Yep, this is not a joke. I Just published a video on how to use a Crosley. It's time we were more welcoming of Crosley new collectors, otherwise I fear the hobby will die out due to snobbery! 🎧🎵(The bit in my video measuring the tracking force is quite revealing though!) The fact is, we're fast approaching the holiday period, and many will snap these up as gifts (like it or not). My aim here is to help newcomers in the vinyl hobby embrace the joy of collecting records, take what they can from what is essentially a glorified toy, and seek to upgrade if they're enjoying the hobby.

You hit it on the nail when you said that a Crosley is a glorified toy. I have always maintained that these types of suitcase and all in one (record player, radio, CD player, tape player, etc. usually in a wooden type cabinet) players are OK for a kid’s first record player. But if you’re over 12 or so, save your money and steer clear of these. I can appreciate your wanting to reach out to new people just getting into the vinyl hobby, and in particular, those on a budget. People can do what they want with their money. But it’s best that if someone really wants to explore the vinyl hobby, they should start out on the right foot. And that means saving up if you have to, in order to get a decent starter turntable such as the Audio Technica AT LP 60X. Yes, they would need to get speakers for it, and that’s an extra expense. But they will be, I believe, much happier overall and in the long run. Vinyl albums can run up to $30-40 each or more, and it makes no sense to play them on a player that costs only a few dollars more. Plus, this way, they can hear more of what vinyl really sounds like, and why people are into this hobby. Lastly: I don’t see this hobby dying out due to snobbery. In anything, you’re going to have those who think they know it all. So in that respect, everything would die out due to these snobs. There are plenty of people (and more joining everyday) that love vinyl and are in it for the long run. So I don’t see interest in the vinyl hobby going away anytime soon!!!

Yes! I just randomly picked up a Crosley from the Goodwill store even though a record player wasn’t on my radar 😆 Doesn’t have all the same bells and whistles as yours in the video here but for $30, I feel like it’s a nice little introduction to vinyl listening for my kids. If I decide to get serious, I will do my research. This is just the kind of video I was looking for to show my kids how to properly use a record player.

Well if you want a shitty player that eats records go ahead and use a Crosley. It’s your money and your records. You don’t need to be an audio snob to point out the obvious

@@andrewb773 VWestlife debunked this. Millions of records were played on equivocally bad BSR/Sears turntables back in the day and survived. I highly recommend checking his video out. Crosley's aren't great but they won't destroy your records.

I just picked up this exact one at a garage sale today, brand new, for 20$ … I’ve always wanted to collect records & learn more, I just never had the funds. I really appreciate your video and your attitude towards this/collecting! This was very informative. I got the joy of playing my grandmas old records for her right after I tested it out. When i was in High School I played my first record on a cheap plastic record player not even the quality of a Crosley. That was my parents player and the didn’t believe in a proper stereo because “you had to play it loud.” In a few months i bought a component system from a department store. Many years later i moved on to a proper audiophile system. I still have that first record: JC Superstar OG. So we all have to start somewhere!

thanks for this video and the non-judgmental stance on starter entry (read: bad/cheap) turntables for newcomers to the hobby. ive been collecting vinyl for 3 years now and im aware of the bad rep that crosley has, but not many ppl online are willing to explain why these turntables are not recommended in a helpful way so appreciate this quick starter guide. my family wants to listen to some xmas records when i come home for the holidays but they dont have a TT at home, so i caved and bought a cruiser for portability reasons. this video helped figure out the set-up i need before it comes in for thanksgiving week, so i'm grateful i can see just how spartan it is in advance!

also want to add--in my research for the crosley cruiser i came across this blog post re: the tracking force. most beginners won't know or care about this (and i imagine seasoned audiophiles won't either) but i wanted to throw a bone to the cruiser and say their reputation for tearing records apart might be an exaggeration just based on this 2019 review: "The Crosley will NOT immediately destroy your records. The tracking force is NOT grossly out of line with what is normal for ceramic cartridges and early record players. (Some tracked at up to 10 grams!) Most ceramic cartridges should track at between 5 and 8 grams, and the Crosley Cruiser tracks at about 6 grams, which is a good thing, because it's not adjustable without a Dremel and/or some glue. This is the same type of weight and cartridges used in early record players and stereos at the beginning of the "Hi Fi" era. It's what my tube powered GE Trimline tracks at, and it can wipe the floor with a Cruiser. These ceramic cartridges with their 6 gram tracking force do wear records, and do so more than their magnetic 1.5 gram elliptical brethren do, but most of the of vintage records you're going to find still sound great after being played on players even heavier than the Crosley's tone arm" www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/viewtopic.php?t=114458&start=60#:~:text=Most%20ceramic%20cartridges%20should%20track,Dremel%20and%2For%20some%20glue.

I always try to help Crosley owner get better turntables. Usually vintage because they are can be had for even cheaper than a Crosley if you go to a Thrift Store, Estate Sale, or yard sale, and always tell them not to play vintage or limited editions records on the Crosley because of the tracking weight. at least with a new Record you can replace it when the Crosley adds a groove burn and a bunch of surface noise to it. The first time I heard a Crosley Cruiser was when a friend had just bought one because he had hear my Technics SL-DD33 and was inspired, at first I was thinking it can't be that bad i had bought crappy record players in my childhood from the 89-97 and they all sounded decent then I heard it. I thought the sound quality was because the speakers were so small, so I plugged it into my sound system and it didn't sound ANY better, I managed to convince him to buy a Diamond tipped stylus but it took him a year to realize that the Crosley was a mistake and that is was time to upgrade

Turntables can be trial and error. It's hard to compare low end turntables these days to a decent turntable. In the past it wasn't as hard to compare when we didn't have digital music at our fingertips and cd players were non existent or expensive till sometime in the 90's and good quality turntables and cassette decks were quite expensive. In those days cheap turntables were a compromise and most people probably didn't know what a decent turntable sounded like.
@ocularcavity8412
@ocularcavity8412 8 месяцев назад
@@ccadam I don't think that digital music is the problem it is more the fact that there is SOOOO much GARBAGE out there now and most people these days are willing to accept lower quality without complaining. I used to think the U-turn orbit was a good turntable based on the Reviews I had seen until I got to use a Demo Unit at my local record shop. Yeah it sounded okay but it felt like it was MOMENTS from falling apart and this was 2018 so this turntable couldn't have been more than 3 years old. Most of mine are 30-40 years old some were even HEAVY abused and NONE (EVEN the broken ones) felt this bad. NOBODY in the 70's or 80's would have accepted anything this poorly built and to be completely serious I have seen Vintage Turntables with the Ancestor of the Crosely Mechanism from the late 80 early 90's that were tighter and better put together than this thing even though they would've sounded worse there was a higher standard for build quality back then. The crazy part is about turntables today is that unless you want to pay a MINIMUM of $599 I don't think ANY modern turntables compares to a vintage turntable from 1972-1983 that cost more than $100 when it was originally on sale. So I will ALWAYS recommend Estate Sales and Thrift Shops over new to anyone lookin to get into Listening to Records on the Cheap. I recently bought a Turntable for $18 at an estate sale and if I wanted a new turntable that would be of the same level quality I would need to spend $4000 and yes it is an SL-1200 MkII and even though the SL-1500c and the SL-1200 Mk7 are well build and sound good their build quality is still below the MKII and it isn't until you get to the Sl-1200GR that you get a Turntable can matchup.

I’m wondering if maybe it’s a good idea to perchase a turntable mat/slipmat for the corsley suitcase record player? To me it makes sense so that the weight of the needle does not damage the record, but I want to ask someone who is more experienced in this, so what do you think?

I think you may struggle to find one that fits the platter. They're much smaller than a standard turntable platter.

Hi - I love that I came upon this page. I just purchased a Croskey Cruiser Premier. Everything seems fine but the actual base - the whole right side that the arm, speed control and auto stop are located, is not anchored to the box. I can push it down and it comes up. I will show you in a video. I’m thinking that this should not be happening. Right? If it’s defective, I will return it. Please let me know. Thanks, so much.

By a cord, I take it you mean the RCA output on the back to go to external speakers or a receiver? If so, you'll be able to get the right cable from Amazon or any store that sells electronics really.

If you just found few records maybe from markets or garage sale and want something to play them then why not. And if the hobby catches on and you get few more records and find it interesting then spend a little more. As you pointed out the stylus is very heavy and I can't see it being very kind for the records. But this turntable I think has a purpose. For cheap turntable little over $50 it has lot of functions and style. I see this turntable more of a novelty, decorative and nostalgic for the beginning of the vinyl era and I think that's the whole idea of this turntable.
