Mouth Breathing in Children Buteyko Educator Patrick McKeown
The physiologic breathing mode in the human being is nasal, regardless of age. Any factor leading to the upper airway (UA) obstruction causes nasal breathing to be replaced by mouth breathing, among which mechanical events, allergic and non allergic inflammatory diseases.
However, even after these mechanical factors are removed, MB continues in most cases due to patient’s mouth breathing habit.
The mouth breathing syndrome is characterized by a set of signs and symptoms, which may be present in subjects who replace an adequate and efficient nasal breathing mode by the mouth for a period equal or superior of six months.

Do you exhale through your mouth or through the nose?
@ButeykoClinicInternational
@ButeykoClinicInternational 3 года назад
@@belt9162 Hi Bel. Here is how the Nose Unblocking Exercise sholud be practiced: 1. Sit up straight, take a small breath in through the nose and let a small breath out. 2. Pinch your nose with your fingers while keeping your mouth closed. Gently node or sway your head until you feel the medium to strong desire to take a breath. 3.Then release your nose, taking a controlled breath in through your nose and out through your nose. Calm your breathing as soon as possible. Wait 30 seconds to one minute and repeat six times daily.

My husband has been stuffed up because of allergic rhinitis his entire life. He has allergic rhinitis. I can’t wait for him to try this. I suffer from Tinnitus. When I did the exercise my ears “popped” and I was dizzy for a minute. Using medications is worse than the ailment! Thank you. Valuable information.
@ButeykoClinicInternational
@ButeykoClinicInternational 3 года назад
Hi, Candace. If you are feeling dizzy go slowly with breath holds and air hunger, do them as long as you feel comfortable. Buteyko exercises are very effective in reducing symptoms of rhinitis and stuffy nose. Try nose washing. It can be very helpful to use 1/2 teaspoon Celtic or Himalayan sea salt in a glass of boiled water which has cool and snort a large volume of the water into each nostril. For severe nasal obstruction - you can use the breath right strips. Also, it would be very useful to wear the MyoTape during sleep. For more information about the MyoTape, please visit: myotape.com/. On this page buteykoclinic.com/buteyko-clinic-online-courses/, you can purchase Buteyko Online Course for Respiratory Issues, Asthma, Rhinitis, High Blood Pressure, Fatigue, Insomnia, Chronic Hyperventilation, Snoring, and Sleep Apnea where you will find exercises suitable to you.

I didn’t get any energy but a bit by bit (and might I say the energy lasted at 20 min best every day) and it was almost 3 weeks before that happened. I had went this ENTIRE pandemic without Covid, but Delta got me. They have already found another variant, Gamma. Each new one is stronger than the last one. Hopefully we made some antibodies while having this, but it’s still no guarantee we won’t catch again. They can’t even guarantee people who are vaccinated that they won’t catch it because these new variants aren’t covered under the “original Covid-19” that started all this. I hope and pray that you get well. I experienced what they call “Covid insomnia” towards the end. It’s been hell! I still can’t taste or smell. Which has made me not want to eat because I can’t taste food. A lot of weird crap happened to me. I started bruising easy since I had it and it’s something that the virus does to your clotting factor and makes your blood “thicker”, hence why so many have died from blood clots. It’s scary really. Never did I ever think this would happen and I was so careful. This new crap says “screw the mask, sanitizer, Lysol, ect… I’m coming in!” I truly hope for your recovery!❤️ best thing I can tell you, find some RU-vid channels, a comfy bed, put a bucket bedside you if you are vomiting, sip on water and Gatorade, eat light when you can, and get you a big bottle of ibuprofen! 2. Keep your mouth closed during and after exercise. If you open your mouth you'll have to start over. 3. Exhale through your nose (recommended) or through your mouth if you must 4. Now hold your breath by pinching your nose 5. Gently move your head back and forth 6. At this point your mouth is closed, you are holding your breath and shaking your head 7. Continue like this until you feel some discomfort and need to breathe 8. At this, leave your nose free and take a deep breath through your nose keeping your mouth closed 9. After taking a deep breath continue breathing more slowly and calmly for a few minutes 10. If necessary, repeat the exercise always keeping your mouth closed Is this the method?

@@littleregrets8810 Pushups help yea. It's really weird! I think it is due to changing the angle your body is at which changes the effect of gravity on your sinuses, combined with the increase of blood flow and other factors of the pushup.

@@uzairFBA To decongest the nose: • Take a normal breath in and out through your nose; • Pinch your nose with your fingers to hold your breath; • As you hold your breath, move your body or gently nod your head up and down; • Hold your breath for as long as you can - until you feel a strong air hunger; • Let go of your nose and breathe through it as calmly as possible. Repeat 6 times with a 30-60 second rest between each repetition. Take care, as this exercise involves holding the breath until a strong air hunger is experienced. It is not suitable for people with high or low blood pressure, anxiety, panic disorder or cardiovascular issues, or during pregnancy. To decongest the nose, the breath hold must be at least 30 seconds to be effective. The exercise also works to shift mucous from lungs and relieve constipation. If nostrils are very narrow, Breathe Right strips or nasal dilator (see: NasalDilator.com) can be advised during sleep.

I would like to share my experience here. I had a totally blocked nose, both nostrils, today. I have had a cold for the last few days and today it was the worst day as far as the nose is concerned. I could not even talk properly, it was so blocked. I tried this exercise, around 10 repetitions. My left nostril got unblocked immediately, after the 1st go. However, the right one remained blocked. Then I saw someone in the comments here mentioned doing some rope jumps (I just did them without the rope) and amazingly, my nose was completely free after a minute. I can breathe more freely now. I guess repetition of this and similar exercises and sports activity will be key. I would really like to carry on in this manner. Thanks for the video. Any views welcome.

Hi Alexander. Thank you for sharing your experience with us! Please also have in mind that the nose will remain blocked or partially blocked until your CP (control pause) is 25 seconds. Nose unblocking exercise is only temporary when CP is less than 20 seconds approx.

Thank you so so much for this you explained everything in such a simple way . My 10 year old daughter has asmha and plays soccer her greatest hurdle has been this she is so competitive and loves playing soccer but she can't keep up with her teammates without having to stop because she starts feeling like she can't breathe its a helpless feeling . She cryes becuase she even though she pushes herself so much and her asmha doesn't seem to get better. Im looking for exercises, medicine, or devices that can help her improve or hopefully someday eliminate her asmha.

Hi Gerry. On this page oxygenadvantage.com/asthma/, you will find information about exercise-induced asthma and a video showing an exercise tailored to stopping asthma attacks. These articles buteykoclinic.com/asthma/ and buteykoclinic.com/sports-performance/ are very useful too. On this page, you can find a course specifically designed for respiratory issues and asthma: buteykoclinic.com/buteyko-clinic-online-courses/. Also, here you can find more exercise for children: buteykoclinic.com/buteykochildren/. Your daughter should practice Exercise Many Small Breath Holds for 10 minutes by six times daily. It's a good start. She should keep her mouth closed all the time day and night (myotape.com). As she feels better with a higher CP, she can practice reducing her breathing. The benefit of practicing Many Small Breath Holds is that they are non-stressful, gentle, and will improve breathing. Taping mouth helps, please visit myotape.com.

I used to have terrible asthma that ended up in hospitalisations & long steriod treatment. I read about nutrition & its incredibly helped. 1) Filter your water. Use water in the day that was filtered overnight or after it has settled for hours. Chlorine is a big trigger factor. I use simple jug filter & it helps! 2) See if you can cut out bread completely. If she has to eat some, then buy organic, but consume much less. The stuff in wheat is a huge trigger for asthma. 3) Completely reduce milk & cheese. If she has to use, again, it needs to be quite minimal & organic. Definitely, not to use any milk/cheese/bread for night time or early morning. 4) Sugar!!! Simply cut out sugar. I love my pudding, so i use home baked cakes but use molases or dark brown cane sugar. This way, your daughter shall not completely miss out on nyumm nyumm cakes. 5) Finally, deep breathing exercises 1st thing before getting out of bed & last exercise before night sleep. I still use inhalers as needed but its down from 8 puffs a day to 1/2. Its critical that she has the correct inhaler prescribed.! It took the asthma nurse 6 years to get me the appropriate medication. I have not been hospitalised for this condition now for many years, since i started doing the above. The principle is, any food/drink that cloggs up the breathing system makes it worse for asthma. No cigarrate smoke/fizzy drinks/unhealthy vegetable fats etc. Each person is different, so do your research for her. Also Dr Eric Berg, on youtube is Excellent on this. Ps. I have no association in anyway with him. Only sharing what has helped. Finally thanks Mayo for posting this breathing technique for blocked nose. Its priceless!
