There's a right and a wrong way to optimize your FSX Settings. Froogle shows you the right way to do it. FACEBOOK : frooglesim TWITTER : froogle LIVESTREAMS: twitch.tv/frooglepete
Thank you very much for sharing this knowledge. I have just done some tweaking as you showed and managed to raise my average FPS from 16 to 23.5. Thank you again! Cheers, -Aviator
Froogle You say to do these tests with a frame limiter off, which is correct, but I noticed your frame rates are consistently around 30. Do you have VSYNC set to 1/2 refresh rate in your video driver setting? If so that essentially will do the same thing.as a fame rate limiter. (Which is what you want normally to get smooth graphics.) If though you are checking the effects of tweaks to actual system performance, then you should also make sure VSYNC is off as well. This will give you the actual FPS effect a tweak has.
Dude, Xtreme FSX has completely changed my simming experience. I've been having issues with ASN causing major lag in frame rates whenever there was even a small amount of weather. Xtreme FSX fixed all of the little problems and I now get amazing performance out of my sim. Thanks for that suggestion.
Thanks again Froog! Coming back into FSX after being with X-Plane 10 for a while has been tough because I have not been able to get FSX to run well like it used to on my system. With the info presented in your video I can take a more scientific and analytical approach to my testing. In this kind of tweaking benchmarking is a must. Its good to get hard data like this. It helps me feel like I am not in the dark with my tweaks. And oh yeah the test scenario that you described is very intuitive. A very good way to keep the test environment consistent which is essential to experimentation.
Thank you Pete! I am now at 39 FPS - This really makes so much sense to work through the tweaks, weeding out those that did not really add a benefit (at least on my machine) I tended to add tweaks all at once because someone said this, and that worked... Like Affinity Mask, I was not really comfortable adding it, I have added to my config and it really did help.. thanks and have a good week :)
+Nitin Rosh I'm sorry I can't help you - there could be any number of reasons for this. I would suggest you check post on a forum like Mutley's hangar and ask for support there.
if everyone had ever did what you recommended in the video, we would have saved a lot of wasted hours tweaking fsx and deal with every one cfg's. After i sat for many hours in front of my pc with fraps and the way froogle sawed i ended up with a nice smooth and hope crashless fsx!! thank you very much sir!!!
i've been simming now for about 13 years. i'm 'expert' ( instrument) level. in addition to having done a hefty' amount of 'outside' study, reading, studying, etc... on flying, procedures, IFR, charts, use of checklists and cockpit instrument understanding. probably have about 8 thousand hours since 2002. must say, after watching all this, and all the "computer" tasking and 'tweaking', changing of .CFG files, this and that, opening this, downloading that, and on, and on, and on...... in my estimation, all this, is actually more arduous, boring and time consuming, than...."Flying the actual god damn airplane itself. holy crap...... i got dizzy and utterly disinterested at about 2 minutes in, with all the extraneous, endless "Shit'...that optimally running a Flight Sim now, seems to demand of you, to 'have a good experience' anymore? whew..... just don't know if i'd want to undertake all that computer 'busy-work' before i could 'have fun' flying an aircraft in FSX.
I agree wasting hundreds of hours to download search and adjust adjust adjust tweak tweak tweak. I have done this hamster wheel madness since buying FSX 7 years ago but no more. I have hundreds of scenery and planes for fs9 and with some converted FSX ground textures in FS9 it looks and performs good too with no tweaking and aggravation. I have been doing FS since 1998 never before not even FS 2000 caused me so much aggravation as FSX. I have the sim but use FS9 mainly in my opinion FSX is a sim for millionaires who can afford to constantly throw large sums of money into new hardware every 2 years
I've been tweaking a lot...all the standard tweaks you can find on internet and the ones that Froogle also mentions are fine when you use a CPU up to an i5 Core 4th generation. I'm using an i7 4790K and find that settings like BUFFERPOOLS Poolsize=0 are useless. This is supposed to let your GPU do the work...instead of the CPU. FSX wasn't designed like that, so I doubt the real effect of that. Second: Why if you have an i7 like mine and your CPU does only 35%, would you let your GPU do some thing? It has room do to more. My advice for i7 4th Gen., use just this: Have your display sliders INSIDE FSX to the MAX or a bit less extreme. Turn off all trafic and shadow effects on ground, plane and stuff like that. Maybe change that later, when happy. The adjust FSX.cfg: [JOBSCHEDULER] AffinityMask=84 or other numbers ( i doubt this one too,but 84 doesn't harm) [Main] Fiber_Frame_Time_Fraction=.10 (reduces load time of graphics) [Display] UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=30 WideViewAspect=True [GRAPHICS] Highmemfix=1 ForcedWindowedVSync=1 TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=2048 remark: 4096= HD quality but 2048 is just as good. Never ever touch the sliders again INSIDE FSX. Froogle is right. For further tweaking only use the NVIDIA configuration screen for 3D applications. Right click on your Geforce Experience button and open the config screen. Go to Program settings for 3d applications and find FSX.exe. Then read what NVIDIA config screen explains to you and experiment with the settings. Try it with scenery like DUBAI and a PMDG 777 if you have it. The 737-800 NGX is a piece of cake for an i7 core CPU 4th gen. Even at Innsbruck scenery with Active sky Next and Rex4 for example. I only have trouble with a PMDG 777-300 flying low over Manhattan in New York X scenery :) Then I get Out of memory.
Nice idea - also you really do not need a system over £800 really for FSX, after using Froogle's great method I'm running a £600 PC in the same scenario on the video at an average of 39fps (just saying for those of you keen on saving money ;D )
I have 2 systems in different locations running FSX plus a raft of add-ons - an i5 4670K @ 4.4GHz with 8GB RAM and a 2GB GTX670 which I built last year, plus an E8400 Core 2 Duo @ 3.6GHz with 4GB RAM and a 1GB HD5850 which I built 5 years ago. The i5 system uses a 1980x1080 monitor and the E8400 uses a 1680x1050. I've tweaked both systems as best I could using online guides and forums, appreciating that each system will benefit from different tweaks due to different processors, etc. I also limited both systems to 30FPS. Anyway, it always impresses me how well the 5 year old E8400 performs, hanging on in there at mid-high 20s FPS-wise. It does get rather warm though...
yea but 3.6ghz 4.4 ghz is pretty good though..I'm talking something @2.5ghz, I'm getting 8 to 10 fps in 737 ngx cockpit..with just bit tweaking, I'm trying to get to 11 fps min in cockpit or atleast 9 fps
Imagine the average person going into the store, picking up FSX and say, "let me try this". Boy...are they in for a big surprise! Nice video for veterans though!
hey Frooglesim just watch your video and i see you having problems with Bufferpools. on my machine it works fine without problems and i see that you add capital P on ( userPools ) when it should had be ( userpools ). tip use Poolsize=0. with capital P instead of userpools.
I may be incorrect but I see a difference in the spelling in the Bufferpool tweak addition as follows......UsePools=0 vs Usepools=0, which may account for the game not responding correctly.
Hi Froogle. I think BP=0 tweak works better with a target frame rate of 30. Unlimited causes FSX to crash. I had problems combining BP=0 with Unlimited fps but no probs with 30. If Unlimited is preferred then a BP should be set inside cfg. You know the rest. Congrats on your tremendous work. Cheers from Greece.
Well, running Eyefinity with three 27" monitors I get a steady 60.2 fps with v-sync (I can get higher fps, but since I never drop under 59 fps I prefere good average), all I used was the Affinity mask 84 and then I let the graphic card work rather than FSX itself leaving most settings at full pretty much. like he said, it's different from computer to computer...
Could you create video about the correct scenery order and what it does exactly? For Example I have ORBX called openLC Europe and FTX EU Ireland on top of the ftx global of course but I dont know whats the realtion between LC Europe and EU Ireland. If there is a conflict or no etc. + I would like to know if I can combine it with for example free scenery mesh if it improves quality overall or I should not use freeware sceneries when I have there some payware scenery.
I did enjoy the 'Affinity Mask' tweak and your consistent procedure. I will have to look into that. BTW what are your thoughts on the 'FSX Booster 2013? Just a 'note'... When you did the 'Buffer Pools' tweak, and checked it for the cause of possible instability, you mistakenly typed 'BufferPools=0' instead of 'Bufferpools=0'... I'm strongly suspicious that the 'command' should reflect a lower case 'p' for pools instead of the upper case 'P' that you typed. Wonder if that'll make a difference...?
I have used most of the 'boosters'. They invariably add stuff into the sim to try to boost it which you have little to no control over. When those things start to conflict with add ons, you're screwed. I also found that when I went to remove such tools they had done strange things to my scenery libraries which required a lot of work to fix, it's almost like they want to put the sim back into a really bad state when you stop using them to provide a false perception of just how good they are.
I used Kosta's setting in nVidia Inspector (and applied them) and turned off AA in FSX, but I see no AA effect and I get tearing. Does this mean the nVidia Inspector profile has not been loaded and applied correctly? I have the default nVidia Control Panel installed (which I always used) and see my old values still there after applying Kosta's in Inspector - I would have thought his settings would be reflected in the nVidia Control Panel? Hence I am quite confused as to whether doing anything in Inspector is working????
I tend to set Nvidia inspector up, without frame rate locks, and leave it, just to focus on the sim changes. Once you have the sim where you want it, you can repeat this process and mess around with nvidia inspector settings to see their effects on performance.
It's also not repeatable. You can't guarantee on every single run through that you will change the view at the same rate, angles etc etc every single test, and thus it will invariably screw with the results. If you are going to follow a scientific approach to measurement then you have to follow pure and repeatable steps.
Yeah, I'm sure I got the spelling or case wrong - the point remains though, remove something if you break something, and only ever do one thing at a time.
Hey guys. I have an autogen poping issue. I understand that is a thing in FSX however I have constant popping as close as 200 meters or even less to my aircraft. It is extremely distracting and renders the game unplayable. This happens on a untoched as well as a tweaked version of FSX. Any ideas? Cheers.
i recently got a new pc with a gt 740 2gb of gddr5,4gb ram 1333hmz,and a amd fx -6300 unlocked of course and my avg fps is 40-55, well i added a free scenery from GAP(greek aiports project) for macedonia LGTS and when i reach the airport i have 19-20 fps barely..should i tweak my fsx and solve it or there's another solution?if there's one..
hi i have already this tweak but it dosnt make me feel good with the bad scenery loading...is that normal in fsx???i cant see the city buldings till i get very close to them!!....just like yours??....excuse my english it isnt good lol.
I used to use that, but in the long term it didn't work out for me. It injects a lot into FSX outside of simple fsx.cfg changes and I found it to be very limiting.
I still cant squeeze more than 10 fps at large city areas like New York or Fly Tampa's Kai Tak. I have i5 2500K, gtx 960 4gb, 8gb of ram, running W7. I am not saying that I have super PC but it should give me more fps. I'am using bufferpools, highmemfix and affinitymask nothing helped much :(
hi frooglesim, very nice done! I just have one question! I am currently using an old PC with Windows XP, 1GB RAM and 3,06Ghz, I know that sounds really poor but I'm spending all my money on flying lessons! I have set my FSX settings quiet low to fly with an average frame level of 18-20FPS. Would you recommend me to set them up for tweaking or shall I just leave them ? Greetings and keep the blue side up ;-) Achim
Hi Pete. I do not know did you notice with your second tweak [BUFFERPOOLS] Usepools=0 you wrote in fsx cfg UsePools=0 maybe that was problem you could not make next test. But away Thanks for your help how improve FSX.
Hey guys I am only getting around 16 fps is this normal? Also I do not have any addon or did any tweaks. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3632QM CPU @ 2.20GHz 8GB Ram Nvidia GT 640M LE
Froogle, I have a triple monitor setup using an Nvidia GTX760 card. I am using Nvidia's surround software to span all three monitors. This setup has been working for well for some time, except for one thing. In FXS my gauges take all of the screen such that I cannot see the outside unless I pan up, then I cannot see the guages, unless I pan down. I see your setup and others, where outside and guages are visible all at once. How can I setup to see more visuals in FSX?
Hey Froogle. I have some pretty decent fps with the NGX; 20-30 in the cockpit, and 30-70 outside view. But as soon as i get to an addon scenery, it goes down dramaticlly to around 8-15 fps. Is there any kind of scenery tweaking? Thanks.
i have a problem with my i7 8gbram geforcegtx950m. whatever resolution i put or quality, fsx will eventually freeze. will this tweak improve my gameplay? im so frustrated i cant get this working properly!! please give me some help
Buy the steam version. They made it much more stable and it comes with all service packs as it is. They also have a fair amount of aircraft to purchase from the steam store.
Hello fellow! Great video! I've got Intel Core i5 3570k 3.4, 8 gb RAM and GTX 660 ddr5. I don't know the bloody hell get a good performance and quality as well. I've watched vídeos with lower hardware performance better than mine! Any advise?
What's the point of this video? Letting the com go smoothly during the harsh addons or is it just improving some fps? I don't really get it what the tweaks are for
+유재혁 By spreading support apps onto another computer you free up processing power on the main computer. That can result in higher FPS, but it also delivers a number of other benefits such as being able to run the sim in full screen mode but still have access to interact with other apps without having to alt-tab or pause.
Thank you!!!! Very useful testing procedure - and very eloquently done! I've added a link to this video in the DFX10 Fixer :"HowTo" Guide: www.nzfsim.org/index.php?dsp=downloads&f_sort=fixer Adam.
my fsx steam edition is showing on my monitor (i have 2 that is not equaly big) like it is 4 times the size of my monitor and the other screen it is a little smaller just goes black what do i do
Good day , do you know how to fix a memory issue , my fsx is crashing , and I get a message saying that my pc ran out of memory , . any advice? ,, thank you

Hi. Is there a video for installing FSX + acceleration on a OS windows 8 or 8.1? I have heard of some fine tuning needed for a possible freeze up. Thank you in advance. Rob
fozzlac Not from me no. Although a lot of people have no problem with Windows 8 and FSX, I have heard too many horror stories to risk putting Windows 8 on one of my machines.
Hi Froogle, I have a problem with FSX that I can't seem to get answered. Maybe you can shed some light on it. FSX runs OK but all the scenery has lots & lots of large black boxes all over. Even when I'm flying a mission flight. Have you heard of this before? I run a lot of Orbx scenery so I unchecked them all and the boxes are still there. I know you are very busy, but I don't know were else to look. Thanks.
+frooglesim Thanks so much for getting back to me so fast. Your the best. And yes Directx 10 was the problem. I did have it on for some time with no problem, but in the last week the problem started. I turned it off and the black boxes are gone. Thanks again. I knew I could count on you.
I am a FSX user but I had to remove and reinstall FSX. Should I firstly add all my Addons (Aerosoft Airbus X, Freeware...) or should I install them after the whole tweaking process?
+frooglesim Should I set my FPS limiter in FSX to unlimited? Is it better to use Addons such as Airbus X to do the benchmarking over default planes, as I will be using it a lot?
It is based on your CPU etc. Here is a link to a handy calculator I found for finding your number. www.gatwick-fsg.org.uk/affinitymask.aspx?SubMenuItem=hardware
Please guys can you help me with some FPS issues, I have : -i5 660 processor -12Gigs of Ram -Nvidia gt610 2GB with all that I am running FSX with 8-12 fps , which is very frustrating, I tried teaking the Afinity mask but nothing diference?
Labied Abderrahim FPS issues are not something that can be resolved through a RU-vid back and forth. I would suggest you follow the steps in this video, clear your config and work through Kostas' tweaking guide measuring the impact of each change.
frooglesim It's really good to hear from you Froogle I really appreciate it, Well at the moment that's what I am doing following Kosta's guide, still running it like 5-11 fps, What I need to know is, what are the tweaks that affect to CPU ? and a little question,Is my rig sufficient enough to run FSX on 25-30FPS. My rig : -i5 660 processor -12Gigs of Ram -Nvidia gt610 2GB
Labied Abderrahim FSX is 8 years old. Compared to when it was released your PC is state of the art so yes it can run it. I don't recall which specific changes are CPU dependent (all of them I suspect) and I think you'd be able to read the document faster than if you wait for me to read it and then type up what I just read. If your performance is that terrible you might also consider deleting FSX and starting over. For hitting 25-30 that's highly dependent on the scenery, aircraft, weather etc. Good luck with your tuning. Please consider also turning to experts on forums for help as RU-vid is not a good medium for troubleshooting and there are usually people on forums with a lot more experience and time than I have.
It varies. I broke my sim with a bunch of plugin tweaks and config tweaks this week - this video was recorded after re-installing. Currently I'm running nVidia Inspector, HighMemFix, WideViewAspect and AffinityMask, and that's it.
Well the video here shows how to make changes and measure their impact on your sim. You'd need to do the research to find non Nvidia tweaks elsewhere but then use this method to measure whether or not on your system they have the desired effect.
Hey froogle, how do you work out the number to use in the fsx.cfg tweak 'affinitymask=14'? You changed yours to '84'. How did you know that this number was better for your computer instead of 14?
It's a binary bit mask. Unfortunately talking you through how to work that out is a bit beyond the scope of a video comment section. There is a handy calculator that can do it for you at www.gatwick-fsg.org.uk/affinitymask.aspx?SubMenuItem=hardware I don't use tweaks at all anymore- just get FSX SE and run it.
