How to update OpenTX

In this video I show how to update your OpenTX transmitter. In this video, I update a RadioMaster TX16S to OpenTX 2.3.11. However, the process is the same for other OpenTX radios. We cover making a backup of your transmitter and models, as well as updating the SC card contents.
When you copy SD card contents, make sure you keep the following folders from your old setup (as of 2.3.11):
- FIRMWARE
- IMAGES
- LOGS
- MODELS *
- RADIO *
- SCRIPTS
- SOUNDS
- SxR Calibrate
- THEMES *
- WIDGETS *
* These may only appear on some transmitters

The SD Card walk-thru was most useful. You answered a couple questions I had regarding not needed files and folders.

I've almost got my nerve up to try this because I'm still running 2.3.9 on my radiomaster tx16s, I just don't want to have to setup everything again like sounds for all the switches and definitely yaapu telemetry and maps that was a ordeal. I guess following your video it should be ok. Thanks for all you do.

Most of the time, this update goes without a hitch. You backup the models and settings before starting the update. Yaapu is on thr SD Card, so won’t be effected by the update.

Hi.. I had the same issue.. I had the cannot write firmware message so I tried to load firmware in dfu mode.. the radio says could not check firmware from radio. any ideas how to get past this would be appreciated.. cheers. It's cool.. i managed to figure it out.. all my models and firmware has been updated. so now i can increase the volume and brightness using the S1 and S2 Knobs.

ImpulseRC Driver fixer would have been my answer. If you can’t connect via DFU, that will usually fix it.

I tried updating my Taranis x9dse2019 according to your vid, but I failed. The DFU download method didn’t work either. And the ImpulseRC driver fixer did only lock up my computer. Had to do a hardboot my PC. Any chance the OpenTX Companion on an Apple computer would work?

Hi Ken. I’ve never had those problems. Especially the ImpulseRC Driver Fixer locking up the computer. I use that quite often too. The only thing I know about OpenTX Companion for the Mac, is that there is a MacOS version. I would imagine that everything works the same. So it may be worth a try.

@@MrD I’ve found another tutorial on how to do updates by writing the files made with OpenTX Companion with Windows file manager right to the sd card, then inserting the card into the transmitter and starting the boot loader. I will try to bypass Windows usb connection problems this way. Wish me luck!

Darren - Have you or can you do a video on OpenTX to EdgeTX - I have two Tx16s Eachine & RadioMaster - The RM is New and free of Models etc which I am going to upgrade to EdgeTx if and when I get my head around the changeover configuration your explanation would be most useful ...joe

I just purchased my TX16s last week and it came with version 2.3.11. I'm sure you've heard by now that the companion 2.3.11 through 2.3.14 will not check for updates. I've tried the manual update by installing 2.3.14 companion and tried replacing the two library files. Nothing works on the update check. Wondering have you've heard anything to make it work?

There is a new version of Companion 2.3.14 available which fixes this. It is recommended to clear your browser cache before trying to download. But if you got to www.open-tx.org/2021/10/01/companion-downloads and install that version of Companion, it works. I have just installed it and can confirm that updates are now checked and that firmware can be downloaded.

@@MrD cleared the browser as directed, redownloaded from your address given, when clicking on check for download buttons I get a pop up that says: companion update check failed, new version information not found. Then gives another pop-up box: firmware update check failed new version information not found or invalid

I would maybe try uninstalling Companion and deleting its folder in Program Files; or maybe try downloading using a different browser. The companion on that link definitely works. So it must just be some remnants of the faulty one on your system. My 2.3.14 had the issue. Installed the version from that link and it worked perfectly.

I really appreciate all of your ideas and suggestions. The last one worked. I went through and manually deleted everything I could find from open TX. Then I cranked up an old copy of edge instead of Firefox and downloaded with it. I just got through flashing the firmware and the last screen on the system button shows version 2.3.14 now instead of 11. Many thanks

Have updated my Frsky horus X12S to 2.3.11. Now a cant select use of the external aerial. How do I back date to 2 3.9 or 2 3.10

If you have a copy of the older firmware, you can just flash it to the transmitter. If not, you may be able to download an older Companion, but I'm not sure that will give access to the older firmware. I can't see anywhere to download the older firmware outside of Companion.

Yes, easily 🤣🤣 For everyone else who doesn’t see the joke. It is the same process. You just choose FrSky Taranis X9D Plus from the list on the settings screen.

There is a Mac version of OpenTX companion. So it should work. Unfortunately I don’t have a Mac, so can’t help much in all honesty.

@@MrD Six months after purchasing my Radiomaster, I’ve finally managed to create a model, bind its Rx and set the servos right… Crikey, things have changed since my last radio-control system: a Magregor 1-channel non-proportional jobbie which, in 1972, cost me £27, that was all my spare pocket money, birthday and Xmas presents combined!!
