Looks like a neat product - but wondering if I can replace the GFCI outlet in my garage with this one and swap out the breaker feeding that GFCI outlet with the breaker shown at 3:10 into the video? Would appreciate a link to that breaker (I believe our panel and sub-panel are manufactured by Square-D ). Thanks for another quick and informative video.👍

SqD makes two series residential panels, QO and Home Line. QO is a 3/4" thick breaker and HL is 1" thick. You need to purchase the correct GFCI breaker for your series. Also, 15a for 14 guage or 20a for 12 guage wire.

If you use those adapters correctly and remove the cover plate and install them with a screw like you're supposed to they work perfectly. Also what do you mean heavy duty use you should never pull more than 20 amps from a wall receptacles if theare rated at 20 amps. If it's continuous 17.5 amps.

@@andrewt9204 My old house had several plastic boxes that were cracked where the screw holes are. I got really good at getting them out of the wall to replace them with a Smartbox (has screws on the inside for mounting to a stud) without damaging any drywall. Trick is to get the box off the stud by using a prybar between the box and stud and then use needle nose pliers or a screwdriver to push the nails off the box and let them drop behind the wall. Then the box will come right out with no drywall damage at all. It may be necessary to push the box into the wall so the edge clears the drywall before prying.

@@brianleeper5737 An echo: a Smartbox (MSB1G and MSB2G) is a superior solution for many 'old work' applications. They can be much sturdier than boxes with wings. Either way, I could see this being useful for cramped boxes also. Granted, it's not meant for residential, but even the price doesn't seem that bad when you consider a double recep 4" steel face plate is like $4-$5 now-a-days and 2 high-quality or hospital grade receps are like $10 each.

@@SilverCymbal Regular receptacles last as well, I built my house 37 years ago and I have never had to change a receptacle or switch and they are still rock solid.

Who knows, maybe. This is one of those products that the feel of it is amazing. Sounds silly, but we all know the feeling of a loose outlet and seeing a plug barely stay in. These have the tension set perfectly and while each insertion won't cure sadness, it's certainly a small joy in a DIY'rs day.

Is there a GFCI version?

Sadly no, you would have to use a GFCI breaker behind it if you need that.

Those US outlets (and wire and fuse boxes) always look so flimsy and unorganized compared to what we have in The Netherlands

US uses 110V power for most residential circuits. 220V is for high power devices like AC, dryers & stoves. Europe uses 220V for all. 110V is far less dangerous; it won’t kill you, 220V will. Hence a lot of DIYers in the US do 110V electrical work, which is not going to look pro. And the wiring & circuits can be smaller too.
@mp-xt2rg
@mp-xt2rg Год назад
@@Bonnev-jt8hl220 circuits would be smaller for the same power delivery. So 120 circuits need to be larger to deliver the same amount of power. Almost everyone in the use has 200amp service. So the total power available is higher than most European homes and businesses for that matter. It's surprising to see houses over the pond that have less electrical capacity than the circuit dedicated to just charging my car. Heck my oven requires 30amps at 240.

It all depends on the installer and use case. If a higher duty is needed a higher duty will be installed. It also depends on how much time, skill, or pride the installer takes to hook up and route the wires.

I have a cheaper and easier way! I just plug outlet strips into one another and WALLAH! I have all the plugs I need! But then you need extension cords but they are cheap at Walmart. My old house has only like 1 plug per room and the dumb things do not even hold plugs tight so I have to wiggle them to work. My fuse box used to be a hassle until I put in high enough amp fuses and now I do not have to go to the basement to change them all the time.

Looks like a design from the 1980's. Today's design should have isolated screw terminals or levers to lock for straight wire. Bending the wire around a screw is a bad design!

Two hospital industrial grade outlets and a double gang box cost more than this and they are not rock solid when done. Do what you want, im just saying these are different.

Sure, and buy hospital grade plugs, and enjoy them being loose after a couple of tough plugs here and there and of course cut your wall open, and add 3 more junction wires.

Doing it the traditional way isn't always the only way to do it right. If one doesn't mind the higher cost and surface mount, this is actually a superior design. These aren't some cheap gadget from China, they are high grade outlets from a well known company (Leviton). They currently only sell these in industrial grade and hospital grade.
