NO MORE hassle trying to install or wire a 3 way lightswitch. Enjoy this WIRELESS 5 way switch without running new wires between floor & ceilings and mounts anywhere. Home automation just got easy, even off grid! In this video I am using the Lutron Caseta system along with some cool accessories.
Nothing in this video is sponsored. I have been using these for years.

We have been heavy into Lutron switches in our house for quite some time. The Cassera line of switches is fabulous and we have done a number of replacement three-way, lighting applications, using exactly what you have listed. For example, in our kitchen, when our kitchen was revamped. The contractor installed, undercabinet lighting, and only put one switch in place to control it. I swapped that switch out for a Cossetta and added the little small switches in a number of different locations mounted straight on the surface of the tile backsplash. No drilling nothing I just used self stick automobile grade tape to mount them up. They are fabulous. We also have Lutron switches for our ceiling fans that allow us to control the fan speed without having to pull a chain or flip a switch on the fan itself. Lou Tron products are fabulous.

That’s what I was thinking. They have like flat plates you can just stick to the wall with the portable controller. I have smart lights in my bathroom and hate where the switch is. I want to make it by the other door. What other wall switches don’t need wiring if they can just be paired with smart lights if that makes sense? Like Hue has the button one but was looking for something to look a little more traditional if that makes sense and if they’re connecting to the lights over WiFi they don’t need any wiring I believe.

I outfitted our last house with a lot of these and it made some lighting configurations VERY easy. Lutron has the best HomeKit compatible switches, in my opinion. They just released a few new style switches, too. The Claro and Diva rocker switches look similar to normal large rectangular switches but have smart functionality. The main issue I have with smart switches is how much money you end up dropping if you install a lot of them…

Really great videos on your channel, and welcome to New Hampshire! You may already know, but Leviton has a similar set up, and they have a switch that does not require a neutral wire, which can help out in a lot of situations. They also have the additional wireless switches that you can install anywhere and pair with the wired one. Probably not quite as nice as Lutron, but works well.

I love home automation systems such as these. My house is controlled with Insteon devices I installed slowly over time, perhaps through as many as 20 years. A couple of downsides have worried me: 1) Selling the house may require some new owner (or even pre-sale agent) education; 2) What happens if the device manufacturer disappears (ala Insteon)? First world problems & the hazards of convenience.

Kasa and Tappo (from TP-Link) are great as well. No need for a hub, they have controllers built into the devices (including bulbs), but you do need to have a strong wi-fi signal. I've got them for my garage and porch lights, with my router at the other end of the house. It can be finiky to setup, but price is great and I get to have multiple colours for the front of the house to match the seasons/holiday themes!

This is what we have, and we use Alexa routines to automate some of the Kasa switches (outside lights, etc). However, Kasa does not offer one of these remote switches. They must be hard wired. :-( This is a huge missed opportunity.

Have been using Meross light switches, indoor and outdoor outlets, lamp, garage door opener switch. No "bridge" required, just network. They also do schedules and scenes, auto-off after a length of time, and integrations (using Google Home I have an outlet go on when my Chromecast goes on). Not too expensive. Works well. Biggest issue might be a network disconnect - rare! - just power cycle the device to reconnect. Very rare, though.

I had originally bought a couple TP-Link smart switches but then determined that I don't have a neutral on my switches since my wiring is pretty old. I bought a Feit switch from Costco which does the same thing basically but without all the extra bells and whistles and you don't need a neutral. I just wanted a switch close to the outside door so I didn't track dirt and snow into the kitchen when coming in and out of the garage. This switch was pretty cheap at $20 Canadian.

I did a similar thing with my basement where I replaced the main basement switch at the top of the stairs with one that has a remote. I wanted to be able to turn the main basement lights on so I could see going down/up the stairs and where I'm going in the basement, and then be able to turn those main lights off when I reach the room that I use as a workroom that runs on a separate line and where I tend to spend many hours in. I attached the remote outside the work room and now can control the main lights at either end. I got the switch and remoter from Home Depot for around $30.

Great video! I got one of these recently but hadn't gotten around to making a video yet. I have a couple things to add. I'm not sure if you mentioned it but you can just pair the remote with the switch and forgo the smart hub. This makes it a great solution for someone who isn't tech savvy. Considering the price of wire and potentially labor, this can be a relatively cheap solution for adding a 3 way. Another big advantage of these is that you can get switches that don't require a neutral. They can be hard to identify but the Lutron Caseta Diva dimmers fit the bill. If you don't want dimming and want no neutral, the model you want is PD-5WS-DV. Unfortunately it is an expensive switch but probably still cheaper than wire and labor for many.

I have an end switch for a total of 3 switches with that end one dead (no wires attached) in an old home. I think it used to be part of a 3 way because it’s at the bottom of the stairs and the hall light (I’m guessing) was part of that. I cannot install wiring to make the current dead switch part of a 3 way. My only way of currently lighting the upstairs hall light is through its upstairs switch. Could I replace the upstairs switch like shown and simply add an additional remote switch to the downstairs bank of 3 with the one currently now dead working to light the upstairs hallway light.

His main reason was the buttons, they were too mushy. I have this system and he's right, but I'm not that picky, and I don't even use the switches, i use google commands. I think another reason was the the 3 way switches have to be battery. Again, just don't use them, leave them for guests/wife approval factor, and just use google. It's a rock solid system since it's on it's own frequency and the hub can be hardwired via ethernet.

I currently have a Wi-Fi power strip that I control via an iPhone and iPad, however I’d love to also be able to add a wall switch, as I use the power strip to plug in two free standing lamps in my living room. I am heavily invested in the Kasa system and want to add some "three-way" light switches in my home where I do not have three-way wiring. TP-Link does not currently offer anything like this, so I am going to have to look into layering over a Lutron system. What if you don't have a neutral in your switch box. As a 40 year electrician, I've seen many circuits that have what's called a "switch loop", where the hot is run into a light fixture box with only one wire going to the switch box. The current is sent to the switch via the black and returned to the light via the white wire. Would this work in that case?

Yes. They are too expensive to put all over but for specific lights, fans they give you a lot of flexibility and remote control

Question: how did you get that footage from inside the wall? 😲

I am lucky that one section of wall is open behind it. No special tricks, it was fun to see what it looks like

My single pole light switch has no neutral, and there is no neutral wire available. Is there a solution for me?

Yes, a very nice surprise if if you are controlling lights only. The Lutron light module does not require a neutral. I shoiuld have been more clear, so this one: amzn.to/3jOioPt just uses two hots and a ground like a reg switch. This is a starter kit that includes that version: amzn.to/3YqPPq8

Google Hub plus smart lightbulbs = same thing for half the price and controlled by voice.

In theory this sounds great and easy, I would just do it via wiring and stand alone devices. No guarantee what you have now will be available later, or that software will be supported down the road. Or the complexities that come with said issues if you do sell at some point. I guess it is minimized if you are only doing one switch, but to have a whole house with this stuff seems like a headache later. Or a liability when you go to sell.

I agree that often tech built into a house can be a big issue down the road. Thats what scares me about a lot of the amazon no-name versions of these. Lutron has been selling this line for about 5 years now and seems to be going very strong and they are a prety recognized brand. I won't be using them for every switch but for some the remote stuff will be really helpful.
