Hey! Glad this video has helped you out, if you still have some guitar-related questions you'd like answered check out www.craftyguitarclub.com - see you there 🤓
First one that actually made sense! Thanks for playing the same brief thing for comparison instead of showing off with lengthy different examples that are hard to compare.
Young musicians are so fortunate to have RU-vid. Back in the 80s when I was learning to play everything was learned by trial and error. You had no idea what controls did, what effects pedals sounded like, or how amps would perform…you just bought something random and messed around with it. If you couldn’t figure it out you would sell it 😂
I knew from the start that RU-vid wasn't gonna be very helpful for me, so I went with the old-school method of trial & error. The result was my dream sound.
I'll admit it, I'm just a software engineer, and I'm helping out a friend with a Noise Box project (with a piezo pickup) and *I* hadn't a clue of the difference between vibrato and tremolo. So, YES, some people (like me) do need to hear this. Makes perfect sense now! Thanks!
Great job! This video is so informative and helpful with lots of demonstrations and no self serving narrative taking up a lot of time as some others do. Thank you!
Listen Bro, a sincere thank you 🙏🏻 as you explained to me exactly what I wanted to know and was too nervous to sound stupid to ask and I bought on line from Fender a Mustang GTX 100w Amp and a all black Lefty Squire Stratocaster HSS without ever holding a guitar before. Got the gear, you got the info and I’m getting to work learning at 60 😆
My daughter got interested in guitar. Long story short, she heard "Ride on Shooting Star" and now she wants to play electric guitar. She was given an old Mako TB1. I found an old Magnatone 412 in my uncle's garage, no idea why he had an amp. Anyway, the amp powers up, but needs some TLC before I let her plug in and use it. I'm glad I found this video. Everything I know about amps, I just learned here, lol.
Great video , like how you explained the use of the amp controls ,both on the analoge and digital facillities , i hardly use my digital Fender chapion 40, and prefer to use my 15 watt marshall without any affects except spring reverb ,it helps me to learn to find settings myself, your video is very well explained ,thanks for the know how
It helped much more than you can imagine, Mr. Crafty (;-) )! Excellent primer, so thank you very much! Your other videos (that I've seen) are equally informative and helpful! Great stuff!
Every time I search to learn something a guy shows up with a video less than 15 minutes and makes me understand the concept till my grave. You're a great teacher bro 😊.
Holy smokes, thank yous mate, I’m gettin a electric guitar for Christmas and I had no clue bout amps feel like I’m ready to get started now that I have an idea of what stuff mean! Thank you so much !
Wow. This is the video I've been searching for. Thank you so much. I basically transcribed every word you said onto paper. LOL I feel I really understand so much more about amps, speakers, guitars, settings. THANK YOU!!!!
I bought my first electric guitar very recently and was given a beginner amp. It has less options than the amp you are using, but also several different jacks, so I was completely in the dark. I also had no idea it needed a speaker, and the specific knobs are not labelled, so your explanation has been really helpful for getting me started.
Thanks so much. I am an electronics tech and I am working on my friends amp. First time on a guitar amp. Had no idea how these controls change things. Thanks much as I can now have fun checking performance and controls. You are so easy to listen to and follow. Thanks again.
Different amps are radically different in the way the EQ knobs work, I've found. On Marshalls I always find myself turning the Treble to about 2, bass at about 4, sometimes less, mids at about halfway. Which is completely counter-intuitive. You really have to use your ears and never mind how odd the EQ settings might end up being visually. Lots of amps are like that where you pretty much get max treble/bass pretty low on the knob and any more you add just adds icepick and/or fart.
Thanks for the introduction to amps. I started withma small Pro Amp back in th 90s with plug ins for hi and low frequincy gain. I bought Peavy amp in the early 200s that I do not use because I could not understand how to use it. Now I have a PodGo effects board with too many amps and speakers. Great name by the way.
Excellent video, just have one issue, you refer to the guitar pickups as picking up the acoustic sound of the guitar. They don't, they convert the string vibrations in a magnetic field to an electrical signal. Unless of course you're unfortunate enough to have microphonic pickups which are a pain
Would being in Britain vs Being in Australia affect you at all on your settings of the amp? Ie. Equator line difference? And how about the medallion your wearing anything there? Very interested in this topic, also your choice in Guitars was top notch!!
I wish I had this video 20 years ago. My only resource back then was the smug dickheads at guitar center and you'd usually get more attitude than information.
One of the basics I didn't hear was a cabinet has to always be connected to an amp head without a headphone output. Sometimes even with one; Read the manual. If they don't, they'll fry the amp.
I know it’s too late But I have a question My amp don’t have bass and treble but it haves high and low I don’t know how to use it can you help me. Thanks❤
🚩Videi was SO Close to helping..need More! Which shocks me. .love electronics! But Noodeling a Amp makes bme crazy. Own Boss Katana MKI..And Have NO Clue!! Im completely Lost, how to set it. Reverb,Delay,Booster. 2 Volumes. Thanks👍Guees ill check ur other videos...I "Get U".. lol!
Primo! Upgraded from Marshall Park 10 Watts practice (/busking?) amp with boost, gain but just treble, ‘contour’ and bass plus volume. Now have my dream amp - Vox AC15 with Celerion speakers. But feel overwhelmed and intimidated by so many settings controls. And got several electric guitars. So I’ve get months of exploring to enjoy. Best video on amps for tyros. Anyone who can squeeze so much clear information into 15 minutes I’m gonna hit Subscribe and Notifications on.
Got a question for you. One of my favorite guitar tones, "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who, has what kind of frequency? Townshend used a Gretsch 6120 plugged into a Fender Bandmaster amp. My guess is the tone is low midrange, maybe dead center midrange. The tone is warm, robust, and a bit growly. It kinda sounds like a rhino to me.
Thanks for this intro to amps! I am still pretty new and just purchased my first amp, this vid is super informative and funny too. Watch me learn to annoy the kids! :) Great job!
Thank you so much. I just got my guitar yesterday and I was so confused as to why there was no sound coming out of my amp when I strummed the strings. All I has to do was turn the gain up!
I'm sorry for asking the obvious but i got mmy guitar today but can't make heads or tails out of this. I tuned my guitar with the electric tuner and i've set the setting the on the AMP on the right levels but have a totally different sound compared to the badass sound you produce. I am doing something wrong?
Depends on what you consider “right”, every amp/speaker is different and settings to achieve getting a sound you like will differ from amp to amp. As I say in the video: experiment! Turn all of the knobs wayyy up and down to discover what each one is capable of, and make sure that the volume and tone knobs on your guitar itself are turned all the way up on full, otherwise the amp won’t have the chance to be given enough signal to work with 🎸
I've always played acoustic.. but I found this seminar very informative! I recently got some great used kit. I bought a '96 Marshall 8080 Valvestate Amp and a 2003 Fender Strat in matt plum/cherry (maroon) with black pickups and setup with Ernie Ball 10s.
Tips/pitfalls I learned the hard way back in the day: Speaker cables and instrument cables are different, even though they look the same. So if you're connecting an amp head to a cabinet, make sure you actually purchase a speaker cable to connect the two. It is designed to carry the load from the amp to the cabinet. An instrument cable is used to plug the guitar into the amp head. Second, if you get a really cool sound out of your amp in your bedroom and you go to play with buddies and you're sound just disappears or is not very crisp/clear once everyone is playing, try turning your Mids up. Don't make the mistake of turning the volume up. A guitar is a midrange instrument. "Scooping the mids" can sound really cool when you're playing by yourself, but in a live situation it can sound like a hissy-muddy mess and you can't distinguish notes anymore.
This is the best video I’ve seen on this subject. I just started playing guitar again and I’ve been wondering about amps and stuff and I feel like an expert after watching this video. Thank you
