Have you been struggling to get your first pistol squat? I'm willing to bet that it's a mobility issue. I will show you how to identify and fix the common issues that prevent people from getting their first pistol squat, plus I will show you the most effective exercises to develop the strength required!
Why is the pistol so hard? Not only is it a feat of strength, you are squatting your entire bodyweight on one leg through its full range of motion, but the limiting factor for a lot of people is the flexibility it requires.
Poor ankle flexibility is a major roadblock in getting your first pistol squat. How many people do you know that can back squat more than double their bodyweight on a barbell, but they can't do a pistol squat? Mobility is almost always the reason.
Once we sort out the mobility issues that were standing in the way of us getting that first pistol squat, we can then go about building the strength required to get that full pistol!

Great video as always! I really appreciate the time you take to explain how anatomy works with these exercises. It really makes learning about mobility and strength so much more fun! Also big + for the vapourwave aesthetics. I would really like to learn more about exercise and fitness in a similar manner that you teach. Are there any short courses or apps that you'd recommend to build a good foundation of knowledge? (particularly interested in understanding how bits of our anatomy interact when exercising) Also don't know if you're taking suggestions for videos but I'd love something on shoulder/hip mobility (especially if it's focused on mobility needed for Olympic weightlifting or counteracting WFH sitting in a chair hip tightness) Thanks Nikki!!

Thanks for the kind words MC. Nothing can beat an anatomy or muscular kinesiology textbook. Knowing the form of the muscles/bones will then allow you to have a deeper understanding of exercises and how joints etc relate to each other. Some good online resources: kenhub.com physiopedia.com khanacademy.org Journal of Human Kinetics on twitter (it's a journal but they post good stuff) As to the second question, my next video will be on fixing shoulder impingement. But I'll keep the hip mobility one in mind as that's something a lot of people struggle with!

What if your biggest problem is poor balance?

Improve it. Work on single leg exercises, with support at first and decrease the support over time to eventually do it free standing 🥰💪

Wow, this was really in depth and thorough! I really appreciate the anatomy bits, I think that helps a lot with understanding a movement and comparing different exercises. My issue with flexibility seems to be related to the talus. Even though I am still far from being able to do pistol squats strength wise (currently doing bulgarian split squats), I'll keep the talus movement in mind and will probably come be back to this video in a few months.
