It's good knowing you can use multiple compatible hard drives with the PS4/Slim/Pro. Just wish you could use two simultaneously like the Xbox One. Oh well, bring on the PSN name change already. 😂😂😂
technically all you're doing is swapping between multiple external harddrives. That isn't using multiple external at once.. You could, in theory swap between a pretty much unlimited number of external hdds on a ps4. And the Xbox one allows up to 4 external hdds at once as long as the combined total space is 16 TB or less. Meaning you could have 4 4TB drives or 2 8 TB drives on a xbox one in addition to the internal (max of 2 TB via a special edition, but typically best you will find is 1 TB for some stupid reason) Technically the ps4 can do 2x 8 tb as well. You'd have to ghetto rig it (not certain if either nyko data bank version allows 8 tb hdds). via a sata cable and having it external (which is risky and ghetto looking). Even if the nyko data bank allows 8 tb hdds you'd be at literal risk of overheating as it only has passive ventilation at best and no fan. And from what i saw on amazon the other day the cheapest 8 tb sata 3 drive was 179.95 and the cost of a usb 3.0 enclosure was about $23-25 usd. Microcenter (mine at least) doesn't even offer a enclosure supporting that (6 tb at most for about the same price. Cheapest was a Toshiba or HGST model for the same price (though HGST had a lot more refurbished drives on amazon so i'd say Toshiba is the better bet) And yes its dumb that sony doesn't allow more than one at once. Its just their dumb policy. Its not any technical limitation. Even the 360 or ps3 could potentially use pretty much any you could give them via usb 2.0 if they wanted. The wii u can do that (if you ever had enough games to have a reason for it) And that doesn't even require usb 3.0, only 2.0 unlike the ps4 and xbox one. Realistically its stupid design to require 2.5 inch drives in modern consoles, after all modern hdds (from what i've seen) are up to 14 tb (seen that at micro center just the other day). Games are a lot more bloated and so are patches, so being able to use more harddrives and larger harddrives shouldn't be the issue that it is. And being able to allow and cope with 3.5 inch drives would only make them a couple inches bigger (if even that, though possibly more cooling required but hey simple fan would take care of that easily) Frankly i wouldn't care if my console was physically larger. 3.5 inch drives are cheaper than 2.5 inch and come in far larger capacities. Hopefully next gen will allow 3.5 inch drives in the console that we can replace and allow us any size and amount for external storage. Wouldn't mind seeing game sizes be more reasonable as well as this generation literally ballooned to multiple sizes larger than last gen (1-8 gb on average before patch, with only select games really being larger)
you should test out "solutions" like nyko data ank and seagate game drive (max is 8 tb). I've heard questionable things about the nyko data bank but it can be obtained cheaply. Like how hot does it really get if transferring a lot of files and gaming off of it both at once?(if that's possible), could use a digital thermometer to read its temperatures basically a means to test out how it really does in real world scenarios.
You can long press the ps button and select stop using extended storage and the go to setting and turn on the second drive an use it save turning the console on and off just saying cheers for the vid help me a lot
Thanks for confirming what I was thinking my PS4 can't run both plugged in at the same time. Now I have to make a list like I did on ps2 😂 what's on what memory card
There's no real reason why Sony couldn't allow more than one at a time. Just like there's no reason Microsoft couldn't allow more than 2 at a time. At least Microsoft's limit is 2, I don't know why Sony hasn't at least allowed up to two, it's got the ports built in. No hub needed.
Not quit sure how to do that. Only way I can think of is put all of your games on one external, then unmount it and plug the other one in and then, add them that way. Trying to transfer it the PC route (one external to the other...you know basic copy n paste) whenever you plug in the second external harddrive to your PS4, it's going to want to format it. And when it formats, it deletes everything on there. So yeah, I'm not sure on how to technically do this.
That was this i was wondering too because i myself just got a 8tb external hard drive but the problem is that I used a 4tb before but I want to transfer but wondering how I do it without using the ps4 extend storage
😂 i dunno whether to laugh or cry 😭 his wifes ps4 is organized by folders while i cant even have 4+ games on my og ps4. Wish you could plug in two drives
You can just switch back and forth on the ‘USB Storage Device’ menu. So different apps/games can be used on two different hard drives without unplugging or powering off and switching hdd. Thanks for the info in your video!
Pretty much. You can run two external he's simultaneously with Xbox but not on PS4. Don't know why but none of the PS4's (Pro/Slim) support this feature.
So with this logic from Sony, I can’t even duplicate the same games and memory to 2 external HDs to use one as a back up in case the other one crashes. That sucks! I always like to use back up HDs just like I do with my music on my HDs I use for my Mac. I have 3 total HDs that all have the same stuff just to be safe. Wow Sony.
Y’all I am trying to figure out how to transfer games from one external hard drive to a second external hard drive And I am definitely finding nothing on RU-vid to help me
Raster Boy99 You can use two external hard drives at the same time on a PS4 if one of the hard drives got extra usb ports making both hard drives run from one usb port on the PS4
You can use two external hard drives at the same time on a PS4 if one of the hard drives got extra usb ports making both hard drives run from one usb port on the PS4
Hey, thanks for the video. I have a question though. If I had an old extended storage and bought a new one how can I transfer my memory from my old one to my new one?
i was preparing my PS4 pro for 3 hard drive at a time like on the xbox one X to series X , but i just found out PS4 doesn't support more than one disc at a time, same with PS5 sadly... i really do not get why ?? the xbox does support up until 4 drives at once all showing their games each times the console is on .. i'm sick, and tired of those complications on playstation , i love their exclusives, but when i see that with the ps5 we have no 3D blu raysupport, no dolby vision, no dolby atmos, one external drive not more at once, no themes, ect... like with the PS4 is a step backward and we will have to wait maybe some features introduced in 1 year or two .. but why not support all the most important things ??
Thanks bro..now am gonna buy another 1tb ext hhd for ps4..all u have to do is swap hdd when power is off. these big games and updates eating up my space 😁 Am keepin my ps4 for the next 5yrs..until I buy a ps5 slim..see u in 5yrs time 😁😅😉👍
@@dthomasfromnc 😁 life is unpredictable..u never know when our time is up.⏳anyway i still use my ps3slim for multi media, some games am keeping that's not on the ps4..keep up the good work😁
Yeah I know life is unpredictable. But I like speaking life into existence being hopeful we live long healthy lives. But I get what you're saying. I want a PS3 slim so bad. Thanks for checking out my channel.
One thing I can say is I really dislike how Sony did their formatting the Xbox does it better. I really dislike how Sony made it so you have to wait for a game to be moved over Xbox you don't you can do whatever you want and it will move over itself.
Not exactly sure how to repair the external HD. You should be able to out the PS4 data on your external hd then plug it into your new PS4 and it should transfer.
hey bro is there any way to run multiple 8TB hard drives in line without having to plug/unplug?In todays world with the technology there is you should be able to plug a MULTI-PORT into the ps4 and plug as many drives as the MULTI-PORT can handle and use them!
Good to see this. Got a 4tb nearly full and just bought a 8tb. so very handy to know. but playstation really need to sort this out, so you can at least transfer one to the other. Not enough USB ports, plugs and wires everywhere 🤣🤣
This feature will never be supported due to piracy concerns. Xbox one aren't concerned so much so they are taking a greater risk that Sony aren't willing to take. This position will last as long as the current CEO for Sony is still working there. He is stubborn.
U dont need to do all that power on and off shit just go to setting devices then USB storage devices then click on that device and no say stop using this extended storage then you can disconnected without having any problems
Good vid. I suppose this is the best workaround until PS4 supports two connected external HDs at same time (I don’t they will ever enable this functionality though). It sucks because Xbox one you can have up to 3 and it works well. I made the mistake of only buying a 1 TB external some time back to supplement the meagre 500 gb internal and now it’s full. It’s annoying juggling storage and uninstalling / reinstalling. I prefer to have most of my stuff installed and ready to go. Should of got at least a 4 TB external but at the time my budget was tight. Maybe at some point I will get one and the only juggling I’ll have to do is a quick USB swap between the two! But Sony really should of enabled concurrent use of multiple HDs. It’s actually stopped me being anymore of their games and levitate more to my Xbox one for new releases. I know a tiny pinprick in their huge wealth but just shows how they can shoot themselves in the foot!
Hey man, this was the best way I found to do it. And like you said, I LOVE my XBOX ONE X and the fact it supports multiple external hd's simultaneously. I currently have a 8tb and a 3tb connected to it. With the scorpio being 1tb itself, I'm looking at about 12TB's of storage. Even though I have a 8tb for my PS4 as well (which is a lot of space), but still, being able to support multiple external hd's like Xbox is a great bonus. I'm working on an upcoming video pointing this out about Xbox One & the PS4. Yes it does suck to have to reinstall and uninstall games just to try and juggle and make space. Guess you have to work with what you got. But yeah, Sony needs to get on it.
Thanks for this brilliant info. We can use 2 external hard drives but only one of them will work. Means, still can plug both of them. Switching one of them by disconnecting it. I love my games but, also loves call of duty series. I regret deleting MW 2019 + Warzone because the game size is really awful. Now i can purchase another ext hdd, redownload them, plug, switching with the other. Again. Thank you.
Great video, thank you very much! Only one question, are you plugging the external drives into the same port, or are you using more than one port between the two drives? Thank you!
Thank you for your video, it was very helpful. But what if down the line I wanted a bigger External HD, how do I transfer my games from my existing External HD to a new and larger External HD?
Hello,i have heard that all the game saves go to internal hard disk and only the game itself stores at external drive. Is it true?Cause my only fear is that if i format my external,i will loose all my game saves.Thank you in advance!
nice one bro, just bought 2 and was going to send one back, but its 2tb and the one im using (It arrived before the other) is 1tb. So thanks and I will keep the 2 drives. They are seagate especially for the PS4 edition and the other is WD, This works amazingly well on a original PS4
My issue I face tomorrow is currently I have a 500gig SSD hooked up to my ps5. I have just ordered a 5TB WD Black to hook up but need to get all the things off the 500 onto the 5TB. I wish I could just transfer but you can’t.
My steps to solve this issue. 1) discount the current 500G external 2) plug in new one and format 3) transfer what I can to the new one to make enough room on the internal (lucky I had COD Modern Warfare on the internal so that gave me an extra 250gig 4) plug in old external 5) transfer all data and games from external to internal 6) plug back in the new external 7) transfer all my PS4 stuff off the ps5 internal to the new hard drive Taaadaaa!!! Pain in the bum but worked.
Not sure if this will work so I would be cautious. I have 2 extended storage devices in my ps4 slim. You can only use one at a time. However if you go into settings and select USB devices both extended storage drives will show. You can then choose which one is the active one. It will mean you cannot use the other one until you go back and select it. This way saves having to turn off and disconnect one drive and connect another. Sony seemed to have messed up here. What is wrong with being able to use 2 extended devices like the Xbox One? Maybe they can sort it out.
Me: on ps4 having 400gigs in total and 80 gigs left of free space CoD: I’m bout to end this mans whole career Me: just got a 1 tb... not so tough anymore
Whats the biggest external hard drive can PS4 handle also can you put a multi socket on the USB 3.0 so I can use my ps VR and hardrive at the same time.,
@@dthomasfromnc Can you go into more detail about that? I get swapping one for the other, but what happens if you plug both in at the same time? Can you access them or will the console say something like "Unable to access the devices in the USB ports, please connect only one at a time"?
@@SirFailsalot91 it reads both, as they show up in devices. Though only one can be activated at a time for storage/transfer. I'm still experimenting, it seems you can just activate the other and swap between them.
Thanks. I just bought the secondary 2TB external drive and read somewhere that formatting new external drive makes 1st one no longer compatible to use on the PS4 which would mean all games on that one would have to be re-downloaded, so I thought my only option is one 8TB, but knowing this works helped a lot. I wish you plugged in the first one and confirmed that the first formatted external drive still works, though, despite the Sony's text indicating that other drive is needed.
Great! Good to know that. My 4TB Western Digital external disk is almost full... And just found out there is no need to bigger replacement and download everything again. Thanks for the info!
This is kinda a dumb question tbh but, if I disconnect my hard drive (after manually disconnecting it like Sony recommended) and connect my ps4 to another tv and I plugged back in my hard drive, would my save data still be on the hard drive?
Hi bro. Listen. Maybe you know how to clone one external HD to another external HD ? I have looked all over but still no luck. Only way is to transfer external HD1 to internal HD and then to external 2 HD. It would be easier if there was a software that could clone external HD1 to external HD2. Thx bro
Hi friend, congratulations on your video. I have a doubt, I put an SSD and another HD both external on my ps4 connected together. Can this cause the console to overheat or should I not worry? Greetings from Brazil 👍
Yeah I found out that I couldn't because I bought a 10tb for my modded ps4 full of games. But I already got a 4tb sticky for the modded ps4. I gotta transfer from my pc and see if it works to transfer some games. From the 10tb to 4tb. Just because of that.
@@dthomasfromnc so how I can transfer the ps4 games from one external HD to another one? Cause I have 1tb external hard drive and it's full so I wanna upgrade to 4tb external hard drive but I wanna transfer my games from the old one to the new And thanx a lot for replying back 😊🙏
@@dthomasfromnc I hope if Sony in the near future would update that to allow us use two external HDs at the same time, anyway thanx for your replying and for the video 😊🙏
I want to copy my game saves for only 3 games I love to play to a new external hdd and I have unlocked many things and costumes and just incase I ever need a new console I want to copy my saves for a new ps4. Do I have to format my external hdd to my pc? And do I choose exfat or fat32? Also with my game saves copied to my external hdd can i also save new games to it?
I bought a Seagate 2TB external hardrive to my PS4 Slim and although it recognizes it the PS4 will not format it as extended storage because it says that it doesn’t work for the slim
So if my friend has a external hard drive I can use his to put in my ps4 to change out my HD’s for a ssd I just haft to disconnect his external hard drive by sounds/devices?
Hey DThomasFromNC I Just Got My 2TB Hard Drive This Christmas And Im So Happy Because It Works And I Have 2 Hard Drives Now! And I Also Bought The Game Hot Wheels Unleashed.
Thanks, but I’m running into an issue where switching is taking multiple minutes and freezes my ps4, I tried putting it on rest mode to restart it, but it’s stuck on the putting into rest mode screen. I’m considering unplugging my ps4 and plugging it back in, though there are risks of corruption with that. I need help
Appreciate the info bro.Just got a 10 TB hard drive for my PS4. Gonna have to go game by to everything off my 3TB hard drive I was using, but it will be worth it.
Will 2 2tb game drives work too? UPDATE!!!!: Your PS4 can have up to 18TB of storage. 2TB internal and 2 8TB external drives. Can't have both active simultaneously though but they are both recognized and all you have to do is go to USB device settings and switch external drives
Well take that PC hard drive and connect it via one of the USB slots on your PS4. If its compatible, it should work with no problem. Won't know until you try.
Wait I thought you have to press PS button and do what it tells you and it says disconnect external hard-drive? But you could also turn off ps4 and it will still work? I don't think your supposed to do that, that's why it says repair external hard-drive
ImpossibleVids14 yeah you're suppose to properly power off the console. I was just showing that if you were to somehow prematurely disconnected your external hard drive, what to do if that happens.
Great video'! However i is it possible to pull over games from one external to another? My current situation is that I have 2 PS4s and an external hd for each one with different games on each and I would like to combine them to one?
Iam trying to upgrade my ps4 to a 2 Terabyte but I wanted to know if its possible to use the same ps4 and take all the games and all that and still have all the things saved in my games and just install a 2 Terabyte and then put in on idk if I made sense but can someon plz help me
All you have to do is back up and save your game data to a thumb drive or to the cloud. Once you do that, install your 2TB hard drive and once that's done, download your data from the cloud or from the thumb drive. Hope this helps.
I have a question, i have a 2 tb external and want to upgrade to 8tb . So I’ll be moving stuff from 2tb to system then onto 8tb . And repeat until done . Can I do that . Or do I have to get 4tb and not a 8tb ?
But can u use games from 1 consule to another ... example ... u have games on ur drive and lend it to ur brother or like with u that have multiple consuls ... ur wife's games to ur's ..
Common since once i figure out how you can buy an external hard drive i know i can get another and put more different games on it I'm black too buddy i have the common sense also my brother
You can move it to the console, then swap, and move it to the other. Basically just like in this video. I'm trying to figure out how to manually update one ps from another... Don't have access to a computer anymore, and my daughter's keeps crashing and have to reinstall update. Not even sure if it's possible.
Thanks for the video. I've already got a 2tb external hard drive filled up and my 1tb pro is full also. Do you think I should buy a separate external hard drive and swap between or get a bigger beefier one and just use the one?
@@dthomasfromncYeah I think I agree with you, but transferring them all to one big hdd will take some time haha. Thanks again and cheers for the quick reply!
