This video shows how to update TP-Link powerline adapters with a Qualcomm chipset.
TP-Link TL-WPA8630P KIT (Region: EU, revision: V2.0)
The stock PLC firmware version is 2.2.3, the Wi-Fi Extender firmware version is 2.0.3 Build 20171018 Rel.36564.
Before you start write down the extact exact model number, region, hardware revision, MAC address and Powerline Key (Device Access Key, DAK) for all adapters in your network.
The firmware can be found online and/or on the tp-link community forums. The firmware is not provided here.
Optional: to extract and verify the pib files from the powerline adapters use these commands:
plcstat.exe -t -i [interface number] (-i: network interface, in this tutorial interface 3 is used; -i 3)
plctool.exe -p plctool.exe -i [interface number] -p [filename.pib] [MAC address device]
chkpib.exe -v [filename.pib] [filename2.pib] [filename3.pib]
General
00:00:01 Reset the Network Membership Key (NMK) for all devices in the network to the default name (HomePlugAV) and reset all adapters to default settings (username: admin, password: admin)
00:02:58 Open a CMD or Powershell and check all adapters in the network. It will show the mac addresses and Qualcomm chipsets. Use: plcstat.exe
Extraction (optional)
00:03:46 Extract the firmware (.nvm files) that can be found online and matches the Qualcomm chipset. When using a generic device .pib file you can skip the next step, and go to 00:07:25.
Extract the pib file from the device. Use: plctool.exe, validate the extracted pib files with chkpib.exe.
Upgrading the PLC firmware
TL-PA8010P(EU) V2.0 (a device without a Wi-Fi Extender)
00:07:25 Click Advanced and select the nvm and pib files and start the upgrade. Rinse and repeat.
TL-WPA8630P(EU) V2.0 (a device with a Wi-Fi Extender)
The default username is admin, and the default password is admin.
00:12:19 Don't worry we don't need a .bin file to upgrade the PLC firmware. The bin file only upgrades the firmware of the Wi-Fi Extender.
00:12:49 The process is simple: Click Basic and reset the device. Click Refresh in the left pane. Click Advanced and select the nvm and pib files and start the upgrade. Rinse and repeat.
00:19:31 The upgrade failed to install. Is the device bricked? No, not at all. Use a "stripped" nvm file instead and the upgrade will succeed.
