The 2015 15" MacBook Pro is still one of my favorite laptops. Have you upgraded your SSD yet? Let me know in the comments.

I was wondering... Can I use whatever nvme I want? Are there some nvme that aren't compatible with macbook pro? I was thinking about buying a new nvme for my macbook pro retina and I wanted to make sure that an PCIe 3.0 x 4(NVMe 1.3) is good for it.

Upgraded my early 2015 macbook pro with crucial 1tb ssd bought using your links. Thank u so much for the steps. The upgrade went very smooth. Only tricky part was after connecting sintec adapter, had to make sure the new ssd was inserted completely into the slot. Needed to apply some pressure. I am very happy with the extra storage and glad to own the 2015 macbook pro. Wish later models would support such kind of upgrades too. Seems wasteful to junk a machine just because of ssd failures

Thank you for this video! I followed all your instructions, swapped out the 256GB SSD for a 2TB NVMe SSD, reinstalled the OS, then did a full restore from my last Time Machine backup. Hardest part of the whole process has been copying files! Thank you for the clear directions. I feel like I have a new 2015 15" MacBook Pro! The physical swapping of drives, from turning the machine over to access the screws to putting the cover back on was 30 minutes, tops.
@D4aniB

It is noticeable faster?
@FamilyGeekery
@FamilyGeekery 4 месяца назад
@D4aniB I would say the intent is more for increasing the storage. The speed itself would probably not be as much a benefit.
@timothyhowe5369
@timothyhowe5369 4 месяца назад
@@D4aniB I have not noticed a huge increase in speed. The new NVMe drive is a bit faster than the old SSD I removed. I was not going for speed, though, as I do very little work that requires lots of speed. What is great is all the room I have available! I was having to use external hard drives to store a number of important folders and files. Now, everything is on the internal SSD 2TB drive and I can use my external drives as Time Machine backup drives. This makes working so much easier as I no longer have to try and remember which drive I stuck things on.

@familyGeekery Thanks for the video. Very thorough and to the point. Well done! Question: Your link to the ssd you used in your video leads to one called Modern, but I also see other versions ie...Pro, Agile, Swift, etc, that show faster read/write speeds. Was there any other reason other than price, that you linked to the one called "Modern", or can we use any of the other faster read/write versions in the same line like Pro or Agile, and if I do, what are the risks or cons to a faster read/write, what would you suggest or advise? I have a 15", mid-2015, 512GB ssd, 16GB Ram, i7 2.5ghz.

Hi...Thanks for this video. I have a related question. I have two 13inch Macbook Pros, a late 2013 i7 with 500gm ssd and an early 2015 i5 with 250gb ssd. Because the 2015 is more OS upgradable and a bit cleaner, I wanted to know if/how I may be able to use swap the ssds and put the 500ssd from the 2013 MBP into the 2015 MBP. If so how is this best done. If not I'll forget about it:) I don't know if the quality of the SSDs changed much from 2013 to 2015 as that could be another factor...basically is it worth doing this and if so hope best. Thanks for any guidance. Be well. Rick

QUESTION: what's the fastest SSD drive you recommend for this upgrade of the 2015 macbook pro?
@logaandm
@logaandm 8 месяцев назад
The older 2015 MBP max out around 3000-4000MB/s because of older PCIE specs. You need PCIE 4X to get the maximum speed of 2023 SSDs. You can put a faster SSD in without problems and it will have the advantage of sustaining that speed longer than a slower SSD. So for large data transfers you may still want a "faster" SSD.

I have a 128gb version. How to make a good backup so when i have a new 1TB version i have all my old files
@thardyryll
@thardyryll 3 месяца назад
The easiest way is to use an external hard drive (or SSD, but a 2.5” HDD from a laptop in an enclosure is a low-cost option) to create a Time Machine backup and restore all your files from that. The drive can then be used ongoing for Time Machine backup of your upgraded laptop.
@cstalt

Before I mess with a bootable USB, i've tried doing internet recovery-> time machine backup. My problem is it's not detecting my installed SSD (Samsung 970 Evo Plus). The Sintech support doc says that drive is not supported, but many others say it is. I've formatted the drive as APFS prior to installation, but still no dice. Did your SSD just automatically show up with no formatting?

I have a 2015 15" MacBook Pro with a 512GB SSD. I want to upgrade to a Samsung 4tb SSD - The question is: If I upgrade to the 990 Pro, will the drive operate at maximum performance, or will the limitations of the 2015 MacBook Pro throttle it's performance? If so, what would be the best drive for me to get for that computer, that would not be throttled by the limitations of the computer? A 980 Pro...? A 970 Pro...?

Checking all connections is the best advice I can give for the drive not showing up. As for the screws, if they were hard to take out, don’t put the same ones back in. Grab some new ones from Amazon, which usually comes with the right size Philips driver.

you can format the drive afterwards or before. Both using the disk utility. It has an "erase" feature. Just make sure you are erasing the correct drive! Good luck. Let me know if you have any more questions.

@@kavincenter1 No, these 2015 MBPs have a PCIe 3.0 bus with 4 lanes so it won't be able to take advantage of the full speed of that particular SSD. I have a Silicon Power SSD in mine which was able to get ~3 GB/sec for both read and write which is still pretty great for something that old
