Over the years of living in a van, I’ve learned a great deal about stealth camping in an urban environment. For many who are new to living life in a van, finding a spot to camp in and around a city can be intimidating. In this video, I hope to expose some of the Do’s and Dont’s of #vanlife in an urban area.

Having lived in a van on residential streets for about a year I recommend no matter where you are really to go in and out the front to draw less suspicion/attention, regardless of whether people already know that someone is staying in their van it helps make people feel a bit more comfortable since going in and out the front is a normal thing to do.

Recently, due to a combination of hay fever and insomnia, I found myself wide awake at 4am so I took a ride around my town to look for places where one might stealth camp. This is in a town with a population of 10,000. Within no time at all I found 30 places where one could camp. Not counting Walmart, Cracker Barrel, and a large truck stop there is 3 gyms with 24 hour access. There is a hospital as well as 2 24 hour walk-in clinics. Every shopping center and strip mall had 5-10 vehicles parked. At Lowes there were several vehicles including a white cargo van parked right outside the contractors entrance. There is an Enterprise car rental agency in the corner of a shopping center with a dozen vehicles around it. There is a movie theater and 4 grocery stores. Not to mention all the middle class neighborhoods with cars parked on the street. I could stealth camp here a month and not stay in the same place twice. It does help to be familiar with the town of course.

Great video! I try to avoid close knit neighborhoods cuz of the dogs. It seems like dogs can sense when someone is in a van and start barking a lot. Plus I stick to the arrive after dark and go right to sleep policy, but I am not a morning person (another benefit of Vanlife, as you don't have to be) and as such, I usually stay somewhere from around midnight to noon. One more thing you can do is stay around local 24 hour businesses. I am able to park at night and leave each day for 5 days at a shot and then purposely leave the area completely for a couple days before returning. If you do this routinely, you vehicle starts to be associated with someone who is working in the area over night full time. It's a great way to blend in and still be conveniently situated near downtown areas. The key is to always move your van every 8 to 12 hours just like anyone else who commutes to work would. That way people get used to seeing your van in the area but also know that it's not lived in or abandoned. I agree that people who live in vans without updated registration/plates or never move or set up their BBQs are giving us a bad name.

We did an urban camp out in Newmarket Ontario this past summer. With a family of four we had to pop the top so stealth wasn’t easy. It was probably the only sleepless night I had. You can find a nearby campground for $40 a night or always do the Walmart parking lot where there are other campers. Sometimes there’s safety in numbers.

Excellent information ! Going thru a divorce a few years ago I had to sleep in my car almost 2 years while fighting for custody. Walmart worked for me but I always alternated between 3 stores. I never had a problem and never showed up until it was time to bed down. I slept in -14 degrees inside my subzero sleeping bag. Flipping the front driver’s side seat down and sliding into the bag. I’d wake up with frozen windows but kept totally warm inside the bag. Desperate times call for desperate measures. It all worked out, got custody and live in a nice apartment. However I’m planning to retire into Camping Life /RV or Van not sure yet but can’t wait ! Thanks for the great videos !

Hi Chad, like you I live in my van in an urban environment ( in England, but the issues are the same) and I do most of the things you have described, I drive a 2001 Vw T4, I don’t cover the front windows I do have a curtain just like yours I have fitted curtains on the side and rear windows from vanX which are great for keeping light in plus I have tinted windows like yours, I use low power LED lights inside so nothing really different from your setup I have to park in the same area because of mine and my girlfriend’s work but we have a large shopping centre and lots of parallel parking in the street so all in all your advice on this video is excellent and well thought out, I’m new to your channel but I’m catching up fast with your videos there is one thing I’d like to add about keeping warm in your van tho I use a 240 volt (with inverter) electric blanket on my bed it uses minimal power but puts out as much or as little heat as you want, can’t recommend them enough, happy travels dude, speak soon. Especially along hwy 20 through the pass. I think it was a couple days ago - just beautiful! Congrats on your new van, that’s pretty exciting and awesome for you! My husband wants to do an overland set up on our truck, rooftop tent, etc. I would prefer something like a van. The truck is huge and has about a half mile turning radius. 🙄 Anyway, thanks for sharing what you do. I’ve really enjoyed watching. I’m now a subscribed fan. 👍🏼😊

Great video great tips the one thing I plan to do I’m buying cargo vans getting two of them I’m going to get those magnetic signs that you can put on your van and make a business so it will be on the side of the van it will look like a business so if there’s two of them together nobody would really question it some random plumbing or something that really would fit in and blend in the area. I thought that be kind of good to pass along to anyone who’s trying to be stealthy

One better is just get your own D.o.t. # from your local department of transportation. The numbers only cost between $57-200 a year but we'll worth it. If you slap that onto a cargo van, cops will leave you alone as they recognize it as "working man" like truck driver. Even if they see you sleeping in it, they won't bother you. The van will tell your story for you. I was expediting (hauling freight like truck driver but in a sprinter van) and I found that stealth doesn't matter at all as long as your van looks the part and has D.o.t. numbers on the door.
@ssbbmoto
@ssbbmoto 5 лет назад
That's a great idea, one thought. Don't be a business that's a trade like plumber or electrician or hvac installers, contractors and most tradesmen Van's are stocked with valuable tools or supplies that are easy to pawn and ripe for the picking, you might become a tweaker magnet. Pick a buisness which wouldn't have anything of value or worth stealing.

I don't know if I could do the van life, but I am seriously thinking about either getting a small U-haul and making a simple camper out of it, or buying a camper van (like a conversion van) and making it into a small weekend/trip camper, with the basics (mainly a bed, single burner stove, some sort of generator, and a small desk). The U-Haul would probably be a better choice as they offer more space especially the ones that have space over the cab which could be used for sleeping area, and then leave the rest of the main cargo area for a desk, small kitchen, and maybe even a small shower/toilet combo).

People that live in Texas have a real problem with heat and humidity. I've filled up wide mouth jars with ice and a small amount of water and laid them in the cot to cool off. Also ice bags that wont leak are handy to lay on or near is also handy. Keeping cold wash cloths handy is also a good choice.Ventilation is a real problem ,it is a matter of life and death if your stealth camping in hot and humid places. Keeping yourself cool enough to sleep without turning the motor on and running ac is the only way to not blow your cover. The ideal scenario is to live in the mountains in the summer and along the Texas coast in the winter. That's why you have a van to be mobile as much as possible. Good luck to all that live and want to live incognito. Stay safe.

I've got windows and fans and a Mr. BUDDY (with a co2 monitor). Gotta be able to get warm but definetly dont want to cook yourself. Also, solar. Simple igloo plug in cooler and solar with as many panels you can keep low to the roof. That's all I got on week 3 of #vanlife. Also I've got a podcast going in order not to lose my mind. #thatisrich 'That is RICH!' on Castbox, Spotify and Apple Podcast. .

There's no way an old van like yours would be stealthy and blend in. You need a late model white cargo van that can pass as a work van in order to be stealthy and blend in an urban environment.

I don't know if it has to be late model, but at least being able to pass as a work van would be kind of important. If it's older, I'd set it up as a painting company van since nobody expects those to be new or look good. Adding a few paint smudges around the doors and handles would help sell it. Add a ladder rack and ladder (good for hiding that you have solar panels), and a magnetic sign and most wouldn't look at it twice.

The white cargo vans work in many situations but they're terrible if you want to stop at a public park for any length of time. Parents notice the white utility vans and wonder why there's a work van at the park near their kids in the play area ... lol

I saw a Promaster parked for the night. A couple was walking by with their dog and we could all hear noise coming from the van. So the lady says, "somebody is in the van!" super loud. Then they start walking around the van by then the noise stopped. The guy takes a pic of the van plates and they walk away. I was thinking they were going to call the cops.

@@peterp5339 I've had "nosey stick n bricks" do that to me a few times. I just sit in the drivers seat, wait for the cops, explain how I am parked legally as a member of the general public making use of a public street and wave goodbye to the cops and then wave my polite "haha, I'm staying" glance back at the stick n bricks. They get mad too Lol. But then again I always double check that I am legal to park there.

I know the situation well and where I live it especially applies to people who are are liveaboard boaters and there are STRICT rules and zoning regarding this. One of the big reasons of course it is felt this would reduce the value of surrounding properties and other obvious issues such as pumpouts and odors etc but all your information is well ties into the same stealth and camouflage problems that would help blend in.
@pfog

I believe the word chad is looking for is ‘congregate’ not coagulate. I guess you could make the argument that coagulate works. If you’re talking about blood cells coming together to form a clot, they are concentrated into one certain area. But congregate is the word that I think fits better. Anyway, love the channel! Allows me to escape! Going through a difficult time right now and this helps. Thanks, Chad! Stay safe out there, brother!

How about a video Chad 🇹🇩 on van security? I was parked overnight in a hotel parking lot in Northern California in a upscale community when someone tried to break in my van with me in it. I yelled and he went back to his parked vehicle and then drive off after about 5 minutes. Had to replace my passenger side lock. I think Walmart is pretty much over. My fall back is truck stops, particularly flying J. Also since I’m in aviation, Municipal airports can be good. What other options can you think of? Any luck with hospitals?

I was in Grand Island NE and the local football team lost their homecoming game. That night the local teens decided to raise hell around town vandalizing cars and mailboxs. I was fast asleep and ☆☆BAM☆☆ a huge Rick the size of my head came through the window. Scared the life out of me. I was able to follow, and then help the police catch the teens. I normally wouldn't help this system catch anyone but those teens needed to be taught to respect other people's property. Then later I was in Miles City MT and a local tweaker was checking for open car doors so that she could steal stuff to get her drugs. Again no respect for property, so I called it an and described what she looked like, but didn't take the effort to follow her. Later while I was expediting, the gas station across the street from the truck stop I was parked at, got robbed and the cops showed up just in time to get into a shoot out with the criminals. Bullets hit and bounced off vans parked on both sides of mine. There was nothing I could do but hit the floor and pray. I'm not saying this to scare you out of Vanlife but you have to take the bad, with all the good. Truth be told you are not any safer living in a house and especially so if you have a stalker situation. At least in a van, they can't find you as easily.

@@rvingkeepitrolling8797 hospitals actually have the best wifi if you can park up close to the back lot where the nurses park. I agree bigger hospitals have security but a really easy way to check for this is to go into the hospital. If you see a security desk right up front instead of a regular receptionist desk, it's a good indicator that, that particular hospital has roaming parking lot patrols. Also you can pull into the hospital between 9pm-10pm as most patrols will start at that time and you can spot them. I usually waited an hour in a parking lot before deciding to sleep just in case I got a knock on the door. Sometimes you can tell them you are visiting so and so and they'll leave you alone but most times they immediately ask you to leave. Some hospitals have dedicated med student, Dr, nurses parking and I was surprised to find that a lot of medical students sleep in their vehicles at the hospital. Obviously if you pull into that lot you'll be left alone.

Bellingham seems pretty cool. I tried to move to the Seattle area a few months ago and I had a really hard time trying to find parking. It bummed me out because I had wanted to move there for a while. I ended up back in Bend, OR temporarily but I’d like to try again soon. Centralia/Chehalis or Bellingham might be the best I can do, although I could find way better pay in Seattle for my line of work. Bend, Denver, Boulder and Austin have all been great for parking pretty close to downtown. But Seattle has the climate I need!
