By adding a counter-poise to a Magnetic Mount Antenna, you can use it with your BASE Station. The steel plate, is used to hold the antenna as well. Being portable, it becomes a desk antenna. It is neat to save money and reuse your tools in other venues.

added -- sometime you need to tune the antenna with a small cap depending on the base surface as well.

Just tried this with no success.

I tried using this for a cb base antenna.

The antenna needs to be a CB mag mount,. Since the frequency is much lower the UHF/VHF, the radial needs to be much longer to resonate. At CB frequencies of choice, us a quarter wave section or wire base. The wider the radial, the broader the tuning range. 11 meters / 4 will be some where near it.

@@richardpenstein I’m using a Stryker SR-A10 MAGNETIC MOUNT. What formula do I use to determine the correct radial size?

I see two problems. For the antenna to work and tune, the base has to form a capacitor to tune the antenna to the proper frequency. Look up ham stick, they need a cap to tune the vertical to the proper HF frequency. This is why they depend on the steel surface of the car to be a part of the tuning. When you don't have a large surface as a standalone as I described, at your frequency this is needed. At the uhf freq. , the small base can be used, but not for CB. In addition at lower frequency, the ground radial needed is very long, about 8 feet. So, a tuning cap will probably be needed and a radial . 11 meters divided by 4 is a quarter wave, that will get you close. A plate like a garbage can cover, but larger will probably be needed to be used. That is why a truck surface being long works. As the frequency being used rises, the surface length and size is reduced. My setup works for hand helds in the 2meter and above with out much fuss. -- best 73
