I use a rotary trimmer with different blades that I never use but was excited about when I bought it. Now I can say that this type is much better! Plus you can cut multiple sheets at a time, safer and easier.

Glad you like it....I bought a really expensive rotary trimmer from a company that specialized in trimmers called mybinding.com....I couldn't push down on the rotary tool, hard enough to cut through one piece of cardstock....I had called them to place my order and told them my concerns and they made the recommendation for the trimmer that I couldn't use...So I called them and said I wanted to return it and why, and they made me pay a restocking fee plus return shipping....the lady said that all that is spelled out when you place your order online....When I told her I didn't place it online and had talked to one of their employees, she waived part of the fee, but said it was almost not worth it for me to return it....That was one costly mistake on my part, but why keep it when I couldn't use it...so I stay clear of rotary trimmers...The Cricut one is still my favorite....$12 well worth the money....

Crafting For Almost Everyone I would have sold it to someone else, rather than return it. I think you'd have gotten most of your money back that way. I'm not very familiar to returning policies in the US, but that doesn't seem alright paying restocking fees to return a product, especially if it's within the return period, but paying the shipping back is pretty common.
@craftingforalmosteveryone
@craftingforalmosteveryone 5 лет назад
I'd never had a company ask for a restocking fee, but know that our big electronic store "Best Buy" charges restocking fees for a lot of their products that you buy in their stores (not online, you're actually taking it back to where you bought it.) I've always thought that wasn't right, but I guess store policies are what they are. I don't shop there much any more either...Once burned, twice shy.. I don't have any crafty friends locally that would have bought an expensive paper trimmer. They'd have laughed at me for buying it in the first place, as good friends will sometimes do....haha...

Hello Sandy! I read the comments and didn’t realize Rich wasn’t feeling well either. Thank you so much for the tips on cutting paper. I have the Cricut trimmer and I purchased a Tonic guillotine trimmer that was the size of the fiskars that you used. Unfortunately, it had 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch squares molded on the base but no ruler measurements. It was so frustrating, that I sold it at a garage sale we had. I would like to get the Tim Holtz Tonic guillotine paper cutter. I would like to find out how well it works for everyone. I imagine it works great. Thank you for extra helpful info for prescriptions. I’m diabetic and we got an amazing discount from the manufacturer so it is only $25.00 instead of $144.00! This is such an informative video,Sandy! Again, I think you are one of the most helpful RU-vidrs I have ever watched. Thank you so much for your tips, they are so so helpful. ~ katz

So glad you learned something from the video. I don't have the Tim Holtz trimmer, but have a friend who does, and she said it was kind of flimsy (her words), and she didn't feel like the quality was there....If you buy it at any of the big craft stores, they'll take it back, as I've had to return numerous trimmers because I couldn't use them...If you do buy it, I'd love to know your opinion of it. As for prescriptions, these are frustrating times...My deductible went to $5000, so until I reach that (which will be shortly), I pay out of pocket for my meds...almost $1000 a month.. I really wonder how most families can pay that much out of pocket for their medicines. I have a friend who can't afford her meds, so doesn't take them daily like prescribed, so she can make them last longer...that's just not right...I'm glad I can be of help in any way possible.. Rich's cold is gone and mine might be on it's last legs (hoping so..) My voice is still a little bit snotty sounding, but otherwise, I'm doing lots better....

I hear you, Sandy! I don’t know how families with anyone who has an illness or a chronic pain issues survive with the cost of medications! It’s a very sad state of affairs! I’m hoping that I can start back going to my folks house twice a week again soon. With their age and my Dad having COPD I can’t chance them getting this. So the Tim Holtz guillotine is a bit flimsy feeling? Well that might just change my thoughts on getting one. You know, it’s disheartening sometimes that things are made so cheaply and cost an arm and a leg anymore. I will have to think about that then. I have had problems with cutting my paper straight. It happens almost every time I cut a piece of cardstock and is so so frustrating for me. I have loved my Fiskars trimmers, but I use them so much that the measurements come right off the platform. I’ve purchased I don’t know how many of them. That is why I was thinking of the Tim Holtz. I guess I might just have to stick with my Cricut one! I wanted to be able to cut more than a couple of sheets at a time. Hope you continue to feel better, Sandy! All the best to you and your fur babies! ~ katz

Glad to help. I don't use my guillotine trimmers often, as I prefer the Cricut trimmer I showed in the video...If you go to this link, it gives you the same kind of information as the guillotine trimmer. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P7agQ0iTyCE.html..In the long run, I think you'll like the Cricut trimmer much better than the guillotine (unless you are using it to cut a stack of paper...and then I'd recommend the bigger guillotine trimmer.) Let me know if you have any further questions that might help you decide which one to buy....Sandy

Kelly, Don't worry, we've all been where you are. If you ever have a question, I'd be happy to answer it for you, so feel free to email me any time. saundralparker@yahoo.com. I've done a lot of beginner emails and am happy to share them with you. Here's one on products I recommend. I don't make any money from my videos or the products I recommend, and I always tell viewers to price shop, as the prices I found, might not be cheapest for you now. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p1x-Y3ctNzw.html If you're not sure what product you should buy, you can type it in my search bar, like wet glue, or tape runner, and I've probably made a comparison video for you to help you decide which works best. As for your paper trimmer, you might have a little issue with getting really accurate measurements if your trimmer is smaller like mine. The bira craft trimmer I found on Amazon, only measures to 6", so if yours is like that one, you'll struggle to make 5 x 7" cards with it. I think most crafts who start with a small paper trimmer (like I did too) upgrade to ones with a larger arm. If you live in the US, you might want to look at either a Fiskars 12" trimmer or for when you buy 12 x 12" paper and need to cut it. www.joann.com/fiskars-12in-paper-trimmer/8597122.html I recommend this one as it's normally in stock at Joann's (if you have a store nearby) and you can use your coupon on it. I really like the Cricut paper trimmer that you can also get at most Joanns stores www.joann.com/cricut-12in-portable-trimmer/14242085.html but you normally can't use a coupon on them, because they're by Cricut and the stores don't honor their coupons on even their cheap Cricut trimmers.. I think the Fiskars trimmer is heavier made, but originally, it came with a wire by the cutting line, and I kept having issues with mine...It looks like the wire's not there now, which for me, would be a plus. Fiskars has a great customer service department, so if you have an issue with whatever you buy from them, they normally will replace if. In case you bought your guillotine because you normally see online crafters use them, it's because they have another paper trimmer for cutting their card bases, and only use the one on videos for small cuts. I hope that helped....Sandy

@@craftingforalmosteveryone Thank you so much for all the advice, Sandy! I'm going to keep it in mind as I go along, believe me! 🙂 I got the 8.5" guillotine trimmer because I'm only making A2 cards for now. Why? Because I got a Stamps of Life die set that had the entire scored A2 card base in it 😅 I'll probably want to branch out in the future beyond trimming A2 sized things. There's so many beautiful cards and techniques out there!

Hi Sandy. Thanks for another great video comparison! They’re my favorite. I watched your other trimmer comparison some time ago and found it very useful. Ironically I recently purchased not 1 but 2 guillotine trimmers. The small one by paper studio (hobby lobby) looks identical to the WRMK trimmer, I think made by American Crafts? Anyway it’s similar in size to the fiskars one you were using, but slightly larger, as it accommodates 8 1/2 x 11 paper in either direction. And the best part is that it was $9.00, as paper studio was 50% off when I purchased it. So far I really like it, and use it mostly for photos, as I am a scrapbooker and have found that my fiskars slide trimmer (my go to) sometimes struggles with photo paper. The second one was a splurge. Tim Holtz 12” guillotine. I was able to use a 60% off coupon on Blitsy, and it came out to $27.00 with shipping. I’ve played with it a little. So far so good, but reserve judgement until I use it more. It does not seem flimsy to me, but you know everybody is entitled to their own opinion. That said, I haven’t used it enough to say if I like it, or if I think it’s worth the money. I’m pretty sure I’m only going to pull it out for 12 x 12 because it’s a little too large to keep out in my small space all the time. That said, I was wondering if you still use your Creative Memories guillotine? It was one of your favorites in the first video I think? Do you still like it? Thanks again. Looking forward to more!

I think you'll get a laugh out of this...I can't find my Creative Memories guillotine..I'm not sure if I decided I didn't use it enough and gave it to someone starting out in card making, or if it's somewhere in my crazy craft room. I did really like it originally, but I realize that I have certain trimmers that are more versatile (like the Cricut one), so I use the Cricut almost solely. The other thing that I like about the Cricut, is I can be much more accurate than with guillotines when making smaller cuts (in my opinion....) Hope I answered your question and I'm so happy you liked the comparison.Happy Memorial Day..Sandy

So sorry you and Rich haven't been feeling well. I hope now you both are doing better. Thank you for this great video and all your tips. I have two large guillotine trimmers I bought at garage sales and I use them some when I need to cut a few sheets of 12x12 paper. I have an older Creative Memories smaller guilliotine cutter and it's not cutting as straight as it used to or as clean. I also have the older 12 inch green Cricut cutter and it kind of mashes some paper and doesn't cut well. So needless to say I need a new paper trimmer.

This is a super helpful video. I have a smaller 5" wide guillotine trimmer and I was so excited when I bought it, but when I used it, I was really disappointed. I was hoping it would be the mini equivalent of the huge ones we had in school (LOL) but it just didn't work as well at all for me. I know some people love them, but I have to admit that I'd rather stick with the ol' slide and cut trimmers.
@craftingforalmosteveryone
@craftingforalmosteveryone 5 лет назад
I completely agree with you. I think the guillotine trimmers have specific jobs...Like using the larger ones to cut stacks of cardstock in half...but for small cuts, and trimming single pages, I prefer my Cricut...and it was less expensive than the Fiskars guillotine. I know a lot of people prefer guillotines, but there's a learning curve, and sometimes people don't think they'll ever use 12 x 12" paper in their trimmers, and once they realize they will, they don't have a trimmer to accommodate it. Glad you enjoyed the video...Sandy

Thank you Sandy for a very informative video. I've the little Fisker's guillotine cutter also. I love it. Please do the other video using the rulers and cricut cutter. Hope you and Rich and Honey are better soon. Thank you for the prescription tip too. When my husband was going through treatments. I went to pick up his meds. The pharmacist says that will be $6000.00. (One shot) when I finally could speak, I asked if our insurance had been used. It hadn't so the shot was only$600.00 (only) For any of us on meds passing along the tip you shared is extremely helpful.
@craftingforalmosteveryone
@craftingforalmosteveryone 5 лет назад
So glad you liked the video and I'll be sure to make the video on rulers, paper trimmers and score boards, as our measurements can be confusing. As for medicines, I'm sorry to hear about your husband's meds. I have fairly good insurance, but my deductible for medicine is $5000 each year, so it doesn't pay anything until I pay $5000....my meds are roughly $1000 a month, so I've almost reached my deductible...It's so tough for families with medicines like yours and mine that are expensive and to come up with that money every year is a bummer.... I just got my shingles shot and when they used my prescription card, it was almost $200 but when they used my medical (blue cross) card, it was free....I wonder how many people paid the $200 not knowing to have the pharmacy process it through their medical card....I knew to ask because Rich had called our insurance company to find out if it was covered and they said it was 100%....so when the pharmacist told me the co-pay, I had them check the other card...It stinks that we have to jump through so many hoops to get our medicines at reasonable prices... I hope your husband's health improves. Not sure if I mentioned in the video, but now Rich has shingles...and he was the one that was worried and wanted us both to get the shot...we couldn't find a pharmacy that had them in stock, until after he got shingles...isn't that the way it goes....So at least now I am protected...once his goes away, we'll get him the shot too....and he still has the cold. Mine lasted almost a month, and he's going on three weeks....and it's why we haven't put up any videos...he's too sick to do anything...

I swore I would never confuse people by saying A2 size as when I started making cards and YTers would mention A2, I had no idea what they were talking about. So let me first apologize for that. I had that problem with a Fiskar trimmer, it always left a rough edge, and I was told that meant I needed to change the blade. But I think I might have damaged my trimmer, because I use it on my lap sometimes, so that wire becomes an issue and gets in the way. (I think the wire is no longer taut).. If you haven't changed your blade, you might want to try that first. Guillotine trimmers don't have the same exacting measurements as regular trimmers, and sometimes you'll be off by 1/16" and that can be enough to ruin some projects. Just my 2 cents.. For perfect cuts, you might want to look into trimmers that are made with an arm like these. www.joann.com/fiskars-diy-procision-trimmer-tool/16310989.html They're self sharpening and no need to replace blades...I don't have the arm strength to use them, but they are really great to use (if you have the arm strength.) Hope that helped. Sandy

So glad you enjoyed it. I really use the Fiskars one a lot and it's handy for cutting triangles and thin lines, but not great for accuracy. If you want to make sure your cuts are absolutely 4 1/4" or 5 1/2", I recommend my Cricut paper trimmer from the other video...but I do like this one for cutting scrap paper and I'll be showing you it in use in a Christmas card video I'm currently making using scraps...Hope you'll check it out. I don't know when it will be live, as I have used most of my regular scraps and have probably 30 cards that I'm still finishing...once I finish them, I'm doing the same with Christmas card stock scraps.

Great tips Sandy. You're instructions are always so clear & precise . I did learn a few new things a even though i don't have a fiskars guillotine trimmer. I've messed up so much paper till I learned what I was doing wrong. I'm sure all the newbies will benefit even more. Hope you & Rich continue to improve & get your groove back. Happy first day of Spring. Mother nature is treating us to a thunderstorm today, which I love. I checked out the stencils. Great selection. Did you ever see a bird stencil anywhere that was similar to your sample? Also did you post the bunny pic somewhere else? I looked at Facebook, but didn't see it yesterday. Wasn't sure if you post pics someplace else other than yt. Just like to see a more detailed picture. No rush. Looks so gorgeous. So glad you told people about good Rx. I got a $300 medicine free one time after getting a coupon online from the pharmaceutical company. Never hurts to try. Hope med helps. Take care. Hugs from gg

I looked everywhere for a bird stencil that was open like the bunny. I couldn't find one...Rebecca and I really thought a bird would be best since we were replicating the picture, but the bunny was the only thing we found that was open ..Most stencils have a lot of detailed lines and you need to steer clear of those if you try what we did.. Honey's new medicine seems to give her diarrhea, so not going to continue it...not sure if the vet has more ideas...we've tried everything to help with her anxiety, but nothing's helped so far. She was on Prozac for several months and that did nothing.. The bunny pic should be on facebook....I'll email it to you so you can make it huge if you want... Glad I shared the Good RX info...My insurance has a $5000 deductible before it pays for my meds, but since they are so expensive, I usually hit the deductible by April or May.....it's terrible that we have such big deductibles now, and I think about people who are already struggling, and trying to pay for their medicines, it's sad. Rich is almost over the cold, but mine is still lingering...not much of an immune system, and I have been lucky...didn't get a cold all last winter, but this winter, not as lucky...drat...

I've never tried to take it off and I'd be afraid to break it if I did. Good luck with that...

If this is going to be the only paper trimmer you use, you might want to get a larger guillotine, like this one by Tim Holtz. www.joann.com/tim-holtz-12.25-maxi-guillotine/16144024.html The one I use in this video won't cut 12" paper and will only cut the 8 1/2" side of 8 1/2" x 11" paper and will only cut 12" x 12" paper if you fold it. I made this mistake myself when I bought my first paper trimmer, not thinking I would ever buy the 12 x 12" paper, and then when I did, I had to buy another paper trimmer. I recommend you use a coupon from Joann if you buy that trimmer, as it's really expensive. The trimmer I use most for day to day trimming is this one, www.joann.com/cricut-12in-portable-trimmer/14242085.html It does a nice job of trimming, but like most trimmers, requires blade changes...and that's a great reason to buy a guillotine...you never have to change the blade. I hope I didn't confuse you, and if you need any additional advice, please email me, saundralparker@yahoo.com, as I'm more than happy to help. I've tried a lot of paper trimmers and have discarded a few along the way, so I know the ins and outs of paper trimming. One last note...You can't trim anything thick with a guillotine trimmer (like cardboard) as the blade seems to move the cardboard and it's hard to get a straight cut. I do use my Cricut portable trimmer (I gave the link to you above) and it cuts cardboard, but I normally need to change the blade after I cut a lot of cardboard..Just making sure I cover as many variables as I can think of... What would you recommend if I need to cut 0.5inch papers?
@craftingforalmosteveryone
@craftingforalmosteveryone 3 года назад
If you need to cut 1/2" strips of paper, you can easily do so with a guillotine trimmer, by putting the paper on the 1/2" mark...If you need to do 1/2" round pieces, I'd use a paper punch or dies...
