PS5 External Storage SSD - Can you connect 2 External Drives at the same time?

Thanks I really appreciate your comment. I hope they address this too, its the least they can do until they give us a real solution for an internal drive. Crazy thing is, PS4 was at least able to reconnect (via USB Devices) the HDD without having to unplug and plugging it back in! Sony dropped the ball on all things storage related.

Why?? Just buy a larger external drive.

Yeah like I just got a ps5 and it can’t even fit any games it feels worse then the ps4 at least then 400gb felt like a lot now that’s just the space of one game and they only added 800gb so it’s already full and my 8tb eternal hard drives full and I really don’t feel like getting up too switch between drives honestly fix this Sony

There's no chance you would damage your console

Honestly I didn't know Xbox supports two drives and if it can that's another let down from Sony ... starting to wonder if I should have gone the Xbox route ... I mean I know we get Wifi 6 and USB C but right now this is a functional limitation for anyone who currently owns multiple smaller external drives, the least the could have done is make it easy to switch between multiple drives, lets hope they fix all this as well as support for PS5 games on external storage at least even just to keep them local.

@@TKsTechTalk xbox elite controller uses usb c... actually can be rerouted buttons and has extra back pads for shooter games. And series x can run ps2 games , ps3 games , nintendo games i should have gotten it instead of the ps5.

@@-Old-School-Gamer He’s talking about where you can pay $20 and use developer mode on Xbox and it allows you to install and use emulators. It doesn’t void the warranty or anything but obviously some games won’t work well or at all ymmv. Check out MVG he made a video on it.

Yeah its nice to have a transparent enclosure for sata ssd's as some of them have nice designs, I can't remember the brand but got it from Amazon. Thanks for watching glad you found it useful.

So unfortunately I can't find the exact one that I bought but here are a couple of links from UK and USA Amazon stores (if you live else where you can just search for transparent 2.5 SATA enclosure), I have seen some on eBay as well, and they are similar to what I bought. Hi, Thanks for watching. That's a great question and I assume you can use multiple different drives though I haven't tried more than 2 different drives. I guess if the SSD stores it's own info about setup as external drive I guess it's possible you can use more than 2 but wouldn't know without trying. All the best, TK :).

Yes a 4TB SSD would definitely be expensive and would only currently be possible with an external enclosure as the internal drive is not currently supported and the maximum capacity even for the PCIE 4.0 SSD's is currently 2TB. Unfortunately at the moment I don't know when the internal SSD will be supported an time will tell. Ah man, yeah it's a shame to realise this after purchasing the drive. But since you have the drive I guess we can only hope for an update and though its not ideal at least you can use each drive individually to store different games, will be a pain to remember where each game is. If both your drives are the same size as mentioned by @DJDynamitenyc mentioned you could try a RAID 0 enclosure, I have one and plan to test this out as well. Again not an ideal solution and needs more money spent on additional equipment but at least its some sort of option. Thanks for watching.

I run my ps4 games (5tb worth) on an 8tb WD_Black D10 Runs very smoothly if not better than my ps4 pro so I'm more than happy with it!

So i have another video which I used a dual bay drive enclosure, I guess this would be similar to a dock but i configured it for RAID 0 so both drives act as 1 drive, in that scenario it works, otherwise it will most likely only only detect one drive or maybe none depending on the controller. As far as PS4 Extended Storage is concerned, at the time of recording you will only be able to use 1 drive at a time, unless of course Sony decides to change this in a software update. Move it from ext drive to internal, remove ext hdd, plugin the new one move.from.internal to that ext hdd

@@gejamugamlatsoomanam7716 That's correct, there is no easy way to do it from one drive to another, you either copy from external to internal then new drive, which can be a pain as the internal storage is limited so would require multiple passes. Or just download all the games again which may not be favourable depending on your internet connection.

So I assume you mean connect an external SSD while your external hard drive is connected, I believe the result will be the same and only the first connected drive will show in extended storage. Yes you are right SSD is not a necessity though you may have seen from other videos and feeds on the internet that it is beneficial to loading times, better in some games than others, but overall an 8TB drive is more cost effective and convenient than buying multiple SSD's or a much more expensive single 8TB SSD.

HI, Thanks for watching. Yes you can, I think I demonstrated this in the video, but you can use multiple drives and switch between then easily. Just remember to gracefully eject a drive before you connect another one if you are doing this whilst the PS5 is switched on and running with a drive connected. Hope that helps.

Hi, Thanks for watching. Personally I doubt it will make any difference, it will still try to detect only one drive, so the one which one is connected first will be the one detected until you remove it through settings. Really hope they do something about this. Hope that helps.

Hi, Thanks for watching. Yes you can use more than one drive on the same console just not at the same time. You just need to remove safely and switch between the drives, and it will read content from the other drives. Hope that helps.

That's a really good idea I might have to try that to see how it works. I guess the only limitation there is if we have different size drives we would lose some space, might have to try with two identical drives, let me see if I have something I can try.

Hi thanks for watching. Yep it really is very fussy with the drives, guessing it uses a certain port as primary not really sure though, hope they add support for multiple drives at some point.

That's right theoretically we should get faster results from a 10Gbps external drive however from my results of copying PS4 games on and off the PS5, both SATA and NVME drive results were more or less the same, I guess this is currently a limitation set within the PS5 for PS4 data, I hope they update it with support for faster drives. @@TKsTechTalk that’s what they probably meant. I want to transfer all my external storage (2TB full of PS4 games) to another external hard drive (4TB) for my PS5

@@InfernalNiteWolf Hi, Thanks for watching. Ok I guess that makes sense. To the best of my knowledge I don't think there is an easy way to do this. I guess it may be possible to use some third party software to read one drive and copy to another PS4 formatted drive or maybe a cloning software. I guess the easiest but very long method would be to copy each game to internal then to new external, though this can be a real pain I guess.
