I've had two author friends who stopped doing some of the community things with fans, taking them for granted. I know because two or three of their fans have now come over to reading more of my books. And I often post on social media to thank anyone who has bought my work. Even that kind of post has brought me more sales because the reader wanted to be a part of the "thanked" group. Yes, people are weird.
Everyone wants to be acknowledged and feel like they belong to something so that makes sense to me! Good lesson there from your friends about turning your back on your audience. Their loss is your gain!
