Thank you so much for this very helpful tutorial. For those that don't want to, or have the paint available, for painting the nail block; I treated my new nail block with butcher block oil. As a bonus, while my hands were already greasy from rubbing the oil into the block, I went ahead and treated all my good wooden spoons and wood handled knives, etc. :) That should help prevent the block from absorbing coloring and also protect it from developing cracks.

that depends a bit on what flower you are making as it's much easier to spin a nail than it is a cupcake, but yes there are some that cane be piped directly on cakes, cupcakes and other creations.
