This was an extremely helpful review. I've been through several of these trimmers. I kept my rotary blade, large format fiskars and the aluminum rail trimmer. Such an adventure!

Thanks for the review. Did you know that Fiskars replaces broken products or parts of their products? Call them about the trimmer that you dropped. They may send you a part or a whole trimmer.
I have the old one from Fiskars, not that with a metal bar. I'm not in the card making but I buy a lot of pdf sewing patterns and paper cutter helps me to cut off edges before gluing together. Just the problem is that my domestic shops are selling now the new model and I can't find spare blades for my old cutter. Actually as a biggest bonus for the old one is a alignment wire. I can align the wire directly where is the line which I need to cut off. For the new model the metal bar is on the way I you can't see anything through. For the old one sometimes blades can fall out, but it isn't bothering me, I have managed to cut so that the blade stays safe. I'll try to find spare blades for my old one.
Yes, finding blades is a common problem when you have an older model and they discontinue it. You may have luck finding blades from 3rd party seller, maybe ebay? If you do plan on getting a new trimmer you may want to look at rotary trimmers. I've heard they work great for patterns and fabric. They are on the pricey side, though. Hi there. Thanks for the comment. To answer your question, no not all the Fiskar trimmers have the same blade housing. The rotary blade trimmer and the trimmer with the aluminum guardrail have the blades attached so they don't come out while you use them. They tend to be on the higher priced range of the Fiskar trimmer. There may also be other models, but the two I've mentioned here definitely are attached. I recently found the fiskars with aluminum guard at Ross for $12. I love the wide base. But do you know where to get the blades or what there called? Thanks
Oh my gosh what a great deal. I know Michael's and Walmart used to carry them, but you can find them on Amazon as well. I believe it's the "I" size, but don't quote me on that. It's really a great trimmer. I've gotten the rotary one since then, but it's very similar.
Do you notice that your fiskars ones don’t have accurate measurements? I’ll trim a card base and score it and there’s almost always about 1/8” off. I thought maybe it was just the one I had so I purchased a different fiskars one and still have the same problem
Yes, I have noticed a little discrepancy and it happens most often when I am creating card bases, like you. In my everyday crafting however, I'm usually not really measuring anything but rather going by visual aesthetics. For example when I'm making a sentiment strip, my words are already on the paper and I'm just trimming away the overhang. I'm more concerned with the straightness of the cut and I don't really need the measurement. I also tend to use pencil markings to mark my cuts and that i usually do on my work surface away from the trimmer. I guess it all depends on what you need it for and how you are crafting. The small discrepancy hasn't stopped me from using the Firskar and I'd still say it is one of my favorite trimmers. If it bothers you that much, try scoring the paper using a scoring board instead. I don't think anyone will notice the small difference in your lovely and thoughtful handmade card. And if they do notice and say something, Well then they do not deserve a handmade piece of artwork from you. What trimmer or cutter do you recommend for long-term use for sublimination paper? I am no good at cutting in a straight line with a scissors or rotary cutter. I also used a trimmer and its still fairly new and it just rips the paper while trying to cut the paper.
Hi there. Thanks for watching and your question. which trimmers have your had? I've had most of my trimmers for a few months is not longer. As I mentioned in the video, my problems unusually came from not finding replacement parts too easily. Otherwise I switched because of preference or comfort of use. I really enjoy using the Fiskar ones. They are reasonable in price, often on sale, and you can get coupons for the craft stores that carry them. I find that their product is really solid and replacement blades are easy to get. I still use my Fiskars mostly, but do switch to the Tim Holtz one from time to time for quick strip cutting. Now as for the style, this is more preference and really project centered - in other words what are you using it for? larger projects that require you to make big cuts or small ones? Paper unfortunately dulls blades and rather quickly so if the paper is tearing, it most likely is due to the blade. There could also be a fault with the trimmer itself. It hard for me to say. Which style trimmer do you think is best for cutting a sheet of duplicate wallet photographs? I’m not sure if the slide trimmer allows you to easily see where the blade will line up with with the guide rail at the end of the cut. Your thoughts?
Such a great question. In my experience, I have used a guillotine trimmer to cut sheets of photo while working as an editor of year books. I found it to be pretty accurate. With a slide trimmer, I'd definitely look for a self sharpening one. This will help in preventing snags due to dull blades. As for lining things up, I tend to use the ruler and measurements to get the best results rather than just the blade rail on slider trimmer. There are also trimmers (although these are pricey) with laser guides to show where they are going to cut. So, I think that both types would work and there are models out there that will make the job easier, but it depends on the budget. Hope this helps.
I have the trimmer with the aluminum arm and mine is broken in the same place. It came that way. I use it every day also but I need to replace the blades and can’t find them anywhere because I have no idea what blade it uses. I think I’m going to have to buy a whole new trimmer just because I can’t find blades :(
Replacement parts can be a real pain to replace, but I noticed that many companies are creating universal designs with the same blade systems in newer models of trimmers. A quick tip, when you do get your new trimmer before throwing out the packaging with all the information, put a sticker label on the bottom of your trimmer with the blade model number on it or write in Sharpie directly on the trimmer that way you'll always know what blade to get. I hope you found it helpful. So it could be me, but I've never had much luck with trimmers when cutting more than a few pieces of paper at a time, unless it was one of those scary industrial trimmer I had in school when I taught. Copy paper and light weight paper usually work, but anything thicker gets snagged in the Fiskars or the blade isn't thick enough to handle that many pieces. I'd say 5 is really the limit. As for the Tim Hultz, I find smaller guillotine trimmers sometimes lack the momentum to cut thicker bundles of paper. They don't have the space to really get a good swing for gravity to help. Now, I can't speak for how the larger model would work, but I imagine it would capable of handling more paper at a time. Happy trimmer hunting.
Hi there. Thanks for the question. My answer is based on my own usage, so please keep that in mind. That trimmer definitely cuts 110 lbs cardstock, I use that for my card bases. As for cardboard, I think it all depends on the type and thickness of the cardboard. It may have trouble with the cardboard that has the wavy core (moving boxes and such) because of the thick fluffy consistency of the material but it should cut through cardboard like cereal box packaging with a sharp blade, one, maybe two if its not dense, at a time. I'd have replacement blades on hand since those types of paper dull blades quickly. Hope that helps
Oh no! I'm sorry. I guess that's just the life of a crafter. I've never really found the "perfect" supply, weather it's trimmer or other, however I find that sometimes combining two types of products brings me closer to "perfect".
