This video is part of a video series made for a high school gold mining and mineral prospecting course. This is a demonstration of the gem sieve in action using very specific materials in order to easily show the separation of heavies from lights.

Can you do this with a kitchen strained lr does it have to be exactly like this model?

Hmm! I seem to remember that a screen saruka is slightly conical so that the heaviest is right at center.

Can you do this for gold?

Looks like your screen is too tight to get a perfect separation of materials. Would a saruca work better as a gem sieve?

+John Ruckman the saruca is just another name for this same tool. And kinda expensive to buy. I use this small mesh size because there are no gems in our local creeks that are much bigger than 1/16". They are not useful for anything, but the students have fun finding them. And it teaches them the technique just fine.

The expression of the audience is one of "nobody's home", like they'd rather be texting or rather be somewhere else. What a bunch of lackadaisical uninterested people.
