The term "fifth stroke" has only been coined for about a decade or so. In modern swimming, underwater dolphin kicks are the most efficient way to get from point A to point B while conserving energy. But not a lot of swimmers really pay enough attention to it. Todays drill is the Fish Kick drill. Large underwater kicks while on your side forces the swimmer to correct the over compensation of normal underwater kicks. The same amount of power should be applied to both the down and up kick. Watch as Luke Torres explains a little further.

3 years late but I think according to fina is 90degrees, not sure if that rule has changed since then but 90degrees is probably safe to stick to

The content itself is great! I think you'd benefit from shooting at a time with more sunlight though. I'm not a huge fan of the grain that comes through in some clips and I think part of the problem is the fact that there's so little light. Regardless, I look forward to more videos.

Why is the kick easier when you are in the water sideways than on your belly? I have noticed that myself

It's interesting isn't it. I think its because your perception changes a bit more when you are on your side and you can more directly understand the water you are cutting through and the how the movement changes that

@@PhlexSwim If it is the perception. What would cause it to change? In my opinion it is because of gravity. Kicking in your belly will weaken the downkick because gravity pulls you down. You so basically kick down while falling down. The downkick is also the strongest of both kicks so it might affect the overall performance when doing it on your belly. This theory would also explain why the backstroke underwater kick is or feels easier.

+san kitty you are correct! To be clear, this is a drill you should never use this in a rice. Just a way to practice your underwaters during training to feel a bit snappier
