One thing worth adding to this already incredibly thorough video is that it‘s only natural to struggle with the は and が distinction because 1) English has no topic marker and 2) The topic and topic marker は in Japanese are often dropped because context suffices most of the time in the middle of a conversation. I‘m so excited for the next vocab episode!!

This is a fantastic explanation of が! I'd also highly recommend Cure Dolly's perspective on が, in that, when it's missing from a sentence, the subject is instead inferred by the listener. When this happens, the subject often ends up being whatever was marked by は This idea really helped me understand _why_ は doesn't just sometimes randomly replace が. は always introduces information and が always marks who does the verb

A good example for anyone who actually read that ^ A waiter at a restaurant turns to you and asks "What would you like?" You respond with: 私はピザです Oh no, does the waiter think you just said "I am pizza"? This is where the difference between は and が really comes into play 私は - introduces you into the sentence ピザです - literally means "is pizza" So the waiter assumes that the subject is pizza This translates in English to "As for me, is pizza", which doesn't sound nearly as awkward in Japanese as it does in English For what it's worth, if you said 「私がピザです」 you'd genuinely be saying "I am pizza", which I guess is a fun thing to say within itself

Thank you for this! I feel like this is a topic that can't be explained too many times. It's so confusing for English speakers and your explanations make it much easier to understand. I'll probably re-watch this video periodically until I can internalize all this 😊

This is the thing i still get wrong sometimes in phrases and texts, even though I've studied japanese for some years now, and this is by far the clearest explanation I've come across in a while. Your videos in general are a huge blessing for all japanese learners

が doesn’t usually point a finger at anything unless you’re literally trying to correct someone on what something is/doing (refer to your explanation at 4:28) For the most part, が doesn’t do much except what you say at the very beginning: connecting to a verb. What is doing the doing? は is the particle is more implying that it is not dogs that are raining but rain itself and often is more of a pointer. I like to explain to people that は implies or instigates

I think the summary for diffence between は and が will be that "Wa" is used for general subject marking. But "Ga" is used for more pointing or specific subject marking (like it is 'Wa' but with more intensity).
@nilescho2688
@nilescho2688 Год назад
Could you explain が vs けど. I understand が is the subject marker but Ik you can also use it for contrasting and saying but
@ThreeKes
@ThreeKes Год назад
けど has a more casual feel to it, while が feels pretty formal and direct. Both are „but“ and both can be used for the sentence „ender“ ですが... / だけど... Same meaning, just a different feel to it. Similar to „but“ and „however“ maybe.
@mastapimp189
@mastapimp189 Год назад
I thought the "no" at the end of a sentence was more kind of what did the pointing, giving the explanatory tone. Interesting the emphasis that "ga" gives

In my grammar database (link in the description) there is over 700 grammar points, but I've heard bunpro has even more. I'll be going through every resource I can find and making sure my database has ALL points on it eventually. With detailed breakdowns/lookup function available on the discord.

in n4, there are 230-250 grammar points. I am studying it, that's why I know. The way I study changed a whole lot after meeting matt, It might be better in the long run, if you just study the grammar, and watch whatever you can rather than sticking to one textbook. But it's obviously slower this way if your aim is JLPT
@southcoastinventors6583
@southcoastinventors6583 Год назад
@@RockChampEnglish JLPT should not be the goal it should be understanding/speaking about the content you find interesting. If you do that then taking some test will be trivial and I would only ever take the highest one in Japan since it cheaper. Text books aren't for me I use native electronic content, RU-vid and ChatGPT to learn Japanese.

1:27 I'm confused by this part of the video. Coffee is not performing the verb... Coffee does not want to drink itself. Shouldn't "coffee" be marked with を? And "I" be marked with が? So instead it would be 私がコーヒーを飲みたい
@GameGengo
@GameGengo 8 месяцев назад
That's a great question! According to numerous Japanese explanations online, the reason seems to be because "日本語では、目的語「対象各」をしめすのに 動詞は「を」・形容詞は「が」を使う 水を飲む(動詞) 水が欲しい(形容詞) www.nihongo-books.com/items/mizu_nomitai/" Which means, を is used to mark the target of action (used with verbs at the end like 飲む to drink) "I drink water - 水を飲む" が is used with adjectives like 欲しい to want, so a literal translation would be 'X is what is wanted to be drunk" or "I want to drink X" 水を飲みたい In this example コーヒーが飲みたい, the TAI form is actually considered an adjective, as its describing information about the coffee "Coffee is what is wanted to be drunk (by me)"
@RenKohana
@RenKohana 8 месяцев назад
@@GameGengo Thank you! That explanation made a lot of sense. I was also looking more into this myself. I really appreciate the video and your time to comment. I better understand the use of が, especially when they're used with verbs that express desire.

complete illiterate here so forgive me but at 3:30 I hear "ho shi na shi ne ba" and not "ho shi GA shi ne ba". It's impossible to bring myself to hear, even slightly, the particle "ga" in this sentence. is that a pro nunciation thing, like "ha/wa" ?
@GameGengo
@GameGengo Год назад
I can hear it very clearly, so I think it may just be a pronunciation thing? the が is being kinda squashed between 星 and 死ねば a bit maybe? But I can see what you mean where he isn't saying with as much emphasis as I might in teacher-mode.
