cup lid and the polystyrene lid then put the cup in the box and we're ready to go! It works a charm. Keeps him warm/cool and calm (because of the dark). He's been on many train/bus/car journeys this way and still has his tail (for those of you who know cresties then that says something).

I was thinking about this subject today if I get a pet corn snake, which I would name Lotus. I know everything about keeping and letting a corn snake be happy. I'm only twelve-years-old though, so my dad thinks that if I get a snake it will 'replace the family dog.' That's a little silly I think.
@americanpaint1814
@americanpaint1814 6 лет назад
didapt gaming Yeah, I think that is pretty silly. I have two snakes of my own, and nobody else in the family gives any interest towards them beside me. However, dogs require more attention and love so I can assure your dad that your corn snake would most likely not steal the spotlight.

I asked my vet the same question and she recommended an appropriately sized cooler. Then, put some warm water in a bottle then wrap the bottle with a towel. It will keep a constant temperature in the cooler (even on extremely cold/hot days) and have a thing to warm up with if need be.

Thank you so much for this video! I’m a college student and I go to school 4-5 hours away from my hometown and I also have a crestie. I put her in a cricket carrier that’s like a half gallon with some of her substrate and wet moss. I keep a spray bottle next to me and get it wet again when it gets dry. Usually I wrap whatever coat I have around her box and set it near the vent on the floor, that way it doesn’t slide around.

Thank you for making this! I'm moving across country within maybe 2-3 years (California to New Hampshire). And besides what I already own(a retic, a ball python, a Kenyan sand boa, a Pueblan milksnake, a hognose, 3 leopard geckos, 2 crested geckos, a chameleon, a neon tree dragon, a tarantula, and some fish) i plan on getting a lot more which will require me to play Tetris with bins. This gave me an idea on how I'm gonna do it. It's going to be a long drive and I'll probably just buy a bunch of snapping bins like what I keep a few of my animals in. Wish me luck lol

My leopard gecko was from a locally owned pet store that gave you a mini "pet carrier" if you purchased geckos or hermit crabs, baby beardies, etc. Anyways, I kept mine and later down the road, I was moving into a dorm that didn't allow pets or have the proper space for my gecko's set up so my boyfriend offered to take her in. On the way there, I put her in the mini carrier and, as I was driving, I look over to see her resting on the top of the passenger side seat. Like, on the headrest. I nearly caused a crash because I did a double take and almost slammed the breaks. So here I am, trying to look at the road and trying to snatch a gecko with her little claws hooked into the fabric. She'd managed to open one of the ends where the flaps folded over themselves to close and decided to go on an adventure. Scariest moment of my entire life.

unrelated to moving but you said that corn snakes can get through really small holes and it reminded me of my very first starter snake, one day I woke up and she was nowhere to be seen in her tank so I freak out and start looking for her, only to realize there is a HOLE in my literal floor about an inch across, which she most definitely slipped her body through during the night time escape. I'm considering moving across the country in a year or two and I've been trying to determine what the best way to transport my herps would be, considering it would be a three to four day drive. At first I thought about just shipping them like breeders do, but theres the chance they could show up before I do, and while i do have someone they could be delivered to, they would just end up staying in their boxes until I get there. Also, if they're going to be shipped by a ground company, I really dont see the difference between having someone else drive them and driving them myself. And that way I could make sure they get water when I stop at night. Any thoughts or suggestions?

@papercrow8599
@papercrow8599 6 лет назад
well with turtles esspecially you would need to watch out that their container is rather flat and not too big, so they do not get turned on their back. This is just a personal idea, no idea if that...can work, but you could technically wrap paper towel around their shells (basically make them a coat) Otherwise, yeah, lots of substrate, so nothing can happen. Flat container is the most important though If it's a very long drive you can put water in it, not enough so it can drown

Bit off topic of the video, but I have a question for you man. I have Eco Earth soil, and it's keeping my humidity to around 45% to 50% on the cool side, warm side getting down to 40%. I have a mesh screen top, and use a ceramic heater for heat from above and a UTH, as well as an LED light for the day cycle. How can I hold more humidity in? Should I just cut a towel to size for the top and between the bulb enclosures?
@GoHerping
@GoHerping 6 лет назад
Replacing the ceramic heat emitter with something like a basking bulb (assuming you don't need it on at night) will increase it a lot, as CHE dry out enclosures quite a bit. Sometimes, I lay plastic or damp rags on about half of the screened top to keep more moisture in the enclosure (just make sure it's far enough away from heat sources to avoid any fires...

look in the trunk of your car under where you would keep a spare tire for the dead rat. My grandma had the same incident happen to her and thats where she found it

I have a bearded dragon and we are doing a cross-country move (approximately 4 days of 5 hour drives). How would you recommend I take my beardie with me?

well if you plan on buying something (you obviously should decide on what you are buying before hand), bring an adequate container for it. Depending on the temperature you might want to get heatpacks, as Alex said.

I’m moving overseas and I have a leopard gecko. I’ve seen lots of informational videos on how to move with them via car but I feel lost when it comes to the traveling with them through airplanes. I’m moving to a place where I have to take a plane flight to get there and as result my gecko is being transported in the “ pet luggage” area of the plane. This I’m not worried about that but more of how to set up his tank and where I will meet and leave him etc. I would highly appreciate if anyone could give me any tips 😭
