Hi everyone! Here's an update on the Maple nursery trees and seedling that I cut up back in May. This will be their second round of cuttings, so you'll see me adjusting the branches to fit the design I have in mind. You'll also see me with a hammer and chisel! Let's get creative!

Very interesting demonstration . I think you should also acknowledge the person who is doing the camera work. Challenging work but a good job. 🎉

One thing I've always kept in mind. Nature. Animals eat the bottom the plant shoots up, if the eat the top it bushes out of the bottom.

I like what you do with ordinary stock from the big box stores, you make it look easy enough for a Newby to try.

I am not a creative person and I struggle a lot with vision but I've still decided to take up bonsai for some reason haha. I'm killing trees left and right and styling progression is very slow but I'm enjoying myself and that's what matters. I'll keep going and will improve some day!

That's now I started too! I killed a lot of trees when I first started doing bonsai, but I learned a lot through trial and error. Here I am today! I encourage you to keep going and keep me updated on your progress :)

Some say that’s the only way to learn bonsai properly I believe that’s true but watching videos of the same species of people who know what they’re doing can help guide you immensely. I used to prune my roots right back and they died every time. Now I only prune what I don’t need and if it’s a lot I’ll leave them for next repot. Sometimes by then the roots I was going to remove look good now anyway

Thank you for the demo. A quick question, for the third maple, the truck and primary branches almost do not taper (while it is true that the trunk is thicker than the branches). Is that a consideration for you and how would you deal with that as this bonsai matures? Thanks.
@bonsaiheirloom
@bonsaiheirloom 10 месяцев назад
It tapers some, but not very much…and then start tapering above the first branches. It is OK if it is not obviously counter to what occurs in nature. This is pretty much the same with most landscaping trees.

would you use any sealant for the breaking points on the second tree?
@bonsaiheirloom
@bonsaiheirloom 11 месяцев назад
Hi there! No, I don't use sealant on my trees because I prefer the natural look. My goal is for my trees to emulate nature. Thanks for watching!

@bonsaiheirloom

I have used slow release fertilizer, chicken manure pellets, now I use fish and kelp per instruction once a week. Will reduce to every other week when cooler, and stop all together for about three months in the winter.

The problem I have with nursery stock is the trees are often 2 to 3 feet tall before the first branch. I usually have to cut it off and get new branches to form lower down. Such a long process and a long wait before I can actually do anything with the tree. Any suggestions?
@bonsaiheirloom
@bonsaiheirloom 10 месяцев назад
You can force the bottom to branch out by cutting the truck to about 60% of the final bonsai height. Select one of the top branches to grow tall and thick and cut it again. It may be easier for me to do a video and show you how the tree develops over time.
